knee and lower back pain while running

...was using basketball shoes...

Nope. Use basketball shoes for basketball running shoes for running. The Asics.com page has good info on choosing their running shoes.

I also get knee irritation after I took up deep squats after years of no knee problems from cycling. And, I don't have an ACL in my right knee from a 1984 injury when I was 24.

so what did you do about your knee problems and deep squats? Do you still do them?

Sounds like shin splints. Do a google search for shin splints and see if you have the same symptoms.

Thanks G8r8, i just looked it up on wikipedia ;)

Ill just carry on running and see if it gets better/worse which will determine what action i should take!

Surprisingly to every physician I have seen since 1984, I don't have knee problems from most activities. I am going through some knee tenderness right now because of the squats and will watch it for a while longer. I think the squats cause tenderness because of the widerange of motion under stress which I don't get from other activities (running, cycling, etc.). If I continue to have tenderness, I will stop doing deep squats.

This works for me

I'm not a runner either myself, but I used to have similar problems while cycling. I'm using a supplement called MeridiumXN with great results. I put several dropper fulls in my water bottle and hydrate while I ride. It's got an amazing anti-inflammatory property and it tends to boost my energy too. If you care to try it for yourself you can get a free 30 day supply at
