My Diet

Hey guys! I am new here. I am 14 years old, 5'11'', 160 pounds, and am in the ninth grade. I am not strong and am pretty fat (not obese or anything but I do have man "boobs"). I want to lose weight and gain muscle. So, I came up with this diet and I was wondering if you guys can help me with it and maybe help modify it if you find anything wrong. Well, here it is:

Breakfast (7:00am): 1 cup decaf Coffee with 1% milk and sugar.

SCHOOL - no lunch period.

Lunch: I am Indian so I eat fried vegetables (shak), thin tortillas (rotis), 1 small container of strawberry fat-free yogurt, and 1 cup of Cereal. OR, I might eat 1 bowl of white rice (basmati) with mung beans (high protein green ones). Now, I am only 14 so my mom makes me eat Indian food at least once a day :p So, I can't change this meal.

Exercise: Weights: 30 minutes endurance training (practically no breaks)

Dinner: 1 cup Cereal with 1/2 1% milk. Or I might eat some fruit (apples preferably.)

So, what do you guys think? Please leave feedback and feel free to modify my diet in any way (except the Indian meal I have for lunch).

Do you know approximately how many calories you're getting in a day? you might want to try a site like to record your calories (but keep in mind that the site is for 18 and up :D

This is where i put on my forum mother hat -I'm not a mother in real life, I only mother people on the internet - At your age your body is still growing and changing and you need to make sure that you are getting proper nutrition so yuo can grow big and strong and stuff like that... :D don't skimp on calories...

additional thought... you're not starting your day with anything nutritious - you wouldn't start a car and expect it o run without fuel - you need fuel in your body - especially to get you thru school...

If you're pressed for time - grab something to go - you can take baggies of cereal and eat them out of the bag... or fruit - even a tortillas with peanut butter and a banana or an apple.. there's a bunch of threads that have breakfast to go selections.. but do try to eat breakfast - coffee isn't a good thing for a growing boy for breakfast.. :)

I'd add in breakfast -
I'd also add in some snacks during the day to keep you going
Dinner seems a little light to me

It might be a regional thing - what time is your lunch eaten? is that the evening meal and dinner is a later snack?

your current calories I think are too low for your age, and size - you could lose weight with it -but i'm not sure it's the healtiest way to go about dooing it...

I eat breakfast at 7:00 am. Then I go to school at 7:30 to 2:00 pm - I do not have a lunch period. After I come home, I eat lunch at 2:15 pm and and then at about 2:45, I do my exercise. At about 7:00 pm, I have my dinner (cereal/milk). What snacks should I add? How should I modify my diet?

what do youo have for breakfast? A cup of coffee is not breakfast :D

Snacks could be anything from an apple, a banana, a portion of nuts like almonds, a portion of cheese with whole grain crackers.

Okay how about this diet?

Breakfast (7:00am): 1 cup Cereal with 1/4 1% milk.

Snack: some fruit (apples, ect)

Dinner: 1 cup Cereal with 1/2 1% milk.

I'm standing by my statement that it doesn't look like you're getting enough calories - and especially protein in your diet...

How many calories are n the cereal that you're having 2x a day?

how big a porton of the indian food are you having for lunch?

Hmm - let's see.

The cereal I eat is usually Honey Bunches of Oat or Honey Nut Cheerios or something of that sort. Now, 3/4 of a cup has about 130 calories. I eat 1 cup. So, let's just say I am putting in about 200 calories (including the 1% milk).

Breakfast: 200 calories.

Now, with the Indian meal, the vegetables I eat have potatoes in them. So, let's just say the vegetables have about 500 calories. Now, there is also vegetable oil used to fry the vegetables along with all of the spices. So, let's just say the vegetables together are about 800 calories. Then there are the rotis - let's say 200 calories. Cereal again - 180 calories. Yogurt = 90 calories.

Lunch = 1180 calories.

Snack: 100 calories (apple)

Dinner: 200 calories (cereal with 1% milk)

So, all together, I am probably getting 1680 calories today. Does this make sense?

While you calories for the day may be low, you dont seem to be getting in enough nutrients from things like vegetables, fruits, and proteins. Cereal for breakfast is fine, but for dinner you could try different things like chicken and veggies, or even a sandwich and a piece of fruit. Since you are only 14, your body is going to change a lot. For a man at your height, 160lbs is not heavy at all. So what you should be focusing on is weight training to retain your muscle while you diet and then once you lose some excess fat increase your calories and continue weight training (high amounts of weight with low reps). You should go to Steve's diary to learn more about this. He could probably help you a lot.

^^^ Thanks for your information guys. But, if someone could write out a diet for me (including my lunch meal), I would REALLY appreciate it! :)

This is kind of hard to do because you dont want to eat the same thing everyday. If you try to eat the same thing everyday, chances are you will give up on your diet. The important thing is to count calories and work out. Doing those 2 things will make you lose weight, there is no magic menu we can give you that will help you lose weight.

Does your school have a nutrition specialist or counselor / dietician you could see?

I am a mom of a fourteen year old girl, and I'd be worried if she was eating that little each day.

Here is a link to a very good site about nutrition:

Dieting

Hey guys! I am new here. I am a boy - 14 years old, 5'11'', and 160 pounds. I am pretty fat and have less than average mass/muscle for a kid my age/height/weight.

So, my question is this - with the following diet/exercise, will I be able to lose weight/gain a little muscle?

Breakfast (7:00 am):

1 cup of Honey Nut Cheerios (whole grain)
1/2 cup of 1% milk
1 glass of water
-----------------------------------------------------------------

SCHOOL:

1/2 liter of water in a bottle
no lunch period
gym (PE) every other day
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Lunch (2:00pm):

1 cup of fried vegetables
2-3 tortillas (we call them rotis)
1 cup of whole grain cereal
1 small container of fat-free strawberry-banana yogurt
2-3 glasses of water

OR

1 bowl of rice with mung beans
1 cup of whole grain cereal
2-3 glasses of water
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Workout (2:45pm):

I do bicep and tricep exercises with a 10 pound dumbell for 30 minutes (like I said, I am below avereage in strength)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Snack (4:30pm):

1 apple/orange/peach (whatever)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Dinner (7:30pm):

1 cup of Honey Nut Cheerios (whole grain)
1% cup of 1% milk
1 glass of water
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Sleep (11:30pm OR 9:00pm OR 10:00pm)

I keep a 1/2 liter bottle of water next to me at bedside (I get thirsty at night)

Now, I know this isn't the perfect diet but any suggestions would help!

I think that you need to work on your nutrition plan. You have a lot of foods that are high in carbohydrates and not enough protein.

You need to eat more chicken, turkey, steak---something with protein in it. Protein helps build muscle, muscle helps burn fat.

Try to have most of your carbs in the morning, this way you have the rest of the day to burn them off. I do like your breakfast plan. At lunch add some veggies and fruit and some protein. Dinner should be pretty much the same as lunch. For snacks, try for a piece of fruit or a protein shake.

maybe you can throw in some running/walking or similar exercises a few times a week. your need to revise your diet though, there's lots of free websites to help out - i dont know em but im sure someone will link you some..
