I need to concentrate and need energy... what should I take?

I'm a college student and I need to spend MANY hours studying but I find that after a short period of time I just fall asleep. I workout every other day and eat right. Energy drinks are too much money, I'm hoping there is a supplement out there that will help me concentrate and give me more energy for the possible "all nighter" of studying. I don't get a lot of sleep to begin with either. I am not making this thread to get answers like, get more sleep, etc etc, because in college thats simply not going to happen. I'm looking for suggestions on a supplement in pill form. Anyone know of anything or tried any? I know of vitamin b12 but I was wondering of any good complex's out there too...?

Caffiene Pills work well and are very cheap. Although you do gain a tolerance to caffeine.

The only other products i've tried and had success with were Pre Workout energy boosters like NO-Xplode or NO Shotgun.

These are likely too expensive as well though.

You might look into Biotest's Spike like I've been. T-Nation advertises the hell out of it...

Personally I find it more effective to study and go to sleep with atleast 3-5 hours under your belt, and have an energy drink (or in this case pop some magic pills) prior to your test.

It did wonders for my last Physics exam.

I did my stint in college. Didn't have those issues.
Sleep IS an option in college. My guess is you don't sleep enough and your diet sucks. Probably lots of simple carbs causing blood sugar spikes and dropouts which'll knock you out faster than 2 benadryl and a shot of vodka.

agree with malkore, im gonna suspect its your diet. in college its easy to hitup the frozen pizzas and crappy cafeteria food. you need to make sure you are getting decent amount of lean protein and stay away from high GI carbs.

when you eat carbs, make sure they are in the form of vegetable. fruit is ok, but try to not make this your main source of carbs. lots of fruits, especially bananas have a very high GI. if you have to have bread or pasta, make sure its whole grain. stay away from sugars as best as you can.

i know you were looking for a "take this magic pill" answer, but if your problem lies in your diet, no pill is going to fix that.

I like to call it 'crapateria' food. the dining halls at UNL weren't terrible, but they cared more about catering to vegan/vegetarian than being 'healthy'.

My deit does not suck. I don't know about your school but the food is actually good and they serve healthy food. My school also has 7 different dining halls. I get all the vegies, fruit, protein, carbs, in one day as I should. If you knew me then you would know, I am a health freak so it is really silly of you to question that I have a bad deit. End of that story. I said in the first post that this is NOT a problem. Now back to the energy pills... Which ones should I try out? Brands, what percents, any suggestions?

Well if you want a straight up answer.. caffeine, and thats all there is to it. If I really needa stay up on on redbull all night, but since your on a tight budget, very understandable.. Grab any source of caffeine. The pill form I've heard and see it to be addictive... some was a cronic addiction.. but if thats what your willing to do.. because you are left with no choice.. I had to back in highschool for finals week. Nowadays I don't needa worry bout that.. I naturally just don't sleep. Give or take couple hours. Caffeine pills can be found everywhere.. shiet go to the nearest gas station for some.

then buy a coffee maker or an espresso machine for your dorm room. caffine will give the most 'boost' with the least amount of side effects.

Apparently health freaks can't read...

There are other people in this thread other than you. Perhaps I was asking for more than one suggestion.

Nevermind anyway. I thought I made it clear that my deit does not suck, and I do not get a lot of sleep. I only get 2-4 hours of sleep a night... you people do not know why so you have no reason to assume that it IS an option. Maybe I have a very loud roommate and my room is next to a very loud big screen tv and there is a train going by every hour. damn I could go on forever. But it doesn't matter because this thread is way off topic.

the only kinds of answer I was looking for. "Try ____ it worked ___ for me. You can get it at ____." In the time I put into this thread I could have done my own research, but I still like to know experence's of other people. Too bad we have ppl like mr. Lei here who have to create drama.

Make sure you know how to spell diet before taking those exams, let alone some pills :)

it's called a typo... I was typing these really fast, plus i was half asleep, so you dont have to worry about my tests, my gpa is a 4.0 and im trying to keep it that way.

Anyway, why are energy drinks a bad idea?

there is a train going by every hour.

I do have this but sleep alright. Is it your roommate? Before I spent some money to stay awake I would put a foot in his... I tried Spike, but didnt think it made any considerable differences. However it sounds like you want to use these almost everyday, which shouldnt be done. Your body is gonna need its sleep, one way or another.

I will be the person who suggests a pill, I suppose. BUT I am NOT a pharmacist and I do NOT know if it really works or not. I have been taking it for a week now, it seems to help but am not sure yet. I asked a pharmacist at a local health food store what pills to take to help me study and she said to take these:Vinpocetine and Power Thought. She said she used them when she was studying in college and it helped her. She said to take them together as a combo because of how it effects the body. She said "Power Thought" used to be by itself, but the makers took "vinpocetine" out of it, so this is the reason you have to add it.

I only plan on taking these when I am doing some hardcore studying, so not everyday...

^^^ oh and thanks for the suggestion, I will look into it :)

Hot Rox works

Take mega men vitamins (2/day in morning) and Hot Rox (3/ morning). You will be attentive and energy filled. Someone on here suggested it, I tried it and it has been the only thing that has had a significant amount of boost ever since epehedrine fell from grace. Ah, there was nothing like Ripped Fuel or Hydroxycut w/ epehdrine to keep us alert and awake all night while we attacked North into Baghdad. Everyone was on it, and it worked. Ephedrine should have definitely been the sponsor for Operation Iraqi Freedom #1 when we first went in. Hot Rox is good stuff though, and doesn't give a huge energy drop in the PM like ephedrine did. (Hopefully not as dangerous either.) The mega men vitamins help quite a bit, and keep your health up if you aren't getting a balanced diet like many college-goers.
