Hi, Im just new to this so bare with me...

I started the Cohen's diet a few months ago was going really good until I started to feel really tired and run down. I went to the doctors and found out I have an under active thyroid, so stop the diet. I lost 5 kg but have put it all back on. I really want to start the diet again but Im finding it really hard to stick, what can I do?

Can someone help me stick to my diet?

You will need to get Dr Cohens clearance before re-commencing any diet- or have you spoken to the clinic.

Be careful not to start again without checking first -

I have spoken to the clinic, I have kept in touch with them since I started but still having heaps of trouble starting again. Can you help me?

Hi Manda:)

Why are you having trouble. I presume you have your plan and have read it etc.

Are you having a particular problem with a certain time of the day......what I mean is are you starting the day alright then fade by the afternoon or are you not in that zone of really wanting to lose weight yet.

When i started I was 100% in the zone and couldn't wait to start and after the first 2 weeks saw and felt such a reemarkable weightloss.

So let us know exactly what the problem is and then we can help you with it.

Manda, No one can really help you with this diet. When you are ready you will be able to do it. This is one of the strictist diets I have ever done and you need to put your social life on hold while on the diet to make it work. It will not work for you if you do it part-time. You work so hard on this diet and then if you deviate you can lose a whole week by 1 deviation. I am not trying to be harsh just truthful. :) Just think about the end result and hopefully that will be enough to get you started. The first week of the diet is the hardest and if you can get through that you can make it. While your body is getting all the sugar, bad carbs etc. out of its system you feel like you have been run over by a truck but beleive me it gets better and at 4 weeks when you get on the scale for the first time all your hard work will pay off. I put off my starting time up to 3 weeks and sure wish now I would have started earlier. Just remember it is for your health and for your family to have you around a long time. It is not forever and there is life after Cohen's and you will be able to indulge within some limits and still keep the weight off. Good luck to you!!!

Hi there,

I know from experience it is really hard to get on the wagon again once you fall off...well that's what I did, you were pulled off.

It is important to remember why you joined the diet in the first place.

For me I set myself a goal. I said that I would do the program for 99 days. This would A - give me 3 months to change my bad habits, B show me the results be it good or bad and C make a dramatic change to my life and health.

For me in the 99 days that I joined I had lost 30kg, my habits changed, my health improved dramatically and I felt 100%. My problem was that friends, family and work colleagues where impressed with such a huge weight loss in such a short period and they all voiced their concerns that I had lost enough, that I'd end up old, tired and hagged looking if I continued. I myself was not sure or convinced that I should stop. I struggled with this being amazed at how I had changed, I could buy clothes off the rack now, it was just too exciting.

Then over the 30 days I was off the program became disgusted in myself, diappointed, let down because I know what to do.. follow MY special program to suceed. I now decided that I am going to continue till I get to goal.

What I'm trying to say to you is that you and only you can work out what got you motivated in the first place to spend the money to make a change to your life. If you can catch a glimpse of this then you will have the spark needed to get your fire going to get you to your dream weight. You have the tools you just have to be dedicated, devoted and loyal. In return you will reach your goal in record time and will look back and think gee how quick did that time go by?

I wish you luck.

I think my whole problem is having kids around and a husband that doesn't need to loose any weight. I start the day off great, and by the time it come to lunch or just after Im feeling so tired and really dont have any energy, I find it hard to make myself different meals then everyone else. My family are very fussy eaters. I dont have a big group of friends where I am cause we have just moved 800kms from home. I guess that makes it hard for me too.

Any suggestions.

I fit exactly into your category. We moved interstate, 1300km from home. I don't have any friends, I have a job where I work with all males who I couldn't exactly call friends. They are all skinny with no weight problems at all and eat whatever they want - often. I have 2 kids that are fussy, 10 and 5 and I have a hubby who does not need to / want to lose weight and is fussy to top it off.

I give them the same as what I eat but with extras such as pasta, potato, bread and of course they may have different meats etc. I try to make the meals as similar as possible. And I've told them that this diet is about me wanting to get healthy which not only benefits me but them too. I need them to support me by eating what I eat and going without. It's not going to be forever but the whole thing is that they like to eat crap. I get my hubby to take them out once a week for their junk food treat and they now eat more fruit, veg and in general are getting healthy too.

Its hard when they don't want to support you but you have to draw the line somewhere and look out for you. I'm sure that while you are unhappy it's an inconvenience that you are willing to bear with because you bought the program in the first place. If you didn't think that you would be able to put into play in your life you would not have bought it?

You have to make the changes for you and be responsible for your actions. Them not being supportive, wanting deviations and being fussy are excuses to set you back. You need to commit 100% to the diet for it to work. Think of it this way the quicker you get on it the quicker it is finished and the better you shall be?

As for being tired I was so tired for the first 2 weeks, it was hard but suddenly it was as if I had been given a new lease on life and guess what I'm hardly ever tired now. I get to bed about 12am and am up at 6:30am, previously I was going to bed at 11 and getting up at 7:30 and that wasn't enough sleep. I was napping when I got home from work in the afternoon. It was idiotic!

In a blink of an eye you will be where you want to be.... dare to dream :)

You can do it. You know you can.. you just need to start, once started it is easy... :)

Hi Manda:)
It sounds like you still have your thyroid problems if you are feeling tired. Have you checked with your Doctor about starting a weight loss programme.

In my house I quiet often make different meals for hubby and the kids I did this tonight and of course for myself while doing Cohen's.
Don't use your family as an excuse - is their another reason why you are not able to stay on programme?

With Cohen's you really do need to plan maybe you can organise your meals in advance and freeze them or have all your salad/veg ingredient washed and waiting for you to weigh up. With the meat I weigh and freeze and take what I need out the night before and leave in the fridge to defrost.

Cohen's really is about planning. Is your clinic offering any advice? Are you doing it over the internet or do you have a clinic near to you.

Would really like to help you get on your way I think once that happen's you will be fine.

take care
Sam:)

Hi Manda

Me again :D just was thinking about you and was wondering if you are on any medication for the thyroid or if you have had an operation or something else to help fix it.

If your taking medication is it possible a side effect is tiredness? Have a look at the information leaflet or search the web and see what other people are saying about the medication. If it is causing you problems then maybe there is an alternative brand or something available.

Sorry to go on but it was just a thought.

Keep going... it onlly gets easier....

Hi guys, thanks heaps for the advice.

I am taking medication for the thyroid problem, it is an under active thyroid, which makes me feels tired, down, lack of energy, hair loss, weight gain and much more... the medication is helping with all of that but running after three young children under 5 does it to me.

I have started my diet again! I am going to stick to it! I want to lose the weigh because I am not happy with myself. Thankyou all for your help and advice I think I need someone to talk so that is going through the same things. Will let you all know how I go!

I have two kids under 5. Not quite the same, but similar. I have to admit that before Cohen's I was doing WW and although I have lost on it twice before this time I wasn't. Why? Because I was using my family as an excuse. Unlike your situation, my hubby tends to cook his own meals and those of the kids. He has always made the meals and that is partly to blame for my lack of success on WW. It doesn't seem to matter how much I try to educate him, he really doesn't understand that little bits of fat and sugar can actually make a big difference to someone my height. Anyways, now I just follow Cohen's. I actually find it easier because it's really really clear. You can eat this this and this and not any of that. I've had to do things like spit out the bite of half eaten sandwich that I had just tucked in my mouth (from the kids lunch), but it's been worth it. I'm down 5kg in two and a half weeks. I'm also being more conscious of what the kids are eating. I don't want to set them up for being overweight too - and right now I think I have. Do you remember your mother making you sit at the table until you finished your veg? or maybe serving you your dinner for breakfast because you didn't eat it? maybe those weren't such harsh lessons.
One of the things I do find about the diet and the kids is that it's hard to keep up all the time. I periodically feel a little light headed because I've run around the park with them and done a little too much. I try and save my fruit for those times, and I split it into halfs - so I have 4 halfs to divy up during the day. IT's usually just enough to bring everything back in line. The biggest thing on this diet (as others have said) is PLANNING. I hate it. I hate tedium. I hate weighing everything. BUT I LOVE HOW MUCH WEIGHT I'M LOSING and that's what I focus on. Good luck with everything.

I can relate

Hi Manda:)

I can relate to your circumstances in away my youngest has just turned 5 but any other diet I have endeavoured upon when my kids were little failed miserably.

I have only two so i can't even imagine waht you are going through with 3 under 5's and also it sounds like you are pretty isolated.

Stick with us here at the forum and we will help as best we can to keep you motivated. When my youngest had just tuned 1 I started a weightloss programmed through a naturopath similiar to atkin's and it was very restrictive and i failed miserably and gained all the weight back that I did lose plus more.

I also agree with Sashabear68 - Cohen's works well for me because you do have to follow a plan and their is no guess work involved. I like that it tells you exactly what to eat and when to eat etc.

MANDA THE COHEN'S PLAN IT IS THE BEST DIET I HAVE EVER BEEN ON AND LIKE MOST OF US HERE WE HAVE BEEN ON A FEW. I TRIED THE WEIGHTS AND EXERCISE,THE HIGH FIBRES,THE LOW CARB'S,HI CARB'S THE POTIONS AND SHAKES, I EVEN TRIED A DIET THAT TOLD YOU TO CONSUME OLIVE OIL THAT WAS HOW DESPERATE I WAS TO LOSE.

So all I can say is thanks goodness for Cohen's. I have made this my last weightloss journey and I know now as I enter my 40's that I will be strong, healthy and weight free and my children will see their mother staying around for their children.

Sorry to go on about this but I am trying to help and hopefully this post will do that.

Take care of "you" Manda.

It sounds so familar

Hi Manda,
Yes three children under the age of 5 is challenging, I have three boys 7,6 and 5 it can be, to put it politely madness at times. I am the primary care giver for our children and I find in times of conflict that food has comforted me. Not any longer. My husband is supportive of me, he has never suffered any weight issues but still understands how this is very important to me.

Manda, it is important for you to understands as a mother and a wife we have a lot of demands on us, but importantly there comes a time when you need to give yourself some attention. This is not a selfish act but something that is essential to sustain and ensure a healthy life. I am commencing Cohen's starting on Monday. So with that in mind maybe I should not be so full of wisdom.

Anyway, as you travel along your journey I hope to cross paths again. I know how it can be a struggle with anything in life that demands we rise to a challenge, it is however truly rewarding to rise and not fall. I wish you all the best in reaching for your goals.:D

Cheers

Amanda,

I'm sorry to hear that you have been medicated for your thyroid condition. I can only imagine how exhausted you must feel with 3 kids under 5, this condition and a weight loss program that seems to add fuel to the fire.

I had PCOS, Adenomyosis, Insulin Resistence and was on my way to being full blown diabetic. The constant pain that I suffered with the Adenmoyosis was chronic, I've been battling with it for the last 11 years. One of the side effects of all three of these was weight gain along with excessive exhaustion. This diet has corrected these. I have minimal pain, matter of fact once only since I started this program at the end of August. I no longer need a hysterectomy to fix it too. Something that absolutley blew away my gyno, not to mention that at 33 I don't want to part with my uterus it astounded me.

When I signed up I truly doubted that I was going to be a success. I doubted that I could do it. I mean have you ever heard of someone going on weight watchers and putting on weight? Thats me. But this program has been the best, greatest, most successful thing I have done for my health, wellbeing and my family. I just can't tell you enough how once you get going with it there will be no turning back.

What I can tell you is that the tiredness, the part caused by the direct result of this diet, does go away. It goes as fast as it comes. You just wake up one morning and can feel that you feel revived. The good news is that you will have more energy for your kids and who knows with any luck the thyroid may fix itself? I'm not sure if this happens but hope that it does for you.

Keep on trying you just might suprise yourself and wake up one day feeling fab!

Good luck Amanda :)

Hi Manda

Hi Manda:)

Haven't heard from you for awhile.

Is everything alright?

Are you still doing Cohen's?

Sorry for all the question I am just concerned.

Hi SashaBear68, if you head back to page 1 or 2 of the Cohen's thread there is a post with instructions on how to do it. Basically though you need to go to a website like tickerfactory.com or choosing2lose.com and create a tracker (just follow their instructions). Then copy the code in the BB Code box. Come back here and go to User CP (in the blue strip at the top of the page) and click Edit Signature. Paste the code into your signature box and save. Then your tracker should appear in all your posts. When you change it it will update all of your posts.

Cheers,
Linda

Hi Manda

I too am a mum of three 8yo, 6yo and 12month old I find it difficult too, but you need to realise that the value you place on yourself will have a dramatic effect on your family, and the way you are able to cope. Just like they always say if you don't look after yourself first then how are you supposed to look after them? Value yourself highly and you will find the strength to do it. Maybe you need to be a little selfish at this time and try to put yourself first. As mothers we don't do this enough. Also with the tired thing are you taking your vitamins as it can also be a sure sign of an iron deficiency. If you are having trouble with sugary foods then try chromium it works wonders.
I too have an underactive thyroid but you can overcome it and you can move on and regain a healthy and normal life. Just get up and move on when you look back in 10 years time you will have realised that the time you spend now on the cohens program will only seem like a blink of the eye.
