Weight-Loss I HATE fish.

Weight-Loss
Another thing that can help is to note that some parts of the same fish taste fishier than others. I find that the more purple parts of salmon tend to taste worse to me - if you're just easing yourself in to fish eating you can try some fish but be aware of color and texture changes and instead of letting a bad bite turn you off, see if you can identify differences in texture/color that would differentiate so you can try to get only the tasty parts.

Hah! There's your problem. Where are you getting those purple salmon?:smilielol5:

Fish is...healthy? I know that I need the nutrients, so I'm trying to see if anyone has gotten around the icky taste, or if I need to just take supplements.

First of all, you don't need those nutrients. This whole "fish oil" thing, for example, is just a huge trend. You don't have to eat fish in your diet in order to live a healthy, fulfilled life, so I don't know why you feel as if you do.

Secondly, if you are concerned about the nutrients, but don't like the taste of fish, then just take a supplement.

If you want to be able to sit down and enjoy a meal of fish with your family though, without having to make something different for yourself, then you're just going to have to suck it up and deal with eating fish. Sure, there are certain dishes that don't taste as "fishy" as others, but everybody has different taste buds, so it's going to be nearly impossible for someone to give you an accurate recommendation for something you would definitely like.

But, just to give it a whirl, here are some personal recommendations that you might like (ones that aren't too "fishy")...

- Fish Tacos
- Broiled Rainbow Trout w/Lemon, Lime and Tarragon
- Bouillabaisse (fish stew)
- Grilled Sockeye (salmon)
- Fish & Chips
- McDonald's Filet-O-Fish Sandwich (I honestly believe that this is the BEST 'transition food' to get people who don't like fish to start liking it)

If you want recipes for that stuff, I would recommend going to and browsing through the recipes on there.

Normally next to the skin :p

For example, you can see the darker flesh near the tip on the right.

That's just discoloration from the blood. Eww, I know.

I have decided to change my position on this. You need to eat anchovies. They are perhaps the most delicious, saltiest, oiliest (is that a word?) awesome, fantastic little fish ever put into a can. If you can't like them you are truly missing out on everything that is great about fish. (okay, maybe not, but I am eating them and they are scrumptious. On a side note, I think I may have just eaten all my sodium for the month...)

Hi!

I know you said you don't eat tuna, so take this or leave it, but tuna steak has a completely different texture from your typical whitefish. It's much meatier and one of my favorites. I have a friend that thought she disliked most seafood but loved this. We grill it with a blacked fish rub and it's divine.

If you are really wanting to find something that you can enjoy with your family, try going to a local fish market. The people there should be knowledgable enough to suggest a few things to you to start with that wouldn't have tht typicaly "fishy" taste. As long as you get a good cut of fish, that is properly cleaned and fresh, and season it in a way you like, you're bound to find something you enjoy. There are so many different kinds of fish and different ways to cook and flavor it, it would be nearly impossible to find you don't like ANY of it.

Good luck hon!

Well there are many benefits when eating fish, try to like it and benefits from it...

The health benefits of fish oil include its ability to aid in treatment of heart diseases, high cholesterol, depression, anxiety, AHDH, low immunity, cancer, diabetes, inflammation, arthritis, IBD, AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, eye disorders, macular degeneration and ulcers. It is helps in weight loss, pregnancy, fertility and skin care (particular for disorders such as psoriasis, acne).

Most of the these health benefits of fish oil can be attributed to the presence of Omega 3 essential fatty acids such as Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Other useful essential fatty acids include Alpha-linolenic acid or ALA and Gamma-linolenic acid or GLA.

The various types of fish which can be a good source of fish oil are mackerel, rainbow trout, lake trout, halibut, herring, sea bass, sardines, swordfish, oysters, albacore tuna, blue fin tuna, yellow fin tuna, turbot, pilchards, anchovies and salmon. The most common names among these for obtaining fish oil are albacore tuna, herring, mackerel, sardines, lake trout and salmon. The type of fish used and the purity standards followed in refining the oil govern the quality of fish oil.

The health benefits of fish oil include the following:

Heart Disease: According to the American Heart Association (AHA), clinical trials have proved that omega 3 is effective in reducing the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Fish oil, which is abundant in omega 3, therefore, reduces the risk of heart diseases and heart arrhythmias. It lowers the levels of LDL cholesterol, which is bad cholesterol, and increases the HDL levels, which is good cholesterol. Fish oil prevents accumulation of triglycerides and further reduces the levels of excess triglycerides. Preliminary research has also shown that fish oil can be used for preventing atherosclerosis in coronary patients. Thus fish oil is effective in treating heart strokes and regular usage of fish oil can help avoid numerous sudden cardiac deaths. According to the American Heart Association, these preliminary findings should be confirmed by detailed research.

Weight Loss: Fish oil also aids in weight loss process. Research conducted by Professor Peter Howe at the University of South Australia has shown that fish oil improves the efficacy of exercise in reducing weight. Volunteers who were given fish oil diet showed greater weight loss as compared to those who did not consume fish oil diet. Exercise combined with fish oil had a positive effect on the body shape and body composition of the patients.

Blood Circulation: It is believed that fish oil has the ability to improve blood circulation along with reducing triglyceride and serum cholesterol levels.

Immunity: It is believed that regular consumption of fish oil aids in increasing your immunity thereby enabling you to resist incidence of common diseases such as cold, cough and flu. Omega three fatty acids present in fish oil benefit the immune system by effecting cytokines and eicosanoids present in our body. Researchers have also studied the effect of fish meal and fish oil on the immune system of pigs and found that fish oil aided in the growth of the animals. Similar research conducted on mice at Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan, also gave positive results. Thus fish oil has the potential to enhance the immune system of humans. Fish oil is also beneficial to patients suffering from lupus, which is a disease characterized by the attacks of immune system of the body on various organs and tissues. Fish oil helps in reducing the pain and inflammation that may occur in joints, eyes, kidney, heart, blood vessels, lungs, nerves, etc. It also helps in reducing associated fever, skin rashes and fatigue.

AIDS: Research conducted by the Nutritional Sciences Program in Lexington has increased the promise of fish oil as a treatment of AIDS.

Inflammation: Fish oil has anti inflammatory properties; therefore, it is effective in reducing inflammation in blood and tissues. Regular consumption of fish oil supplements, tablets, pills and capsules is helpful to those suffering from chronic inflammatory diseases. Fish oil is effective in treating gastrointestinal disorders, sprue, short bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, which are typical disorders of the intestine. Patients suffering from Crohn’s disease find it difficult to absorb vitamins, fats and essential supplements. Fish oil supplements are an effective diet for such patients. In ulcerative colitis, fish oil prevents the accumulation of leukotriene on the colon. It should be noted that the anti inflammatory properties of fish oil are limited to reducing inflammation. Fish oil provides little effect in preventing inflammation. Research is also being conducted to enhance the anti-inflammatory action of fish oil by addition of other dietary supplements and drugs.

Arthritis: Fish oil is useful in treating arthritis, rheumatism, Raynaud’s symptoms and similar conditions. Usage of fish oil can help reducing the dosage of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). The Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia, and University of Newcastle, Australia have reported that large quantities of fish oil have shown positive effect on the treatment of arthritis. In case of osteoarthritis, fish oil can be helpful in reducing the impact of enzymes that destroy cartilages. However, since the dosage of fish oil required for desirable effect in the improvement of a patient is unknown, the Arthritis Center, Department of Rheumatology, John Hopkins University, considers including omega 3 fatty acids and fish oil in the treatment of arthritis as controversial. The University also cautions that there may appear certain side effect due to the use of fish oil in arthritis patients. Read more about arthritis on the webpage of Arthritis Foundation and Arthritis Center.

Depression and Anxiety: Due to the presence of Omega 3 fatty acids, fish oil is good for relieving depression, sadness, anxiety, restlessness, mental fatigue, stress, decreased sexual desire, suicidal tendencies and other nervous disorders. Researchers at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio in their research publication titled “Fish Oils and Bipolar Disorder: A Promising but Untested Treatment” state that fish oil can be useful in mood stabilizing and treating bipolar disorders. No wonder, it has been found that countries where fish is eaten often have low incidence of depression. Similarly research conducted on prisoners has shown that when prisoners were fed with sea food containing higher amount of omega three fatty acids, there was a significant drop in the homicide rate.

Edit: and really, ... pathetic...

Ok, since this is very precisely the field I spend most of my waking time reading about and working in, seeing things like this basically pisses me off.

First you list a veritable shitload of different diagnoses that have little, if anything, to do with each other besides "they sound sort'a like summa 'dum mind diseases bill!" Then you quote the TITLE of a study where the tile that you quotes underscores that this is "Promising but untested" which means, translated into layman-speak "there might be something here, it seems interesting, lets do more research". Then you go on to paraphrase the study claiming that it
states that fish oil can be useful in treating bipolar disorder.
and intermingles it with basically non-scientific claims about countries where they eat a lot of fish oil which shows that you have around zero understanding of the difference between correlation and causation. Its sort of like saying "humm.. in northern vietnam they have very little cardio disease, NO WONDER! because obviously living in what basically amounts to a dogmatic monotheistic (yes I went there) dictatorship makes your veins healthy!"

Now, this annoys me because eating fish is very healthy, fish has vitamin-D (some fat fish has it anyways) which is rare, fish has healthy fatty acids, a usually very good combination of proteins (tuna is, as far as I am aware, the gold standard for perfect protein combination) and if you stay away from only predatory fish, not THAT many heavy metals. Furthermore it is, for me and in accordance to my understanding of ethics, easier to come by ethically defensible fish-food than it is other animal food.

But you... you are just talking shit and basically claiming that "oh... fish will cure depression, fish will cure bipolar disorder" which is simply not true. There SEEMS to be an interesting correlation between fish oils and some groups of mental disorders, but that is all we know atm. And the amount of intellectual dishonesty you show is simply staggering.

Pomme never stated that it CURED anything. They only said that it's been helpful in treating. You can't cure bipolar disorder.

Calm down. Everything that Pomme put down was accurate. There's no reason to be aggressive and rude. Maybe you read their post wrong.

CP....this is a forum dedicated to learning and education of nutritional facts. Being abrasive and rude only causes harm. Most people on here are not educated and deserved to be treated with some degree of respect while you "disprove" their statements.

Please help people to learn and grow in a positive manner...not cursing and name calling.

You are of course right and I apologize, i get carried away sometimes. Also I love snark, but I'll rein it in.

Hi there,

I have used the Parmesan shake'n'bake used for pork on tilapia baked in to oven, it was very tasty and nice and crispy without adding a ton of calories.

Actually everything that Pomme put down was plagiarized from another site. He's just a wanna be spammer who copied and pasted a bunch of articles and pretended they were his own - so he could raise his post count, so he could get permission to link his spam site.

Information from a tainted source - take it for what it's worth.

tainted source is almost as bad as tainted fish! yikes!!

I'm not a huge Salmon fan.. somedays I like it, somedays I hate it. I want to find a way to cook it that I enjoy everytime. Tonight I'm going to bake it with some lemon juice, salt, pepper and minced garlic on top.

It's so good for you that there HAS to be a way for me to enjoy it more often!!

What about tofu cooked/seasoned like fish. To-fish?

If you don't like fish, you really don't have to eat it. There are a TON of other foods out there that deliver a wallop of protein and/or vital nutrients, many of which are vegetarian as well (like nuts, seeds, tofu, beans, seitan, tempeh, etc...)

Some of these might suit your palate better, with the added bonus of not contributing to animal cruelty. Even though they're not as cute and furry as other livestock animals, fish do suffer from being impaled, thrown, crushed, and/or mutilated while still alive in commercial fishing practices, and they are often left to die slowly and painfully of suffocation.

Fishing doesn't just negatively effect the fish themselves either. Thousands of dolphins, porpoises, and whales are killed in fishing nets worldwide every year. These animals are only second to human beings in intelligence over all other life on planet Earth (higher even than our closest primate relatives) and due to new research, scientists are calling for dolphins to be designated as the first "non-human persons".

PsyOrg - Scientists Say Dolphins Should Be Treated As Non-Human Persons:

National Geographic - Nets Kill Nearly 1,000 Marine Animals A Day:

Just some food for thought. Good luck! :)
