I got my mandatory army service postponed!

Short background:
In Norway, all able bodied men are required to go into the military, usually after high school when they are 18. You are then to be in the military for 1 year, then you can go home, do whatever you want, but you will still be called in for repetition exercises or if there is a war and the country needs to be defended until you're 40-something.

However, sometimes you don't get called in just over the summer, like with me, I got called in in March last year (the first time I got called in) I got that one postponed (you usually get it postponed if you have already started a higher level of education, since the military recognises how much it sucks to get pulled in in the middle of your studies), since I had started a 1 year course in English.

Anyways, I got the first one postponed, but then got called in again in January next year. I sent a letter asking to get it postponed again since I have already started a bachelor degree in sports and human movement science. It's postponed for 3 years, which means I have 3 years to get to the doc and get something more permanent.

Yes, to all of you patriots out there, I intend to get away from my mandatory army service. this is not because I don't love my country, or anything, but I have serious issues with the military in my country; I don't like how they operate.

You can be a patriot without serving in the military. I considered going into the marines, even visited 3 times with a recruiter during my senior year of HS. I respect our soldiers and appreciate what they do!

I just decided I'd rather go straight into college. I do my part to make this country work, and I think I'm a good citizen. I'm a patriot through and through, I love the U.S. and would kill for it.

Anyways, guess I got off on tangent. I don't think what you are doing is wrong, unless it's really frowned upon in your culture to get out of it? Even then, if you are content, that's the real deal.

naah, it's not really frowned upon. Most people realize that a lot of folks don't want a break in between school years, you could lose your drive and motivation.

There are tons of funny stories from before with people wanting out. It used to be hard to get out of it, it's not now. Back in the day a lot of guys had farms at an early age, they inherrited it from their dad or something. When you've got a farm to run, you don't have time for the military. The standard thing to do was to pretend to be a bed wetter, because you'd be sent home then. So this guy a friend of mine knew did that, he pissed in his own bunk in the army. Then the army, to test whether he was faking or not, told them they were gonna drug him so he would sleep through the night, if he wet his bed then, they knew it was for real (they had to tell him about it because of the law) so the dude got my friend to piss in his bed for him that night :D

There are loads of funny stories like this out there! It's so funny to hear previous generations tell.

I hate the idea of mandatory service and the draft for that matter. First of all I want people who WANT to be there in the service. Secondly, how can you say you're a free country on one hand and and force people into servitude with the other.

That's not a shot against your country in particular, there are many here who would like to see mandatory service here.

Hahaha that's hilarious, thanks for sharing.

Norwegian army? Just tell them you sustained a shoulder injury that prevents you from rowing or wielding a battle axe:D

Can you pick the branch of service when they do call you?

You can make a wish, lol :p

Last year of high school all guys have to go to this thing where they test your IQ, eye sight, hearing, etc, and you also talk to a guy with whom you can make a wish. I wished for medic as my first choise and tank driving for my second, but didn't get any of those when they called me in the first time, didn't get any of those now either :p Maybe because I just did average on the tests, I kinda didn't bother to do much on them.

And yeah, I don't like the idea of mandatory army service either, it's on of the reasons I don't like the military here.

So do women also have mandatory military service, or is it just the men?

I agree that mandatory military service is really not a great thing to do. Some people are made to be soldiers, some aren't. I wouldn't last 2 days in boot camp. I'd be lipping off the instructors and I'd end up scrubbing toilets with a toothbrush. I'd try to come up with the worst possible thing I could do, and then I'd keep doing it until they either thought I was completely insane or a threat to national security :D

I'd just want a dishonorable discharge ASAP.

Women don't have it. Which IMO is a bit weird and old fashioned.. I mean, if there's gonna be mandatory army service in this day and age, it should be mandatory for both sexes.

There's a lot of other weird things too. If you have sex with someone at the military camp, you get a fine, but you get a higher fine if you have sex with a woman than with a man.. wtf?

That's just not fair. If the men have to serve, the women should, too. Especially in a Scandanavian country. You guys are well-known for having much better rights for women than other countries :)

So let me get this straight -- you get fined for doing the horizontal boogie, but fined less if you do it with a guy? :D

They honestly don't think you can go one year at that age without any reciprocal sexual gratification, do they?

I think you get fined for masturbating, too :p

It's like the army is not bound by Norwegian law.. there are laws against discrimination.. I don't get why there hasn't been a huge case about this yet. I think all the unfairness is just to make people pissed off. it's part of the psychology and psyching down the soliders.

And turning them into mindless automotons that never question orders. As we all know, automotons make the best soldiers ;)

EDIT: I just realized that didn't sound very good. What I meant by automoton is a person who never questions orders.

We used to have mandatory army service here in Portugal. In my time I still was supposed to go. I was finishing my degree at university and already had a job waiting for me (a really good one), so 8 months of army or navy or whatever was going to mean loosing that opportunity.

The day I was called in was a day for university finalists like myself. You should see the tons of x-rays, laboratory analysis and medical charts every single person was lumbering around that day. We were probably the sickest people on the planet :D

They let me go because I had a letter from a psychiatrist saying I was a crazy mother****er that had to be on constant medical vigilance so they could adjust my medication. :costumed3:

It made no sense going to the army back then but boy! do I regret it now! Things are so bad in this God forsaken country that the Army is one of the best jobs available. And with my degree I would automatically be an officer too.

Then why don't you go now?

Good point, Karky. Perhaps it was "temporary insanity" or a "temporary biological cerebral dysfunction".

Yeah. That's it. Temporary condition ... ;)
