How many times should I drink protein per day?

Hey guys,

I recently got some protein (about 2kgs of Gold Standard Whey) and am wondering how many times per day I should drink it. It comes with a 70cc scoop, so I'm assuming I should used half a scoop per drink. So currently I'm planning to drink it 3 times on workout days and 2 times on non-workout days. I workout on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and the occasional weekend day.

SO on workout days my protein consumption would look like this:

Once in the morning
Once after workout
Once before bed

And on non-workout days:

Once in the morning
Once before bed

Is this right? Should I drink more or less?

Why did you decide to drink it 3 & 2?

Less IMO.....once, just after a workout, should be fine.

You should easily be able to get all the other protein you need from normal food sources, instead of supplements IMO.

btw - how much do you weigh ?

I know people say "try to get it from food sources" but really, its tough to beat 25g of pure protein, 0 carbs, 0 sugars, and plenty of added bcaa's at the same time. If you lift A LOT, you need A LOT of protein, around 2g per body weight pound.

Mornings: GOOD!
Post Workout: ALWAYS
Before Bed: I would eat some casein protein instead, since its slow absorption, but if you cant get your hands on that, sure, its fine to have whey instead.

Personally, I use it as a meal replacement, with some added fruit. If you are bulking, you need a lot of it. If you are cutting, you need even more.

Yes my friend recommended casein! But I'm too cheapo to get it. Does it actually help you?

By the way guys is there a difference between someone who works out and takes protein and someone who doesn't? What does the protein actually do for your body? If someone eats enough protein in their diet, does that mean they don't have to take protein.

Also you know your protein powder, when you mix it with your milk or whatever how long do you have to stir for? How many grams do you guys drink per day?

@tonymcclellan: Because I only workout alternate days so on the days I workout, I drink it 3 times and on the days I don't planning on twice only

@Wrangell: I'm about 183cm and I weigh about 76kgs. What is the optimum body weight to height ratio for a buff person?

Thanks everyone.

Really poor advice enz, you can easily get enough protein from your diet, which is actually prefered rather than supplements.

Yes you need more protein, but not a lot more, ESPECIALLY not 2g per pound thats just absurd.

Yes 2G per pound is very absurd. You should be bale to get enough protein out of your normal diet with a little help from your supplements.

Most important time is straight after workout, get it down you when your body can't take solid food, especially big slabs of meat or other protein rich food. I then try to have protein rich meal when I get in. I also take a smaller amount the morning after.

Whilst its no substitute for proper diet, I find it makes a huge difference to my recovery times.

Just to add is it pure whey you have or a mix? If its pure I would consider adding some quick acting carbs to the post workout shake to stop your body just using it as fuel and to create a insulin spike to help absorb it all.

Ideal amount: zero.

Try to get protein sources from food. Good protein food includes: tuna, chicken, eggs, lean steaks, milk, nuts, etc.

For post workout, drink milk. It helps a lot, and it's what whey protein is made from.

I agree protein shakes should probably be banned as people do not realise they are unnecessarily expensive supplements whereas high quality protein can be gotten from natural sources.

I have one protein shake a day, two at weekends as because of other commitments I may not get all the required meals in for that day.

Ideal time to have a protein shake is immediately after a workout, which is what I do.

Although some may agree that having 0 protein shakes in your diet is good, it must be appreciated that due to some peoples' lifestyles it is difficult to get a decent meal every three hours, hence having a protein shake, which is easy to make, quickly consumed and can fit around your lifestyle (work, study, etc).

my dr.put me on whey protein powder for weight lost and because i don't eat right .i am excerising 5 days a week.anybody else have input on this ?

1.2 grams per kilo not pound
i would always have a PWO protein shake
also try obtaining protein from whole foods and then use protein shakes to get the rest of the required protein

Hey Kaynno...digging up a post from 2 years ago??
