I must add that, although i do go to 24 hour fitness (a very comercialized gym) there is a surprising about of people that actually go in there to work. of course there are some social butterflies but they usually hang out in the cardio or machine areas. luckily we have 2 squat racks so if some guys are doing curls on one, there is still another one to use.

I could see where going to a gym and having to wait around for equipment because someone is sitting on it carry on a conversation would get old, luckily, I don't have issues like that at my gym.

home gym

I've never been a member of a regular gym. I never thought I would like it. I have everything I need at home. I have a treadmill, elliptical, stepper, stationary and recumbent bike in one room, and a bowflex and free weights in another. I've added it little by little over the years. I also have a tv, vcr and air conditioner in the cardio room, and a sterio and air conditioner in the weight room. I love this set up, I can workout anytime I want. I'm also very disciplined, so I always do.

I copied and pasted the below comment from my journal. This thread got me to thinking about what it is like to have your own "Training Clan"

The coolest thing about training for a sport, or training in general is the people you meet, the conversations you have. Camaraderie is the word I am looking for. A group of people who are like minded and fun to be around. That is really what makes training cool.

I see a lot of people who are all excited to get some stuff and start working out at home. But I think that they are missing out on the best part. Going to the gym and hanging out with cool people. Going to contests and hanging out with cool people. This is what training, competing, and working out are all about.

Couldn't agree more Georgen. Only problem is, I don't think there are any people like that in my gym :( I haven't seen anyone doing propper squats or deadlifts..

There are some in the town you live in I am sure. Every town has them. Doesn't matter where you live.

Finding the right people to train with increases results and the total experience of training.

Word. I couldn't have said it better myself. I know when I get to lift with the guys I throw with, it's just a much cooler experience.

and yet I would happily sacrifice whatever you guys think I'm missing out on for the 15 minutes I don't have to wait for each station on a busy evening at the gym.....:p

Deftly a regular gym.. I never feel in the mood to get pumped, until I step foot in the gym. The gym is my home away from home, I met most of my friends there, its a great social atmosphere, and you dont have to worry about cleaning up, putting things away, and repairs. When I do work out at home, I feel like a goof because Im isolating myself and am more liable to slacking off at home. I get distracted easily unless Im at the gym, and looking around, I get more motivated as I notice people bigger, stronger, and tougher than I. Plus, I do the gym a favor by just simply showing up.. for me being eye candy and all for all the ladies.

You're taking a class right? So are you just taking the class over and over? Texas past a law a few years ago that you cannot take the same class more than twice.. even if you withdrawl, it still counts as 1.

i think premier universities have gyms that all students can go to without taking a class or atleast the ones i went to (UCR, UCLA)
well as far as the poll, i definitely prefer home gyms because im not very social and very self conscious that i dont feel comfortable when i get the feeling someone is looking at me

I love going to the gym. I live in the city and walk everywhere so getting there is a little part of my warm-up. I like that there are is a lot of different equipment, plus the gym I go to has both an indoor and outdoor pool and I love to swim - that is in fact why I chose this gym, (which is technically called a 'health club'. And I take a Pilates class and at least think about doing other things.

The gym is associated with a local hospital and the focus is on the whole picture- working out plus nutrition. Other than in January when 'the resolvers' are everywhere, there is usually enough equipment to go around, and people are good at letting others work in with them.

I work with a trainer, partly becuase I am mostly clueless and partly for the discipline of having to be there at a certain time and the accountability it brings to everything. And the people at the gym have been a huge source of support to me - recognizing progress and even just saying 'have a good workout'. There is a mix of people-lots of 'just starting out' but after four years I am on the fringes of the hard-core lifting group which I totally love - that these super-pumped guys are sharing with me. It totally rocks my world when they comment on the weight I am lifting - when someone offers to remove plates for me and my trainer says-'No I'm adding for her' - there are only a few other women there who lift as heavy as I do, and they are all much younger, so that boosts my ego too.

I do have some dumb-bells at home for times when I just didn't get to the gym and I want to do something, but I find it mostly easier to just go to the gym. And, since I live in the city, space is kind of at a premium and I'd have to give up some other room like the bathroom or the kitchen, or turn my living room into a gym...where there are already weights under the bookcases...

So I vote for 'go to the gym'

Either works for me. But I'd rather go to a regular gym if I can. Though it's sometimes crowded, their power rack is alot safer than my ****ty 100 dollar gold's gym squat rack. I can also get a trainer to spot me anytime for bench or whatever. They also have plain more weights that I can use.
For some reason, it also seems easier to lift in a gym. Like I can lift more weight, not sure why.

Much prefer the my home gym. Can do it when I feel like it, doesn't me per month and don't have to wait on others to finish before I can lift.
