Sport Healthiest Cereal?

Sport Fitness
What is generally considered the healthiest cereal among you fitness guru's?

I'm bulking up right now and cereal (among other things) is a vital part of my morning breakfast. Just wondering which kind would be healthiest both for my general well being and for my fitness?

Any recommendations?

EDIT: My current cereal brand is 'Fibre 1'. It's apparently very healthy BUT I'm not sure if it's ideal for fitness/bulking.

Does it have to be cold?

If no, steel-cut or "scottish" oats, hands down. Chewy and derricious. Or pretty much any whole grain. Quinoa has "complete" protein (relatively speaking), and can be quite tasty with a pre-wash and the right broth. Also, amaranth. All of which are quite yummy with some berries and some almonds.

All of the above will dirtnap any cold cereal that ever was, is, or will be conceived by mortal men and women. :)

what about cold cereal? like raisin bran, or special K? are these good breakfasts?

Good is relative. I would say, "No, they are garbage!" Others might say, "Yes, they're a lot better than 15 cinnamon buns and 3 lbs of bacon."

In terms of nutritional quality, they are probably inferior to the choices previously listed. Overprocessed, even had they not been crap to begin with. Too many trash ingredients added, especially in the case of Raisin Bran, which is admittedly delicious. ;)

If you're strictly looking for cold cereal, then Kashi Go Lean is the best. By a mile.

As for me, I'll just stick with my oats. ;)

old fashioned oatmeal.

cold cereals are 'good' compared to a McDonald's breakfast combo...but actual 'good' cold cereals are few and far between.

plain shredded wheat, Fiber One has some new stuff out, or some of teh Kashi stuff....that's about it.

I used to have a good guideline for these. It gave you proportions for fiber to calories and sodium to calories...and if you didn't meet those ratios, the cereal was crap.

raisin bran did NOT fit those guidelines...most cereal won't. I'll see if I can get that info again...my wife is who provided me with the information.

Found it.

The sodium content in milligrams should be less than the total calories.

In other words 60mg of sodium in a serving that yields 100calories would be OK. 120mg of sodium in a 100calorie serving is BAD.

She doesn't remember the fiber part, but I'm almost positive it was something like 1 gram of fiber for every 70 calories...and that's the one that KILLS most cereals, even General Mills 'whole grain' stuff.

there are several new Fiber One brand cereals out there that taste good and are loaded with fiber. sodium is ok...adn the sugar isn't too bad cuz they use some sucralose to cut back on the sugar carbs.

Suggestions on various cereals:

1. Steel Cut Oats, Old Fashioned Cut Oats, and Regular Cut Oats (quick cook type), in large containers. The no added sugar varieties.

2. Various types of Go Lean Kashi cereals (with no refined white sugar)

3. Fiber-One. (60 calories per 1/2 Cup, and source of fiber)

4. Grape Nuts

GRAPE-NUTS:

Ingredients: WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT FLOUR, WHEAT FLOUR, MALTED BARLEY FLOUR, SALT, DRIED YEAST, SOY LECITHIN. VITAMINS AND MINERALS: REDUCED IRON, NIACINAMIDE, ZINC OXIDE (SOURCE OF ZINC), VITAMIN B6, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), THIAMIN MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1), FOLIC ACID, VITAMIN B12, VITAMIN D.

Its devoid of any "added in" sugars, and from what I have read on Lecithin, this is used in many bread products for various reasons, and isnt a bad ingredient.

5. Shredded Wheat and Shredded Wheat and Bran: (NOT SUGAR TOPPED)

POST SHREDDED WHEAT ORIGINAL SPOON SIZE

Ingredients: WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT

TO PRESERVE THE NATURAL WHEAT FLAVOR, BHT IS ADDED TO THE PACKAGING MATERIAL--If you dont like perservatives, dont select this one

Easy way to figure out if a cereal is healthy is to read the label:

Look for whole grains as the primary ingredients.
Check the sugar content. If it is more than about 5-10% of total carbohydrates, that may be higher than optimal (plain oatmeal, unfrosted shredded wheat, and a few others have no sugar added).

Unfortunately, most newer types of cereals, even those marketed to adults, are heavily sweetened, with perhaps 25-40% of carbohydrates from sugar (those marketed to children often have 50% of carbohydrates from sugar).

If your looking into a healthy cereal look for one called "Hi Lo Cereal"

My fav is eggs, milk, and some bread.

Then oats, honey, and milk.

If all else fails, then I go with cereal. I usually switch between raisin bran or whole wheat discs.

Only problem with cereals is watch out. I usually eat cereal over the weekends, but weekdays it's something else. The reason being is that the fiber content is so high, by 5pm, I'm getting ready to kaplode.

The only cold cereal I ever eat is the Kashi Go Lean Crunch. There are a couple of different types. The other Kashi ceareals are quite nasty.

my favorite is oatmeal
very good for you and dirt cheap
I used to get some Kashi for the mornings I dont have the time to make a bowl of oatmeal but quit since others in my house would eat it like popcorn

I also like how they specify between soluble and insoluble fiber
