H1N1 (Swine Flu)

Damn, I wish I lived in Norway!

And you're insisting on going into school? Haha, that's why you ended up smarter than me I guess, at your age I would have taken the time off and spent it in the pub playing pool

Lol, well, I'm just lucky to study something that truly interests me.

fevers suck, I haven't gotten one yet, and I don't think I will.. the worst is over for my part (not that it was bad or anything)

Just for your information, flu refers to the name influenza. You can say you have influenza or flu. You can also say you have swine flu or swine influenza, they both refer to the same thing.

However, they cannot tell that someone has a swine flu or not simply by looking at them. The only way to test is through a lab work.

However, I still don't understand what the scare is here. I'm not fully aware why people are so afraid of the swine flu. I mean all it is a mutated flu virus which can infect both humans and pigs. Nothing new, and they have pandemics each year (they call it flue season) and each year a certain strain of influenza infects people.

the problem is that there aren't a lot of people who are immune to it so if it spreads a lot of people will get sick.. if a lot of people are gone from work for a week, society has a problem.

No different than any other sickness...

This could be the most disturbing

The symptoms for swine flu are very similar to the seasonal flu, but they do have tests to differentiate which flu you have. The cdc website has a wealth of information about the signs, symptoms, testing, and treatment for h1n1. Their website will probably be your best bet for reliable information.

I think the problem with swine flu is that there aren't a lot of people who are immune, so if it spreads quickly a lot of people will be away from work at the same time, which really screws with the economy. And it will obviously be bad for people who are in the risk groups (I think the risk groups for swine flu are somewhat different than those from normal flus)

Compared to the usual flu, senior citizens appear to be less at risk, possibly due to flu strains from decades ago that may have been similar to the 2009 H1N1 "swine" flu. However, pregnant women are considered to be greatly at risk for this new flu variety. Other risk groups are similar, such as infants and people with conditions that make getting any flu dangerous.

As usual, school children are common vectors of flu and other contagious diseases, and their parents get exposed when the children bring the diseases home. Young adults (perhaps in college or university or other school) also seem to be common vectors. Medical and emergency workers are also commonly exposed to contagious diseases.

Note that H1N1 does not uniquely identify this "swine" flu virus, as there are numerous other H1N1 strains of flu, including common seasonal flus, that do not cross immunize each other.

I'm shocked of the ignorance on both sides of this issue. The flu is one of the most successful airborn virus that exist. It can constantly morph itself into new strains. Thats why is is so contagious and why it is so successful at killing people each year. Even the people who think they are protected by the flu vaccine are kidding themselves cause they are so many strains of the flu.

The Hypochondriac side...Calm down. The swine flu is rarely fatal and if you have it, stay in doors like any other flu. Pretty simple right.

The people who think they are more important to the rest of the world... sure keep going to the gym or work or school...thanks for sharing

My school had 2 cases in the last week of May last year, the sick kids came to school anyway...it was a disaster! by the second week in June, the school was shut down cause over 1/3 of the total population was sick. The State law says students arent allowed in school for one week if they test positive for N1H1 or for 24 hours after they are without a fever without medication.

How did you prevent getting sick?

There have been almost 600 deaths in the US already. Dosen't seem like hype to me. The media can lie, numbers don't. There have been several cases of it on my college campus and that is just a little too close to home.

oooo, 600 deaths.

did you know that 36,000 people die in the US every year from the regular flu?

Seems like the swine flu isn't as bad as the regular flu. Hence the 'media fear mongering tactics' that are scaring people more than they should.

I know of people who have had it.. they said it was nothing more than a regular flu to them. I'm not in any of the risk groups for this disease, so if I get it, it will probably just be like a regular flu. So I'm not that concerned about my health. What sucks is if I get it and I have to be home from school for like a week or more.. that's the worst part (for me)

Me it kind of freak me out..i don't know maybe because i have allergies problem and i am not sure if this would bring me into the categori of risk groups! My bf is not getting vaccinated, my son is 17 and he does not want it either my daughter 23 she won't get it and me 41 well i not sure sometime i said ok.. and other time nope ...:confused::confused: they will offer the vaccine this Monday.. o boy!!!

I don't buy it! Here's why: the news. The news love to create fear factor. The fact is, the swine flu is rarely fatal and if you have it, just stay in doors like any other flu.

You protect your family by first determining if someone is infected. If they are, you beat them with a ball bat. No just kidding about that part. What you do is you just make sure they stay home, drink plenty of fluid, and rest and wait. If it gets so bad, go to the hospital. The h1n1 is just a flu, nothing more. It's like common cold infects billions of people each year, and swine flu is just like that minus the fact that it's not infecting billions, just a small percentage of the population.

Hi how are you?
I read that the problem with this flu was that not like the regular flu who attach the virus in the upper layer of your lungs this one get deeper in the tissue this is why its so hard to get rid of it... maybe i read too much!
Well anyway i started to take Vitamin D3 and Vitamin C and probiotic.. i also want to start taking Cod liver oil to try to boost my immune system but my problem is that i actually have at least 30 lbs to loose and i have a hard time to stop eating the sweet stuff... its like an addiction...:cheeky2: but i also read that people overweight are more likely to getting then other people.. i am not obese but i do have some weight to loose...hard to figure out how to start... grrrr

more people die monthly with normal flu than have with swine flu since this outbreak started

thats hype.

I take care of myself! If i start to feel like i may be getting sick, i rest a little more, i make sure i put on my jacket, it take hot showers, ect.

Being around people who are sick will not make you sick! You will get sick if your body isnt prepared to fight off the virus or bacteria. People are surrounded by virus and bacteria every day, we are not sick every day. When you run yourself down enough, you will eventually get sick.
