H1N1 (Swine Flu)

Over the past few weeks, experts have begun to search for ways to overcome the weaknesses in the response to the outbreak of H1N1. These weaknesses include poor communication, coping with new strains of the flu, understanding the symptoms, and proper treatment. The CDC has discovered that rapid tests used by hospitals to determine if a patient has the H1N1 are proving to fail over half the time in detecting H1N1. They have since begun to research rapid tests with higher sensitivity. With an outbreak expected this fall and vaccines not expected to be available until late October, what are you doing to protect you and your family?

I don't buy it! Here's why: the news. The news love to create fear factor. The fact is, the swine flu is rarely fatal and if you have it, just stay in doors like any other flu.

You protect your family by first determining if someone is infected. If they are, you beat them with a ball bat. No just kidding about that part. What you do is you just make sure they stay home, drink plenty of fluid, and rest and wait. If it gets so bad, go to the hospital. The h1n1 is just a flu, nothing more. It's like common cold infects billions of people each year, and swine flu is just like that minus the fact that it's not infecting billions, just a small percentage of the population.

I believe as the above poster stated, the news is blowing things up. They don't tell you how many people die each year of other strains of flu

WIth that said, my family and I are doing the normal things we do to prevent any disease. We wash our hands several times a day, we cover our mouth when we cough and things like that.

There have been almost 600 deaths in the US already. Dosen't seem like hype to me. The media can lie, numbers don't. There have been several cases of it on my college campus and that is just a little too close to home.

I know of people who have had it.. they said it was nothing more than a regular flu to them. I'm not in any of the risk groups for this disease, so if I get it, it will probably just be like a regular flu. So I'm not that concerned about my health. What sucks is if I get it and I have to be home from school for like a week or more.. that's the worst part (for me)

I think the problem with swine flu is that there aren't a lot of people who are immune, so if it spreads quickly a lot of people will be away from work at the same time, which really screws with the economy. And it will obviously be bad for people who are in the risk groups (I think the risk groups for swine flu are somewhat different than those from normal flus)

Did you know that per year, flu causes 67,729 deaths? And did you know that in America, flu causes an estimated 20,000 to 40,000 deaths per year and approximately 100,000 cases of hospitalization per year? This accounts for .1% of people who die. So if you get a flu, your chances of being killed is just a small .1%.

Mexico and many 3rd world countries have very high mortality rate because of lack of medical facilities as well as lack of sanitation.

I understand that, but I'm not really worried about dying, I'm concerned about getting the swine flu. Who wants to be sick? My college, and surrounding colleges have been hit hard and I wanted to know what others were doing to protect themselves.

I wouldn't be any more worried about catching swine flu over any other flu. If you are worried, I would try to stay you are worried about getting sick with the flu, not just the strain of swine flu. Just my $0.02 :)

to dallen - TY for posting those numbers. People don't realize how small of a percentage this really is.

Swine flu is less severe than regular flu so why do anything special to avoid catching it. A friend of my daughters caught it and was fine after a few days, just sat at home watching DVD's with some sweets and hot drinks and she's only 5! If a 5 year old can shrug it off like that then what's the big deal?

Unless it mutates of course :D

I guess what I'm trying to point out is that swine flu isn't going to cause you to be any different than getting any other flu. Flu is rarely fatal, and everyone gets it. Heck, there are people who probably have swine flu and don't know it.

So I wouldn't really stress it. If you feel ill, just stay indoors. And as always, just be sure to wash your hands before eating, and don't put your hands in your mouth, nose, or eyes. The people who are most prone to fatalities or hospitalizations are children and elderly. So if you know children who has flu, be sure to keep them hydrated all the time as diarrhea can cause dehydration quickly.

If you visit the doctors office, they have a mask and sanitizer you can use. I know doctors in my local area has it.

However, to be honest, you posted this weeks apart. With that said, between the time when you first posted, and now, did you get any flu virus? No, so just take that as a sign that swine flu isn't all that big as people make it to be.

Holy crap! 600 deaths? Damn, there were about 3M people affected if I remember correctly. So that equals .02% of infected people.

Stop watching CNN.

Actually, if you did have the flu I'm sure you would know it. Every time I have had the flu I have had a fever, runny nose, fatigue, etc.

Those were also very good tips about preventing the flu, however those prone to hospitalization and death is actually pregnant women and those with repertory problems.

In the weeks between my posts several students at my school as well as my coworkers have gotten swine flu. Luckily, I have taken steps to protect myself from getting sick.

The H1N1 virus in the US (and probably elsewhere) has (fortunately) turned out to be a lot less severe than originally thought. Apparently, the vast majority of folks have some inherent immunity that doesn't prevent the symptoms of flu, but makes the damage manageable, not unlike that of the regular flu.

My general practitioner and pharmacist independently told me that everyone who around in 1977 during that year's swine flu outbreaks either had or developed antibodies to this year's version. That is why the emphasis on vaccines is for pregnant women and people less than 25, an age group that is usually the most immune to diseases and less emphasis on the elderly.

My daughter had H1N1 a couple of weeks ago (she had the flu anyways and we think it was H1N1) - no big deal. Missed 3 days of school.

I have a cold/flu right now and feel pretty awful.

Unfortunately one of the symptoms of this strain is that I just don't give a **** and will not skip school or any of that nonsense.

And they know it was swine flu because? Since there is no way of differentiating the two or testing for swine.

Really? They can test for it over here. The problem is that by the time the test comes back people have recovered so there isn't much point.

A client of mine told me this morning that he has swine flu so is working from home. Can't be that bad if he's still managing to work

I think I got a cold right now.. could be a mild flu, though.. I'm not staying home, lol. If they want me to stay home for 7 days (which is recommended in Norway if you get sick) they better ****ing test me.. I'm not gonna miss that much school for something that is most likely a cold, lol.

Damn, I wish I lived in Norway!

And you're insisting on going into school? Haha, that's why you ended up smarter than me I guess, at your age I would have taken the time off and spent it in the pub playing pool

I'm the exact same karks. I have been sick since Saturday night and wokr up last night with a fever.

I'm just getting over it today, as today is the one day I felt better waking up rather than worse.

Thing is, school just started and I'll be damned if the classes I worked hard for are going to drop me/I'm going to fail the classes because I missed lab or whatever.
