gain weight just by looking at food?!

The article you posted is stupid in my opinion and I don't believe that, however, if you're interested, I did read a book by Robert Ornstein and Richard Thompson called, The Amazing Brain, that sort of supports the article... in it they have an example of excuses people use for being overweight -- looking at food-gaining weight being one of them. In the book, they said it may be true from recent evidence (the book was written in the 80's) but said that the part of the brain that is regulating weight is just set higher in some people. Suggesting, some are just born to be fat. Another book, I can't think of the name now or if it was even credible (I'll look it up later), said that a doctor said the aforementioned claim by a hormone that slows metabolism.

I don't necessarily believe it (haven't really researched it either). But hey, stranger things happen. I'd say do your own research and formulate your own opinion.

Oh, really? You can gain weight just by LOOKING at food? Well, in that case, enjoy the weight gain, b*tches...

MMMMWUAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!! :reddevil:

...

Ok, but seriously? This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my entire life.

So... on a slightly more serious note... I think it's entirely possible for people to have an insulin response to looking at food. But... so what?

It's like the whole 'slow cardio for fat burning' - what about the rest of your day when you're not having this? So... you get an insulin response, you may even transform some glucose into a few grams of fat... and then... wait for it... as your body needs energy, and as you're lower in glucose thanks to it being turned into fat... your body burns fat!

Oh well, I suppose I should be well past the media totally skewing a study to make it seem more exciting.

Here's another mind blowing tidbit! Alcohol stops fat burning!! That's right, as long as alcohol is in your system, you will not burn fat!! EVIL BOOZE! ... Except that once the alcohol is out of your system, your body goes on a fat burning purge and you end up burning as much fat as... well, as you'd expect given the amount of calories ingested vs. spent.

Acute responses don't tell the whole story, figuring out the whole story is what good science is about.

I looked a little further, and it might be in reference to article...

I don't know much about insulin, but to me it seems like they did this study on healthy individuals who had greater insulin sensitivity...I dunno! I would read for yourself and take what you will. I think the article that was originally posted is twisting the conclusions a bit. I don't know if increased insulin increases weight gain or not....but I HIGHLY doubt that if the sight of food does increase insulin, it's enough to make you gain weight!

Hope that helps!

PS: I know we can't posts links- but it's to science direct with the full original article- and I don't believe they have any advertising! I apologize in advance for breaking the rule...*runs away*

PPS: I really want cheesy poutine now Chef....perhaps the link is : see the food = eat the food = gain the weight ... maybe they just left out the middle step!

Here's the abstract:
Abstract. Obesity is a major factor for the development of diabetes mellitus type 2 and the number of
obese subjects increases especially in industrial countries. Insulin is a central nervous inhibitor of
appetite and the peripheral insulin resistance is pathogenetic for diabetes mellitus type 2. We measured
the cortical activity of humans after stimulation with pictures showing food or non-food related objects
using whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) and investigated whether this activity is
influenced by insulin. The MEG measurements were performed in 15 healthy humans during a
hyperinsulinaemic-euglycaemic clamp in a placebo-controlled single-blind cross-over design. Every
subject underwent 2 MEG recordings consisting of 3 blocks each (baseline, 1st level insulin/placebo
infusion, 2nd level insulin/placebo infusion). The food stimuli elicited greater neuronal activity for the
first component of the visual evoked response if compared to the control pictures ( p=0.050). There
was a tendency of insulin to attenuate the difference between the neuronal activity for the food and the
control pictures. These results suggest that there is a differential processing of food stimuli in human
brain already in the early visual processing. Insulin can be a modulator of the central nervous
processing of the nutritional stimuli. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

On a side note:
Not that I believe this or not but I think this can become another excuse for some people. :(

That's exactly what it is - an excuse. It's complete and utter nonsense.

Unless you manage to take calories in through your eyes (in which case, you'd be a medical phenomenon and could make millions if you volunteer for tests), you can NOT gain weight by looking at food.

You also can not get Swine flu by looking at pictures of pigs, and you won't get pregnant by looking at pictures of a penis.

Seriously....:banghead:

SOOOOO... It's not MY fault I'm over weight! It's the pictures of food! THEIR EVERYWHERE!

OK so in order to lose weight I have to avoid looking at food I like. To help me avoid gaining extra weight while I'm trying to lose weight I think I will put on a blind fold and buy a guide dog.

Just one question....If I get a seeing eye dog and the dog can see the food will I still gain weight because I own the dog or an touching the dogs leash?

SIGH, PHEW...that's a relief. Because, I look at pictures of penises all...the...tiiiiime. I mean, I look at tooooons of penises every single day. So, you have no idea how relieved I am to hear that.

@BigLyn: Not entirely sure. Did you go anywhere with a lot of birds and bees? I think they have something to do with that....

@Chef: See, now you can breathe easy and enjoy your penises. Glad I could help!

I guess it depends on your definition of food, if you look at one of the eggs from the Aliens movies, it might stuff itself down your neck and cause you gain a bit of weight.
(wouldn't it be funny if they made pacifiers that look like that?)
