Feefi's diary

Hi guys here you all are so I came to join you :waving:

A few of my stats before I start my diary..

I'm 5'4", female, 39 yrs
Current weight 118kg
Ideal weight 60kg
Recently diagnosed as diabetic
Vegetarian (leaning towards veganism).

Pear shaped, meaning almost all my fat goes into my butt and thighs. I'm looking to target these fatty areas in particular so any exercises for them would be helpful

A short bio to explain my weight issues, it's all self inflicted I've no thyroid or genetic weight problems, I grew up a healthy size and started gaining weight during pregnancy in my 20s, I had a lifestyle change after I became a parent and have never been able to shift my weight since, I've tried loads of diets for over a decade and finally gave up and ate what I wanted after lacking the willpower to resist eating loads of food year after year.

The past 2 years in particular have been very challenging due to going through some difficult times, this resulted in me comfort eating like I never have done before and gaining more weight than usual, resulting in a few months ago starting to pass out numerous times and feel overwhelming fatigue, I went for blood tests again and found out I've developed diabetes.

I have refused the meds in the hope that I can bring my blood sugar down and my weight under control and hopefully reverse and even put in remission the diabetes, doc has given me 4 months to attempt it and I will be reviewed again in June. I'm told as I'm only just diagnosed I've yet no long term damage so this is possible and even likely if I can implement and stick to it.

Doc also said 60kg is my ideal healthy weight. Which means I'm basically twice the size I ought to be :(

I was surprised at this diagnosis because although I have high cholesterol I don't have a sweet tooth I eat very little desserts and sugary snacks and can easily go without them, but I was reminded by the doc that carbs are also stored as sugar if not burned up, so that's got to be it because I eat alot of carbs and don't exercise asides from walking.

I was also low on vitamins D and B12 and Iron. Doc gave very high dose supplements to bring them up and said I had to maintain lower doses after. I think this has to do with me not eating meat and then not supplementing it with foods which contain the same vitamins.

I stopped eating meat around 5 yrs ago, and stopped eating fish 2 years ago, I've also reduced my dairy consumption alot and hope to eventually eliminate all animal products. Not here for a debate on veganism just stating some facts about my diet:) so any advice on how I can stay healthy without animal products is also welcome.

That's enough rambling I reckon, now onwards and upwards to weight loss kingdom :driving:

Welcome to the forum, for future reference, you need to use BBcode to show a ticker in your signature, fixed it for you.

Great to see you here, feefi! And really terrific that you're tackling the diabetes head-on. My fist is clenched with determination for you!

So... three months - March, April, May - to lose enough to convince your doctor that you've got a workable plan in action. I think that's so achievable - not to get to sixty kilo, obviously, but to whittle away enough from the load that you, doctor and all can see that the plan is working.

I'm also a vego - and solidarity for that, because we both know that being vego rules out a lot of foods (like fish) which would otherwise be very helpful in losing weight. Good that your doctor has sorted you out with a vitamin supplement, but you'll want to be tracking protein pretty earnestly as well. I have never done this before this year, and even yet I'm a bit desultory about it - but we vegos really should. How do you try to keep up protein? Eggs? Tofu? I guess not eggs, because of the inklings towards veganism.
(Salt-reduced Vegemite, by the way, has B12, as well as other B vitamins.)

I'm sorry you've had a stressful couple of years - that can wreak havoc on the body in all sorts of ways, including (I'm convinced) how it handles nutrition - ie it's not just comfort eating. But yes, food is so available, and it does help get through a dark time, or help release anger (it's been mentioned on this site before, angry eating, as well as comfort eating.) I guess time to tap everybody's ideas for alternative ways to deal with stress. :)

Meanwhile - on with the vegies and the fruit! Carrot! Broccoli! Tomatoes! or a glorious multi-hued fruit platter, as seen recently on @Cate's diary! And on with the healthy walks - see you on the track! :)

(Forgot to say - I really love your groovy tracker, with bicycle and rainbow!)

Hey Feefi, good to see that you started a diet!

I am no vegetarian so can't help a whole lot there, but lots of other folks here are, like Amy Aminglow, and like Amy are usually willing to help.

My only advice comes from personal experience, reduce your calories to fewer than you burn and you will lose weight, simple as that. And some form of tracking and posting here will help you stick to things.

You will find no debates on the merits of vegetarianism here. People here don't promote any one approach over another, we just try to help people find the right approach for themselves and stick to it. Not that we are above giving advice, just not many arguments.

Best of luck to you, and I look forward to following your progress!

Hi Feefi and welcome!
Unless you´re very diligent about vegan B12 sources it´s easiest to just stick with a supplement for the long term. Nerve damage is not to be trifled with. Do you know veganhealth.org and theveganrd.com ? Veganism CAN be healthy, it just takes a bit more thought than an omnivore diet (says an omnivore who know some vegans). Best of luck with your goals.

Nice to meet you @Feefi :) I am also vegetarian and have been for more than 20 years. Did your doctor have any diet suggestions to both lose weight and address the diabetes? I wonder if a nutritionist or someone could draw up a good plan for you...
Might help to write out here what you eat each day so others can make suggestions and also helps you track what you are eating.

Thanks for all the advice and support!

Thanks Trusylver:) I somehow managed to mess it up again when I tried to update it.. lol

Thanks Amy, I'll ty the vegemite, I do eat tofu and also use the mycoprotein fillets from quorn to substitute for chicken, soya milk, nuts, beans and lentils, I've also gotten vegan protein powders both pea and rice based and add them to drinks sometimes if I've been having veggies with no protein all day. I liked the tracker too but have lost it during an update going to try and find it again..

Thanks Gator and LaMaria, will do and I'll have a look at those sites.

Thanks Lisa, doc referred me to a dietician still waiting on the appointment, they also checked my feet for any nerve loss and said I have to go for an eye test, all a part of being diagnosed they assured me it's routine. I'll defo get onto logging everything, I'm determined to lose this weight once and for all and would love to see the progress unfold.

Having said that it's not been a productive day dietwise, I told myself I'm starting on a Monday and have been eating up all the yummy carbs in the cupboards over the weekend. On the upside I have not purchased any more sugary drinks/food since being diagnosed.

Sounds like your doctors are taking things seriously and looking after you, which is always nice to hear.

Hello!! Over here Rob:waving: good grief has it really been so long already?

I hope everybody is okay:grouphug:..! As you all know a pandemic hit not long after I started here, I'm disappointed to say I lost my newfound willpower and my health stopped being my priority and I started overeating again, due to the lockdown I also became more inactive than usual which resulted in further weight gain:ambivalence:..

But I'm back and more determined to get this done:party: I've no idea what I weight now only that I'm much bigger than I was 8 months ago, will be getting another weighing scale the other one fell from the shelf and doesn't seem to be working right since.

The biggest changes asides from my weight gain is fatigue, I'm incredibly tired for too much of the day it's not normal, I sleep excessively and am taking b12 and vit d supplements but they aren't helping, I've been told it's been happening to alot of people due to lockdown so any advice to help stave off the exhaustion is welcome:sleeping:

I did go for regular walks in the park but haven't been doing that too much lately, I want to restart that and to begin some indoor exercises. I used to be so active out and about all the time and now can't keep my eyes open I've no energy.

I've so now a blood monitor to keep an eye on my sugar levels and they haven't changed dramatically so that's good news, better news would be if they had improved but I can't expect miracles if I'm doing nothing to help myself achieve them.

Hope u guys are all well and I look forward to catching up with your posts!:cheers2:

Hi Feefi and welcome back. A lot of people are struggling right now, myself included, but one thing that hasn't changed is that life's generally easier when we don'tcarry extra weight around so it'sgood to see you finding your feet again. I watched a video last night where a psychologist explained our brains constantly try to predict the future in order to help us stay safe. Not having a template for the near future or being wrong in those predictions is stressful and exhausting. And that's what's going on in the world right now so maybe it plays a role in your exhsustion as well. One way to conserve (mental) energy is by having set routines. For example if you always go for a walk right after getting up (at a set time) very soon it becomes something you just do without having to think about it or needing to convince yourself. Just my two cents. Best of luck with your renewed efforts!

Welcome back Feefi!

You know your size is less important that that you are back and getting on track, do that and your size will follow and get where you want it to be.

The walks are a great idea, a very good form of exercise. How is you diet? What are you trying to do there?

Hope you are here to stay this time, it would be good to have you around.

You've got this Feefi! Keeping a daily log has helped keeping me on track so far, hopefully it does the same for you.

Hey, Fi. Welcome back. I thought I had posted here yesterday, but my message was still sitting here. We have a great community spirit happening in the forum at the moment so our cheer squad has grown. Try getting out for walks even though you may not feel like it. Walking is so good for my mental health. Don't rush it. Take the time to enjoy small things you see along the way.

Thank you all for the welcome back xx

It's been ages again but now I've my willpower back I'm ready to do this! Am bigger than when I started my jeans a year ago don't fit me now, but my willpower is definitely back so I know I can do this now.

I started on Monday by cutting out all unhealthy snacks, so no more snacking on biscuits and crisps! I've replaced them with fruit and veg. Secondly I've cut down my meal portions, I've been eating way too much and refilling my plate, since Monday only one normal sized portion during mealtimes.

I've committed to these 2 things for now with more to follow but want to get used to this first, with the fatty snacks gone and only normal portions at mealtimes it's sure to cause a dent in the weight gain, yay!!

Welcome back Feefi! You have got this - just take it one step at a time and before you know it you'll be there.

Best of luck with the restart. We all stumble sometimes but as long as we keep getting up we'll get there eventually.

Thanks everybody:waving: my emojis are working again yah!!:rotflmao:

Done good today no junk and I resisted the chip shop on my way back home which for me is a milestone, really pleased with myself.
Going to do all my stats again like weight and such before Monday so I can track my progress again.
