Ego "Grunting" in the Gym...

I love when you have a bunch of loud young meathead football players in the gym working on thier 1 rep max on bench and grunting like they are moving the earth and all endlesly hi-fiving each other. I'll walk over to them, and I'm 45 years old and 175 lbs soaking wet, and say. "Mind if I jump in for a warm up set?" Then I'll throw that weight up for 10 or 12 reps....no muss, no fuss, thank them and quietly walk away.

You workout in high school weight rooms?

...Most guys that have issues with grunters or other people they perceive as having big ego’s tend to be insecure themselves IMO and the problem they have is just a little jealousy. If you’re not making any noise when lifting then you probably need to put another plate on the bar and stop being such a wuss, it’s people that make no noise when they lift that often annoy me as they’re doing their 50lb OH presses without breaking sweat taking up room on the floor that someone who actually wanted to lift could have been using

You're serious? Come on man, that's not true and you know it. Jealous of the loud mouth ego guys? Um, don't think so! BTW, I could probably lift more weight than most of them put together. It's not about that, it's about annoying people who think they own the gym and show off. That was my point. Oh yea, and I'm not insecure. LOL! People who are confident don't need to prove it to the world every second. Usually the calm, quiet guys are the ones you need to be careful with. ;) The loud annoying dudes rely on their mouth more than their brawn because that's all they really have deep down.

Confident guys don't get annoyed by other people making grunting noises and start assuming that they must be trying to show off.

Confident guys get to the gym, do their lifting, get out again.

Amen.

I feel like I'm surrounded by children from some of the responses so I guess I'm done here. The grunts are ganging up on me. Oh no! :action13:

You see, when you insult a big ego they tend to get upset so I won't torture you guys anymore. lol

Happy Grunting!

Start playing that song, "I'm too sexy for" and they'll bust their ego down a notch. :)

Naaa...the might enjoy that too much. I'm sure those guys go home at night and flex in the bathroom mirror for hours winking at themselves while their girlfriends roll their eyes wishing they had a real man. LOL!

Lol!

I'd rather listen to the sounds of hard work than the sounds of polite weakness.

That, and I usually just crank my music up. On a related note, I noticed I was grunting more than usual today, but I think that's because I was light headed and felt like puking

Come on guys...let's not attack the OP and turn this into a p!ss!ng contest.

There are people who grunt because they're cranking iron and really getting into their workouts. LOL, in my own home gym there are times when I'm yelling, screaming and singing along to System of a Down "Let the bodies hit the floor"...and I'm all alone and not looking for attention. It's just part of getting psyched and cranking it up a notch. In martial arts the "keya" is an audible expression that adds to the power and exertion. Some people are audible, others aren't...but in all cases the guys who walk the walk do their thing regardless of what the posseurs are doing and a good MP3-player can put your in your zone and remove you from others (good suggestion!)

At the same time, there are plenty of attention punks whose verbal exploits are entirely intended to draw attention and it's all part of a show....and I'm pretty sure the OP was referring to these such posuers. Hey, confident guys can get annoyed too. :)

Do what ya do and don't worry about others....at the same time, there are plenty of people who can be annoying, and some of them are downright fun to mock because they're just too funny, like swollen-chest dude, bandana-man, rock-star and others.

On that note, there's a trainer at my gym who attends the Sunday morning spin-class...this gal sits up front, stays in a low race position (cause ya know how aerodynamics can affect you on a stationary bike) and she gets all into it....she's known for making these really long & loud "ohhhhh-yeeeeahhhhhhh" scream-moans. You don't have to imagine what this chick is like in the bedroom, cause she's verbally going at it right there in class. I find it disruptive because it cracks me up. Is it for attention? I don't know...but like a verbal beacon screaming-out in the night, she just permeates the room with her verbal discourse.

Hate to bring up this thread again, but I was thinking about this while in the gym the other day. I figure when there's enough activity/noise in the gym, and someone is making themselves audible for others to hear, that could possibly be considered "ego grunting"...

While I sort of chuckle at folks that do make themselves noticeable in the gym, for the most part I just ignore it and just do what I do. I know what I'm there for and what I'm capable of, so that's all that matters to me!

I did bulgarian squats off a box (to increase ROM) with rest pause sets the other day. If I hadn't grunted like a pig, I wouldn't have gotten as many reps, I can tell you that. If you push yourself very hard, there is gonna be some sound.

But continually being loud, IMO, isn't totally neccessary. Could be just me though  But I respect the fact that you, as well as others, make some noise while lifting. I agree that some sound is going to come out if you push yourself hard. I've done lots of work on 4x4's/Trucks/etc and know that I can make a helluva racket when trying to loosen/tighten stuff, or get parts that don't fit to line up right :)

I love farting when im repping as well, sometime's all the pressure leads to some decent skid marks.
I'd hate to be next to you in the gym when that happens! :cool3:

I've done that too, but without the skid marks (I wipe properly ;)).
I remember using the leg slede, I was going heavy for maybe a 3-5 rep range push; lowered the weight and on pushing up I really let one rip, really loud. I wanted to laugh but I had this massive weight pushing down on me so I had to try and keep it together to avoid the further humiliation of having to ask people to help me get out while smelling the foul odour I'd created

:) You think so? I hope that's not a rule! LOL
