Ego "Grunting" in the Gym...

Does anyone else get annoyed by the typical pump each other workout partners who are very loud and grunt and try to draw attention to themselves? I try to avoid my gym at those times. I'd rather workout at 10:00pm to have a nice workout. Some dudes are just too damn annoying in the gym.

:angry3:

depends what you mean by grunting? I think it's OK to pump each other up before lifting. Some people need it to get to their optimal level of arousal.

I mean like the type who are very loud and look around as they slam the weights down to see how many people are looking at them. THAT kind! I feel these dudes are really insecure deep down and want the attention or something. Hard to figure them out.

I've only been hitting up the gym for the past few weeks now, but I notice a little bit of this while there. The gym I joined has two locations in town so I mix it up a bit and do a couple days at one, another at the other location... But at each there's been someone, not every day at least, that has to grunt or do something to make themselves noticeable. I was talking to a friend about joining and he said that's one reason he doesn't want to go to a gym, that and he hates everyone looking at him. I told him it's no biggie and to just ignore everyone, you know what you're capable of and what you're there for, and that's all that matters. No need to "prove" yourself...

But I figure if there's a hot chick staring at you, you might as well look back and/or show off :D

Another thing I can't stand is when you pass someone and make eye contact and audibly say something like, "What's up", or "Hey", or whatever...and they totally look at you and ignore you. LOL! WTF? I think that's just rude as it comes. It's not like they didn't hear you. One guy did that to me once at my gym. Guess what? I don't look at him and as far as I'm concerned he doesn't exist, just like I didn't.

People can be such idiots. The older I get the more I hate the gym scene. Wish I had the money and wife who would let me make a gym in the basement but that's not gonna happen. Ugh.

MP3 players= teh win for not hearing others
A simple head nod= avoiding those annoying 'not saying hey back to you' people

And why won't your wife let you build a gym in the basement? Wait...what's up with spouses forbiding spouses to do things???

Personally, I grunt when I am lifting heavy or trying to push that last rep in. Mine is slightly audioable and it's a setting meter for me. For bench press, I grunt on the lift off so my workout partner knows to lift the bar off for me. On squat, I grunt slightly as I am pushing that last rep out while my body is wobbling. It's not to get attention but rather to go that extra mile.

But I know what the OP means. There are guys in the gym that puts up an act to get attention; trying to show off. I mean wow, you can bench 315 lbs while your buddy is "spotting" you. Ok, he was pulling the bar up for you and you actually did 225. Come on, gruntling, shadow boxing and heavy breathing.... whatever. Oh btw, you will see guys that put up all those act and then decide not to even attempt the weight. :)

Sounds stupid but i've realised people adopt a certain grunt/noise to help lift. I've just adopted a new grunt recently, and for some reason it really helps.

I think it's a way to get adrenaline going. You get people who grunt loud as f**k and shout etc, then you get people who are silent.

I think there's maybe the odd person who does it to show off, and just make's the noise on purpose, but most it's a way to help lift! IMO :)

:lmao: do you sound like Jackie Chan or some famous movie star? I think peeps should post their grunts on youtube or somethin huh? :D

Believe it or not there's a gym for peeps like you

I don’t give a **** to be honest, the only guy that’s ever pissed me off in the gym was someone who was singing along loudly to his MP3 player like he was at a karaoke bar.
Most guys that have issues with grunters or other people they perceive as having big ego’s tend to be insecure themselves IMO and the problem they have is just a little jealousy. If you’re not making any noise when lifting then you probably need to put another plate on the bar and stop being such a wuss, it’s people that make no noise when they lift that often annoy me as they’re doing their 50lb OH presses without breaking sweat taking up room on the floor that someone who actually wanted to lift could have been using

You guys spend way to much time listening and looking at what other people are doing in the gym. Get in, do what you gotta do, and get out. If your focused enough on your own training, you won't notice what other people are doing.

LOL, well said.

LOL, well said.

Haha, cheers

That guy was really loud too, I was looking round for a hidden camera as it looked like something from a TV wind-up show, he was singing at full volume.

Other than that, I'm with LV, who gives a damn about gunts? They're perfectly natural if you're lifting heavy and they just blend into the background so I don't even notice them anymore

That is the worst gym in the world.

It may not be my cup of tea (or yours), but the OP sounds like he would luv to be in Planet Fitness rather than a proper gym. The OP mentions people being insecure but from the sound of things he actually sounds insecure.

yes, that's annoying.

sometimes you have to grunt on that last rep, but it should not be so loud that the whole gym notices. that's just showboating.

I love when you have a bunch of loud young meathead football players in the gym working on thier 1 rep max on bench and grunting like they are moving the earth and all endlesly hi-fiving each other. I'll walk over to them, and I'm 45 years old and 175 lbs soaking wet, and say. "Mind if I jump in for a warm up set?" Then I'll throw that weight up for 10 or 12 reps....no muss, no fuss, thank them and quietly walk away.
