Hi,

I was wondering... I can't drink just plain water cause the taste bothers me, and I know I'm supposed to drink at least five 16oz bottled waters a day, and I do... but does that still count if I'm using the bottled water flavoring packets like Crystal Light or Lipton Tea To Go with no calories or nutritional values? Or does the water have to be plain/pure?

Spend some time reading around the forum - there's a lengthy thread on water that pretty much dispels the myth that you MUST take in XX amount of water a day...

You need to drink as much water as your body needs - how much your body needs is really dependent on your body - and the easiest way to monitor this is to note the color of your urine... Unless your on medication or have some underlying health condition, if your body is properly hydrated, then your urine should be a pale yellow.

As for Crystal Light -there have been some studies I've seen that state artifical sweeteners can stimulate the appetite - some find this to be true, others not so much... it's up to your body.

A nutritionist I had spoken to a while back had said that beverages other than water (in my case, coffee) shouldn't be your only liquid consumption for the day as long as water counts for 1/2 your fluid intake and you're accounting for calories than drink what you like.

I avoid chemicals whenever possible, so I wouldn't find it a healthy change to to increase my consumption of calorie free, yet highly unnatural substances/chemicals that are contained in diet drinks. You might try 1 part juice to 4 parts water. It has a few calories, but you can keep it under 40 calories per serving if you dont use much. Or try a splash of lemon in some cold water. I also drink a lot of tea with a little milk, that's really good too and the hot drink with the milk can help curb hunger.

I'm with the others, the chemicals in Crystal Light and others are just not good for you, if I had a choice, I'd rather drink refined sugar. My best friend has an aversion to water, she can't stand it. So she has been trying some concentrated juice (cranberry or POM) and putting a little in water. the ration is like 3:1 (3 water: 1 juice). Or Decaf unsweetened iced tea with lemon. I say decaf b'cause apparently caffine dehydrates you and then you'll have to intake more water.

well, my 2 cents is this....although the 'chemicals' in C.L. arn't great for you...I THINK its better to drink that then pop. Some people are 'addicted" to pop, so to switch to C.L, I don't see the crime in it.

Are you talking about sugar soda or diet soda? I would bet the ingredients in the CL are the same as diet soda (minus the fizzy water), a bunch of artificial chemicals that are doing G knows what to our insides. I'm with Busy, I'd rather drink sugar than chemicals.

BTW, its not like I never eat or drink my junk food, complete with chemicals and unhealthy fats, but I wouldn't mistake these foods and drinks as a part of a healthy lifestyle so nor would I equate CL with a healthy lifestyle. Anything is OK in moderation, but I wouldn't drink packets and packets of the stuff in lieu of fresh cold water (maybe mixed with some natural juice or other flavoring).

newbride,

I think anything is better than pop. I think that is the worst stuff on earth behind alcohol.

My rational is this. If anyone cares.

When I drink a drink with sugar (not pop), I know what is in it. I know what sugar is. Even thought it is refined, it is from a natural product. Something from the earth. I know what it does, it rots your teeth, makes you fat, gives you acne and can increase the risk of diabities.

When I drink a drink with aspartame or similar, I have no idea what it is. I mean, what is phenylalanine, 1-methyl ester anyway? I have no idea, but I know what sucrose, lactose, and fructose are.

Just my rationalization of it all.

chemicals aside, its water and if you want to count it, then do. its your body, not ours. i personally stayed away from fake sugar for a long time but lately i've started drinking crystal light lemonade. i make it for my husband because he was consuming obscene amounts of sugar each day. you could also use something like stevia to sweeten unsweetned drinks like tea that you make yourself. i use it in anything that needs a bit of sweetness.

can I count my tea as water?

ok, I know this is a silly question.

I am trying to drink a certain amount of ounces each day of water. I realize tea is just leaves/herbs, etc. so I can count my 8 oz. tea as 8 oz. of water and check it off on my water list, right?

I put Splenda in it, too. But that's 0 calorie.

Thanks!

there's a very lengthy thread around here on water and how much you do or don't need... so spend some time reading... there's a lot of really valuable information that will help you get to your goal and most importantly -stay there.

Don't get too hung up on thinking you need to get xxx amount of water a day -there's really no one size fits all number for fluids...barring any physical condition or medication or vitamins your taking - monitor the color of your urine when you pee - it should be pale yellow -(heavy doses of vitamin b can make it almost neon which is cool) if your urine is a darker yellow (again, barring any medical conditions) you're dehydrated a-nd hydration is good for your insides and outsides...

but back to your original question - if you're keeping track of fluids -then teas and non water should really count towards half your water for the day...

and by non waters your talking about fruits as well right?? like watermelon and canalope are almost all water.

Thanks, Maleficent. I have been reading the stickies as much as I can, and posting in between with questions that come up.

I am not getting TOO stuck on making sure I have x,y,z ounces, per se. Just shooting for a MINIMUM, you know? I have a hard time remembering to hydrate and it gets to the point where I get headaches every day and am tired, etc. and I find that the more water I drink, the better I feel. Obviously. lol.

Thanks again! :) Glad to be here.
