Does it REALLY matter how late you eat dinner?

I eat a full meal just before hitting the sheets.

Really? Man, I can't fall asleep. I feel like every time I start to drift off, I can hear myself digesting and it wakes me up.

My fiance can't either. But he has screwy heartburn. Even if he's taken his medicine, the valve doesn't work and the food comes up even if he's practically sitting up while asleep. Yet he still loves midnight snacks...and then complains about not being able to sleep in the morning!

You can hear digestion? Holy shit you have good hearing! :p

In truth, I've met quite a few people who can't eat too close to bed b/c it keeps them up for a number of reasons.

Not me though. I can chow down while laying in bed, lol, and be asleep within minutes.

I think that for the most part it really doesn't matter when you eat your calories. The thing that kind of sticks with me is to have enough calories to burn when you need them. If you are running on empty all day working, running, chores and whatnot, you won't be doing these things to the fullest. Your daily burn will be less. Then you eat a bunch of calories after you are done for the day and sit around watching TV or whatever and then go to bed. That can't be helpful. Eating a couple hundred calories later I don't think makes a big difference, but if you are getting your bulk of calories after the day is done, you might want to change that around a bit.

I actually eat the majority of my calories in the early pat of the day. And I don't care much for TV. Too inactive for me. So in that sense, I am ok...

I once got a personal trainer for a few sessions at the gym. I already had my eating program from my dietician and knew my nutritional stuff, but he insisted on giving me some pointers. My goals (as I told the trainer) were to "lose weight and tone up" ...duh!!

"Don't eat after 5pm" WHAT?????

I thought that eating more of my calorie during the day time would work well, but found out that I need to spread them really evenly, otherwise I get hungry and bingy!

You can't be serious.

I'm glad someone covered this. I'm a veterinary technician and my hours vary from working a 530p-12a shift, a midnight-8am shift, a 8am-6pm or a noon-6pm shift. Those hours are funky when you're trying to not eat after 8pm. If I not home at 8am...and slept until 5pm...I'd have to consume all of my calories within a 2 hour span! Now, I could do it...but talk about throwing off your clock! What I do is calculate 24 hours and divide my calories accordingly. Midnight starts a new day in my book. It's easier to calculate calories that way. After I've had my "final meal for the day", I don't eat again until midnight or whenever I wake up for the day. I now also have to wonder if this is not why nurses in the medical field tend to be heavier set.
