Do you think I can do it?

......

Hey guys! Well, I got some measuring tape to figure out how tall I am.....

I am actually at the 5'5" line. I was so shocked, and I still am. For some reason, I feel really awkward now.

Akward? Why? 5'5" is a great height for a girl.

I'd use the dumbbells more than once in a while.. regular strength training will help you long term.

Focus less on getting to a specific number on the scale - at 5'8 you're not short, 120lbs might be too low for you - no one except your doctor ever have to know what you weight -focus on building healthy habits that you can take with you for the rest of your life... and what you're seeing in the mirror...

5'8" at 120 lbs is a BMI of 18.5. 18.2 and under is underweight. I think the OP can probably achieve a healthy weight (120-160) in one year, but she'd have to lose 107 lbs to hit 160 in one year. I think that is a much more realistic and achievable goal; I am on course to hit about 107 lbs lost in the same amount of time. Right now I'm 26.4 lbs away from my goal of 150 lbs (weighed in at 176.4 this morning), and I started out at 256.6 lbs on July 5th, 2008. My goal is to weigh 150 lbs on or before July 4th, 2009.

So yeah, I'm living proof that you can lose that amount of weight in that amount of time. Whether I can keep it off is another story!

Hello everyone! I'm back! I know it's been a while, but I'm doing fine. So yesterday I hopped on the scale and it read 226! Which means I have lost 80 pounds so far! Yay! Well, I guess that's about all for now. See ya!

That's awesome. Looks like things are really going well for you.

Heck, I'd almost be worried that you are losing weight _too_ fast.

You must feel great these days!

I have no doubt that you probably COULD do it but make sure you're not pushing yourself too hard. You'll lose a lot of weight at the beginning and eventually that will slow down. I'm not sure if you're worried about excess skin but make sure that your calorie deficit comes from exercise more than nutrition in order to help curb the effects of losing that much weight so quickly. I would set a six month goal and if you meet that, maybe re-evaluate if you want to keep that goal or not. Just don't get too focused on meeting a weight target because if you don't meet it, you might get disappointed and not be able to appreciate how much hard work you've put into yourself. I rely on inches more than scales because scales are an inaccurate reflection of your body fat percentage. My best friend, for example, has one of the best bodies I have ever seen and she is 5'6" and 155 pounds but she is total solid, defined muscle. Her BMI would make her on the heavy side of normal when she is in, fact, super tiny.

Either way, sounds like you're in it to win it, so good job! Whether you can get it off in a year or whether it takes a bit longer, confidence makes all the difference in achieving a goal! GOOD LUCK!

If you don't mind me asking, do you have a lot of excess skin from losing that much weight that quickly?
I have a bit of a worry about excess skin from losing weight. I refuse to undergo procedures (allergic to anaesthetic, yay me) and I am really focused on taking it super slow so that my body doesn't look gross after. To me, that's the biggest insult: working so hard to lose weight and then looking awful naked because of excess skin.

Here's the deal, I want to be about 120lbs. by my 21st birthday.
I'll give all of my details and then I want to know everyones honest opinion.

I am 19, female, around 5'8", non-smoker, doesn't drink(not only because I'm under-age, I just don't like the taste of achohol, lol), never had a child, and my 21st birthday is March of 2010.

I first started my weight loss November 8th 2008 at 306lbs, and today I am 267lbs. I eat the right foods, and the right amount of calories. I eat 5 small meals a day and drink water, which has helps me realize when I am actually hungry.

I walk/speed walk/jog every night on my treadmill for about 70 minutes, use 10 pound dumbbells(once in a while) and use my resistance bands and balance ball(that I got for Christmas, yay me!).

I am TOTALLY dedicated to this and I think I am doing well so far. I just want to know if anyone thinks my goals are reachable, and if anyone had any advice for me.

Thanks alot!

Hi cathaea,
I would say your goal is definitely reachable. According to my calculations you need to lose about 6 and a half kilos each month, which is possible, especially with all the exercise you're doing. If you stick to your plan, I'm certain you will succeed.
Keep up the great work and all the best! :)

Hi! Hi! Hi!

Hello everyone! It's been so long since I've been here! How is everyone? Well, I've come to update abit about myself.

I've come to realize that my goals from before were a little unrealistic. But I'm pretty happy with how everything has been going so far. I am now about 185-189lbs!( not exact because I've gone a little crazy this holiday with all the cakes and hams and crap :puke: haha) Which means I've lost about 120lbs so far! But I feel I've hit a plateau  I'm going to start back with my regular eating in the morning since I'm so over the holiday food.

I hope to get down to about 120lbs(or even less) some time in the future. I have learned not to put an exact date on when I want to be a certain size. I'll work hard and let the weight loss follow (hopefully it'll follow faster than I hope) lol.

Also, anyone want to be my (online) support buddy? Though I've come this far, I still feel I need someone who's going through the same thing to talk with.

Byebye~

Hey , congrats on dropping the weight. One thing to look at might be to reevaluate your caloric needs. If you've dropped tha tmuch weight, your calorie count should drop a decent bit as well.

I don't know how much people look at things like that, but it did come to mind myself since I have a goal of losing about as much as you have right now. In teh meantime, why don't you share with the class what you've done so far, since obviously, you're doing something quite right.

Hey again! Wow!!! You've lost a HEAP of weight! Congratulations and keep it up!!! If you need inspiration and affirmation, just know that in all this time, while I haven't lost an ounce, you have gotten down to a weight that is about the same as me... only I am only 5'5, if that. You must look great! I'd love to see some before and after pics!!! And if you want a support buddy, look no further.. I could really use one too! I think you'll help me stay on my toes. Cheers you dynamo! :)

Hey~

Hello Big D! Actually, one thing I was worried about was decreasing my calories. When I started, I was eating around 1200 calories a day. I'm scared to go any lower now because I might not be able to eat what I need. So I'm thinking of just upping the workouts. I eat a alot of different things, just not alot of it. I really love Asian food, especially Japanese rice (I eat it almost everyday.) I know people say I should switch to brown/whole grain rice, but I just can't get with it-taste or texture-. Hehe.I also eat alot of veggies, fruits and I love seafood (including sea veggies a.k.a seaweed). I may seem like I'm doing fine, but I'm actually kind of panicking over what I should do next.

And hi Shinsplint! I am actually the same height as you! I would post before and afters, but I never took a full body shot of myself before (of course I would never take a full body pic at 306+ pounds). I do have before photos, but I'm WAYYY to embarrassed to show anyone. And to be honest, I'm still very scared to take a full body photo of myself, even though I've lost some weight. Maybe after I've lost a little more, I'll be willing so show my rolls of glory. haha And it would be cool to talk with you!

Rolls of glory.. oh I love it! Humor is important in life, and it begins with being able to laugh at/about ourselves first.

1200 is very low even at your current weight, which makes me hesitant to give any real advice since I'm way out of my element in that area. Refeeding and/or reingniting your metabolism comes to mind, but you might want to see if Steve chimes in, or consult a professional on that one.

In the meantime, I'd fathom just keep doing what you're doing and maybe your body just needs some time to readjust, recouperate and such, as long as you're feeling ok.

I'm with Big D in thinking that you may want to up your calories to fire up your metabolism. Here are some tips to use when upping calories:

1. Keep it very clean. Try to make sure every bite you take is valuable nutritionally. Eat whole grains, veggies, fruit, and lean proteins.

2. Up your calories by one hundred per week, and take detailed measurements to see the result.

3. Try to keep each "meal" small and eat as often as possible.

4. Take measuring tape and/or body fat caliper measurements so you can track fat loss even during weeks where your weight may stay the same.

Thanks guys!

I was also thinking of upping my calories too. I have no idea what made me think 1200 calories would be enough. I guess I'll slowly add more to my menu.

I always used to go by what the scale said, so I never really took any measurments. I guess I should leave the scale alone for a while.

congradulations on your weight loss so far
i believe you can do it so far way i lost most of mine is i cut out my soda i still have one every now and then but not like i use to im thinking about cutting out my bread as well hope that helps me but could be idea it probly was already posted i just read your first one decided to comment wow be a great birthday present to your self not to mention how great you will look and feel as well wish you luck:iagree:

Your weight loss really inspires me! I would love to have you as a weight loss buddy. Last year I lost about 70lbs and got down to 232 from a high of 307. Now I find myself back at 306 this morning...and Im utterly astonished how fast I gained it back over a few months, but Im ready to re-lose it and finally get down to my goal of 130. Im 5'6" and 25 yrs old.

I have a hard time controlling my urge to overeat...and I tend to go to extremes. Either Im eating 3000 calories a day or Im fasting for days at a time...fasting is the only way I've been able to lose weight...I know its not good, but if I start eating, its hard to stop. Any advice on how to control that...anyone?

Hello!!

Hello lilbrat40!
I also cut out soda completely. I don't even like sparkling cider. I just don't really like the feeling of sizzling sugary liquid anymore. haha I love bread and other baked goods too much to cut them out. For my everyday, I usually eat whole grain wheat bread (sandwiches etc), but I also like a good slice of white every now and again. I also wish you luck in your journey!

Hi Karmic!
I'm glad I could inspire someone. If I can do it, so can you! I only really have urges to overeat when I'm up really late at night. So I try to keep my sleeping in check. Another thing you could do is portion stuff out. I'm not one to bust out a food scale and measure everything I eat, but I do read the labels so I know if I want a little more, how much it'll cost me calorie wise.
I know alot of people say this, but eating 4-6 times a day is really a good idea! I eat 5 times a day!(breakfast 7am, mid-morning snack10am, lunch1pm, afternoon snack4pm and dinner at 7pm).Alot of people say snacking is the enemy, but they are so wrong (in my opinion). The way I look at it is, if you have a HEALTHY snack between meals, it'll lessen the urge to over eat when it's mealtime. I eat a variety of snacks! I always try to add fruit as a part of my snack. Sometimes I'll have a boiled egg, or some Special K crackers. Lately I have been eating fiber plus bars and some fruit because I don't eat as much fiber as I'm supposed to. Pre-pack your snack so when you need a little something to nibble on, you'll always have a healty alternative, rather than rummaging through bags of chips and cookies etc! And if you do find yourself wanting a little more, you know how many calories etc it'll be so you won't be all surprised when it's time to get on the scale.
A few other ways I keep my eating in check is to use smaller plates and bowls. It'll lessen your chance of piling unnessesary things on your plate. But don't be shy to add a little more veggies if you aren't satisfied! Chewing slowly and actually tasting the food helps you be aware of the food you're eating! Don't forget to drink water while you're eating! While I eat, I take a few gulps of water after every few bites or so. It makes me feel fuller, so I won't have to fill the void with more food. Also, if you're the one cooking, make sure your food has FLAVOR! There is nothing worse than trying to eat healthy when the food tastes like cardboard! Try out different spices, seasonings and cooking methods! I have a few more to add, but I just can't think of them right now. haha
If you want to ask me anything else, just let me know!

p.s.
I am no expert! This was all MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE! So if anyone doesn't agree with what I'm writing, please share you're thoughts in a respectable manner! Thank you!

AutumnNight~

Thank you so much for all the advice. Though I think my problem with overeating is mental rather than physical. Smaller portions dont really work for me since I know there's more in the fridge....I'll just keep getting more, knowing that I should stop, but finding it almost impossible to be able to. I may just have to deal with the fact that I'm going to be feeling very frustrated and very hungry at first. I try to buy healthy foods, but of course that doesnt help if I eat tons of it...uggh, Im a food addicted mess.

And your advice about seasonings gave me a different idea. I live alone, so I do cook all of my food, and I tend to buy very tasty things--which makes me want to pig out on it...so I think I will start using less seasoning actually and eat blander food. It may just help. Thanks again for responding!
