Disgusting.. Average age to lose their virginity

i did not really have parents. was raised in foster homes til age 16 and then became ward of the state at 16 and sent to live in a group home for adolescents. with being abused as a child and usually no father figure in the picture and having no real structure you would figure that i'd be a mess (ie on drugs, pregnant, etc) but i turned out fine.

anyway, found my birthmother at 18 and found out my mom had another daughter and 2 sons. my sister who was raised in a much better setting than me ended up pregnant at 17. there just really isnt any logic behind it all.

there are so many variables that play on each child as to when they have sex, that I don't think anything can be the sole cause ... parents, media, and peer pressure ...
I think the media and schools do a good job of informing kids about what choices they have and how to protect themselves.
For example, look at siblings ... parented exactly the same way, yet they can end up completely different. Or, in some twin studies, two children are raised completely seperate in different states by different parents and they end up almost exactly the same (even the same career, in some cases).

Yea I agree CDNBOY. I guess all that you can do as parents is just to do what you think is best, and hope things turn out well.

Wonderwoman, I'm sorry you had such a rough up bringing! I bet that will just help you to be a fabulous mother!!

I really doubt that the average age of losing your virginity is 13 years old. I remember in 8th grade the girls who had had sex before were the rarity and all the other girls would kinda listen in awe because they'd not gotten anywhere near that far, and that was less than 10 years ago. Thirteen? It just doesn't sound realistic.
But at the same time...I personally think most 14 year old girls are responsible and mature enough to start having sex so long as they are educated about it.

nysq, you'd be surprised how 13/14 year old kids are behaving these days. When I was 13, there was the talk about several kids having sex. I think there was about 5-6 of us out of the 200 in our grade. I'm not surprised that more 14 year olds are doing it, but younger? They don't seem mature enough to be that sexual, and comfortable with themselves.

That's very disturbing. My godsister isn't a virgin anymore (and is a teen mother, omly a year older than I am), and that was shocking to me, since I never expected it of her. But her parents were getting divorced and all she ever wanted was to be loved, but her mom was going through depression so it was very hard for the family.

I think the media is partially to blame, partially the parents, and then peer pressure and all that jazz. I'm 17 and still a virgin (and proud of it), so I don't quite understand the need to have sex until marriage, so it's very depressing and disturbing.
