Weight-Loss Diet Sodas

Weight-Loss
After much trial and error with calorie-less drinks, I have come to the conclusion that whenever I have one it lowers my blood sugar to the point that I get hungry. I believe this has to do with consuming something sweet-tasting and my body having the expectation of digesting sugar and releasing insulin to cope with the expected rise in blood sugar. But since there is no sugar, the insulin just takes my blood sugar lower. Result: hunger. So now I try and avoid sugarless drinks (either artificial or stevia) unless I'm going to eat something before long anyway. I know they'll make me hungry!

From my anecdotal perspective, diet soda has been great for me. Pre-diet I could easily go through a twelve pack of mt. dew in 2 days. I still drink that much soda, only in diet. I know I should switch to water, but I just don't like it and every time I do that I drop off the bandwagon. So, for something that keeps me going on my diet, diet soda is great.

Water may be best, but if you are addicted to soda diet soda can provide a temporary alternative while you practice the rest of your new lifestyle.

I just don't like the idea of sodas in general. All of that sugar and high fructose corn syrup is not good for you even if there are less calories. And really, if you're trying to lose weight why waste your drinking with something that does nothing for you nutritionally?

My dentist also told me to stop drinking it because the acid attacks your teeth enamel.

Water is natural and good for you body. Once you've cut out the sodas for a few weeks you hardly notice it. Plus studies have shown that sugar-sweetened beverages (I know diet coke uses aspartame and not sugar) can lead to health problems:

People should cut down on sugar-sweetened beverages to prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes.

HFCS is horrible for people.. I know this is no scientific fact or anything, but does anyone find it odd that the majority of Europeans are slim and the majority of Americans are overweight?

Guess what? Europe has no High Fructose Corn Syrup!

Of course theres no proof (that I know of), that HFCS is the reason why the majority of Americans are overweight.

I'm pretty sure they don't even allow imported foods from USA that contain HFCS. Thought they have some similar products, like coca-cola for example. But their coca-cola has no HFCS in it, just sugar.

Diet soda is a slow acting time bomb. I do not care that it has 0 calories. Simple fact is - it contains very demaging to your body and general health chemical named ASPARTAME which is a well known agent to cose cancer. That is enough for me to stay away from diet coke. I suggest to everybody to Google information on this chemical and do your research. Also it never hurts to remember that "when it sounds to good to be true, it never is"

Not entirely true:) . I do not attribute the fact that Europieans are slimmer in general to the absence of High Fructose Corn Syrup.Take Italians, for example: their diet consists of mostly pasta and bread products, not to mention famous italian deserts and sweets(to die for!). I am from Europe and can tell you that Europians have entirely different relationship with food + we walk everywhere and we walk A LOT! In the USA people mostly drive from one point to another and intentional walking is considered here a form of exercise. The main difference, obvious to me is: Eropeans have all carbs for breakfast, also the biggest meal of the day is around 2p.m and a very light supper around 6-7p.m. You can not blame everything on poor Corn Syrup. I think it is a complexity of factors that contribute to Americans to be an overweight nation.

Hi, im a newcomer..... ive heard its even worst than regular soda.......sorry for asking but have you tried replacing it some juice or even water?

Research shows that diet soda gives your body an insuline spike and prevents the body from losing weight. There was a "diet coke vs orange juice" poll thing and both were as bad as each other in the results.

I cut myself off from diet a few weeks ago but to tell the truth, it hasn't really made a difference in my weight.

Water is just better for you. Why drink all the crap that is in soda? It is just such an empty thing to put in your body.

Hmm, some shocking facts that I never knew about diet soda, however, substituting it for juice drinks is iffy because many juice drinks contain high amounts of sugar which would effectively make the diet soda a better choice.

Also, personally I never got cravings from drinking soda, I was drinking it for a long time and I was still sensible as to only eat fast food on a weekend as a treat.

But I guess everyone is different when it comes to discipline.

But you also have to think about what is a more natural choice for your body. 100% Juice or Coke?

Squeezed oranges vs. HFCS and acid.

I'm just saying. It is, obviously, up to each individual to choose what they put in their body and how much. Is drinking some diet coke going to kill you? No. Is it really good for you? Maybe not but plenty of people have drank it their whole lives without too many ill effects. Then again, some people eat McDonalds 3-5 times a week and still seem "fine". Oh, who knows......

I don't know about weight issues from artificial sweeteners, contain a lot of artificial flavours and colours, so gulping it down like it was water may not be all that good for you.

I made a break with sweet things. I used to have a devilishly strong sweet tooth, but just getting away from the sugars and not having diet drinks to remind me of that super sweet flavour made me want it less.

Now I get pretty much all of my sweet tooth cravings satisfied with fruit.

Better yet I've stopped having what I think were sugar crashes during the day and feeling run down for no apparent reason. I'd always feel better after I got home and downed some chocolate or sweet fizzy drinks.

I have all but given up sodas. I might have the odd one, but pretty rarely. Instead, I drink water, green tea, fruit juice ... oh and er, um, a little beer and wine ;)

Years ago I had a diet pepsi habit, and I dare say that it didn't do me much good - especially my teeth. The thing is, I don't miss them at all these days! Tastes can be habit-formed, and habits can be taken control of. Its up to everyone what they drink, but personally for me, all sodas can go down the plug hole.

thanks for the advice....does that mean all of those diet water drinks...propel etc are worse for you than water too?

The nutritional director of a local hospital told me that there's not really enough bad stuff to do major damage, so if that's what it takes to get somebody to hydrate properly, the fact that they're properly hydrated far outweighs the bad stuff that's in those products. But, there are in fact 10 calories in them, and all of them count. Drink 5 of them a day, and that's 50 extra calories per day... something like, what, an extra 5 pounds of fat per year?

As for diet sodas, I do know that they are really bad on your kidneys, so I have no desire for them. I believe that it goes beyond that, but that's enough for me. Plus some artificial sweeteners are a possible carcinogen. Between the two... I think I'll pass.
