What's the score with Diet Coke? It's my only real vice atm.

250ml contains:

1kcal
Nil Sugar
Nil Fat
Nil Saturates
0.01g Salt

Ingrediants: Carbonated Water, Colour, Sweeteners (aspartame, acesulfame K), Flavourings, Phosphoric Acid, Citric Acid. Contains a source of Phenylalanine.

I can't find anything that is low in calories etc that tastes any good, so I wanna know if it's ok to drink Diet Coke as part of my weight / fat loss prog?

Cheers :)

Okay chemicals like aspartame, splenda the artifical flavourings cause you to have more cravings then you would without the stuff so instead of a weightloss you'll receive a weight gain. On the doctors show if you watched that show they say that people who drink that stuff weigh more then people who don't scary thought? try drinking unsweetened coffee with the french vanilla bean it has 5 calories per tsp. and it tastes great I have 3 cups a day or 3 tsps. a day and lots of water the stuff is wonderfull if you just don't like the stuff ad a squeeze of lemon in your water. But if you are serious about losing weight stay away- far far away from artifical sweetners they will doom you.(hope this helped sorry)

I got to disagree. I drink a ton of diet soda and yet, I have lost 30 pounds. Listen, If you like it, drink it. It's ok.

Not really bothered about cravings etc, I can manage them, just wondering about the ingrediants direct effect on the body ie, if it effects metabolism, blood sugar levels etc? :)

Debate over health issues

Wikinews has related news: Fizzy drinks out of New Zealand schools from 2009
The most commonly distributed version of Diet Coke (and majority of beverages using artificial sweeteners) relies on aspartame, which has been blamed by some scientists and medical professionals for possibly causing serious illnesses (such as cancer, brain tumors, brain lesions, and lymphoma) when consumed in large quantities[8][9]. Coca-Cola has now released Diet Coke sweetened with sucralose (also known as Splenda), although it is not as common. See also soft drink controversy and health concerns.

The sodium benzoate was found to break down mitochondrial DNA in living yeast cells.[10] Research published in 2007 for the British government's Food Standards Agency suggests that sodium benzoate (E211) is linked to hyperactive behavior and decreased intelligence in children. [11]

Recent studies conducted at Princeton University state that the artificial sweeteners, such as NutraSweet, that are present in Diet Coke are actually substantually more sweet than natural sugars, making your body crave sugar more, due to the absence of the natural sugar.[12]

I used to be a diet coke drinker loved the stuff until I got a got a cyst in my inner thigh went to a doctor got a perscription got better kept on drinking coke the cyst back didn't go back to the doctor quit drinking coke cold turkey cyst went away and never came back so really is it worth drinking this stuff?

..not this again..hold on..

Science trumps hype. Aspartame Toxiticity is RARE, not the norm, not by far. If you don't want it, fine, but I wish people would stop spreading things that the medical community doesn't agree with.

BTW: Cysts come and go. To assume that it was a direct relation to coke is post hoc ergo propter hoc. After it, therefore because of it. It means one thing follows the other, therefore it was caused by the other. It's not always true and it likely isn't true in your case.

I had a cyst but it's going away around the same time I started working again..do I make the same case?

Jerico your only saying this because you want to drink the stuff so go ahead drink it I don't care enjoy!!!

No, I agree with Jericho. While drinking diet isnt' the best idea, its certainly better than the other stuff. I've drank aspertame for years and I"ve NEVER had any kind of problems with it. To list those side effects...you might as well say to stay away from asprin...have you seen the side effects of asprin?? wow! But whats that?? Oh thats right, most people HAVE NOT experianced those side effects.

Well just for the record I can't use asprin.

I myself perfer to stay away from all chemicals I make my own soups and I precook my foods and freeze them for days I am to busy to cook I bake my own breads I just really dislike chemicals as they do cause alot of damage to the body, I used to be a very unhealthy 275lbs( and I am not saying that the 275lbs was what was the really unhealthy part but that I was always getting sick and I mean sick like at least evry other month and staying sick for periods on time then getting well and getting sick again)so I did alot of research on the chemicals that are being added to our foods and found out that are quite harmful for us to consume so I got rid of all those chemicals I have lost 100lbs(still working on the last 30) and I am very healthy I may get sick now once a year and when I do get sick now it is just a head cold nothing serious like it use to be so enjoy those chemicals if you really want them but you should do some research.

See, the difference is I am posting medical sites, you are saying you believe this is why you aren't sick. That's fine but if you put something up, especially without facts to back it up, I will dispute it if it is wrong. Even more so if it is designed to just scare people.

The Mayo clinic, the FDA, Cancer groups...they say it is ok. Nothing should be consumed in massive amounts but to say that it will cause all that is wrong.

If you noticed my links, I HAVE researched. It's just I'm willing to show my work. Where is yours?

Water > diet soda.

I drink a ton of diet soda and yet, I have lost 30 pounds.

Who knows how much more you could have lost without the diet soda? Just a thought ;)

OP: I'm personally against diet sodas for many reasons, one being the health effects of aspartame. On a short-term level I also find that they make me crave sweets.

But hey, if diet soda will help you lose weight, then do what you gotta do

I like diet soda and aspartame in my coffee. It's been used for decades and hasn't made anyone sick yet.

I actually had someone tell me a diet coke I was drinking was going to kill me while he was swilling a beer and smoking cigarette. We really like telling people that the stuff they like will hurt them, don't we?

The only reason i drink it is because I need some kind of drink when I have a smoke, cos I hate the taste, lol - Crazy I know... I will be tackling my smoking when i get back from my holiday in May, so hopefully the diet coke intake will decrease alot too, infact it will if I manage to quit smoking :) Thanks for the info guys, been most helpful!

I tend to drink unsweetened ice tea when I feel the need for a caffeinated beverage. It is a third alternative if you need a beverage! However, I don't think you need to cut out the diet soda to lose weight.

There are some studies that suggest not drinking any sweet drinks is better than drinking sweet drinks (fake or otherwise) and that only drinks with fat in them (like milk) "register" as providing calories in terms of filling you up - but no studies have been able to show an actual metabolic change from diet drinks.

My best theory is that it affects what you become accustomed to. My husband cut sweets out and suddenly he finds some foods too sweet, and finds that fruit tastes much sweeter than it used to. If you're drinking fake sugar drinks, you may still have more of a taste for the high calorie sweet foods and tend to indulge more often, or in higher quantity when you do. Of course, self control goes a long way toward countering that which is why there are plenty of people who've lost lots of weight while drinking diet sodas.

I lost all my weight while drinking 1-3 diet drinks a day over the course of quite a few years..and still do..not exactly something I'm proud of but yeah..if your diet is otherwise healthy, and you are not completely substituting it for water, then there's no real reason to worry.

I very much agree that no diet drinks would be healthier than any diet drinks..but people always need a scapegoat for why they can't lose weight or are unhealthy..super sweetners..carbs..dietary fat..yeah..those are the "real killers" aren't they. Aspartame does have a max recommended intake though, it's the equivalent of around 30 12oz sodas..so if you're really worried stop on your 20th or so (lol)

Anyways have you tried Diet Dr. Pepper..pretty awesome

Diet Cherry Dr Pepper is the best diet soda ever!

I was never a huge soda person, but when I just really want soda, I grab that.

Side question. Does anyone find that soda make you pee more often then drinking water or another beverage? It makes me go like crazy.

Caffeine is a diuretic (makes you pee more)
