Anyone else hear about that incident where the 28 year old mother died from drinking too much water on a morning radio show stunt?

Insane. I wonder how much you'd have to drink?

I'm still drinking as much as I can, but WOW. Guess there can be too much of a great thing.

it's not the first time it's happened - i've heard it used as a fraternity initiation stunt too - it's water - a person can't possibly get hurt - yeah right...

I heard about that...I can't imagine what her family must be going thru...and wasn't she doing it to try and win a game system for her kids? Geez, I can't imagine. I feel terrible for them:(

if you're sitting there chugging and chugging and chugging water, then it can be a problem. but for a normal adult, you can handle about 15 liters of water a day. Considering a gallon is less than 4 liters, I wouldn't let this deter you from trying to get your water intake up.

Too much of ANYTHING is bad for you..... water consumption should be between 6 and 10 average sized glasses of water per day depending on size. And a pint or so more if you workout regularly

they were drinking almost 2 gallons in a period of 1 or 2 hours...
I've drank a gallon of water in a day, and it was no problem... people drink a gallon of water a day for months... its no problem... if your doing it for weightlifting or for wrestling or what not... I'd say you can drink anywhere up to a gallon of water a day and still be safe... just don't binge like that lady did..

What a lousy reason to die! I can't believe that mom and the DJs sponsoring the darn contest could be so foolish. I feel really bad for the kids (and husband?) she left behind.

Drinking a gallon of water isn't a bad thing, we just need to pace our drinking rate and use the bathroom when the urge strikes.

Depends on what you call a sitting. 10 minutes or a couple of hours. A litre is roughly 33 fl oz. You should not just be drinking x amount of water in a day all at once. Water consumption should be spaced out throughout the day.

Champ, after about 2 weeks of consuming a good amount of water, the need for the bathroom will go down significantly.

They showed a whole thing on this 2 nights ago on NBC Nightly News...its horrible...I believe she had 3 kids and a husband. A caller even called in and said it was dangerous and the radio guy said "we know thats why they signed release forms so we're not liable." needless to say that 10 people from the radio station have been fired and there is still legal action being taken. The college hazing thing happened only 90 miles away so you know that they were aware of the dangers.

Wow! I hadn't heard about the radio stunt. That's unbelieveable! I have heard of people dying of too much water consumption though. It wouldn't happen to someone who was just drinking a reasonably normal amount of water, even more than a gallon, over the course of a day. But drinking largely excessive amounts, like in that stunt, and then peeing it all out in one shot would throw your electrolytes off bigtime... major cardiac disturbances. Did they say what the precise cause of death was? That's so sad... I hope the appropriate legal action is taken against that station.

i've heard of people taking extasy then drinking too much water. It makes their brain cells swell up and it's impossible to reverse once it's started. We learned about that in biology.

When I was in college I told my mom, a nurse, that I was drinking lots of water. She warned me not to drink too much at one time.

I guess she was right.

I am rethinking how much I am drinking now.... I am a guzzler & can down a good bit of water. Love the stuff...

But today I got a headache & wondered Did I drink too much water too fast?

haha I know I didn't but just couldn't stop the thought from crossing my mind.
