Sport Chocolate Milk after a Run

Sport Fitness
I recently heard that non-fat chocolate milk is good for you after a run--something about carbohydrates and protein.

As thrilled as I am for drinking chocolate milk, I prefer water after a run. But if it's good for me I think I'm willing to bite the bullet.

So is there any truth to this?

Stick with water...

You know i almost thought about giving a detailed report on why water over milk any day is best during exercise, However im lazy today so i do not care to...

I say go for it. During your run you need to keep taking in the water but afterwards I don't see why you shouldn't drink milk. The only downfall to chocolate milk I can think of is most brands use high fructose corn surup

Water over any fluid, period.

If you want to replenish your system there are better post run fuel sources than chocolate milk.

ive heard it said that chocolate milk contains a good ration of carbs, sugars and protein for muscle recovery.

however, it doesnt necessarily means its the best option you can find. i suppose the arguement stands that if you are going to drink it, do it post wo when you can burn up the calories and put them to good use.

I drink water before/during/after and take a diluted sports drink only after intense exercise.

I had a friend who drank milk after this one extreme workout and about an hour afterwards, he developed a kidney stone. The urologist theorized that it was caused by the fact that my friend drank a quart of milk after hard exercise. Before that I'd never heard of such an immediate-acting cause-effect between milk and kidney stones. Maybe if he only ever drank milk after exercising and made a habit of doing that, stones would form over time. I wonder if drinking milk right after exercise causes or can cause a new stone to form and form so quickly. I've never really looked into it, but I have avoided having milk after I exercise.

Of course water is essential and shouldnt be subsituted by any other fluid, Yes chocolate milkshake has been proven to be better than a number of other sport drinks.

chocolate milk

I do agree that water is the best choice over any drink. However i have heard from running camp that drinking chocolate milk after, not before or during, a workout or run helps with muscle recovery because of the protein and carbs. I don't know how true that is, but that's what they told us, and I sometimes drink some after workouts.

I dont know how much of a help this will be but I found a chocolate Milk that is good for whey protein shakes

It is called

Hood Calorie Countdown Chocolate Milk

Here is a link

They also have 2% and a FAT FREE milk which I am a fond user of only in cereal (it tastes really bad by itself)

Good luck Hope This H :pelps!

What about milk with pure cocoa powder, like with no added sugar. Wouldn't that be good? Dark chocolate in small doses is supposed to be healthy.

There is real evidence that supports chocolate milk as a recovery drink:

My brother-in law was a professor at IU (Notre Dame now) and knew the guy who did this study

I still stick with plain skim milk

Sounds more like people are trying to make a justified excuse to eat more sugar.

what ever works for you...

But if you just use 100% cocoa powder, you won't be adding any sugar at all. The point is to enhance the flavor. To some people, plain milk just isn't palatable. Sometimes, the only way they can get it down is if it has some chocolate in it.

Ah, okay I see. Thought you were talking about those chocolate powders like nesquik with added sugars and crap.
