Im doing a basic lowish calorie diet. I have around 10-13 grams of fat a day.I eat around 500 calories a day and am losing weight at a rate of about 1-2 lbs a week -sometimes i lose nothing at all, sometime i lose about 5 oz. How come i always lose weight slow? my sister had like 2000 + calories a day - going down from a whopping 3000 calories - and she ended up losing 1-2 lbs a week. though she didnt stick at it for long.

500 calories a day is extremely low...
what's your current height and weight..

please read the you don't have to starve topic in the on topic forum...

You're eating entirely too few calories - a healthy weight loss would be 10-12 calories per pound of body weight - which at 115 pounds, would put your calories at 1150-1380 a day.

What you're doing is dangerous and unhealthy.

Also, you're eating too little fat. Your fat intake should be around 35-40g per day I think

I'm on a low calorie diet. I'm eating 1100 calories per day, with around 30 ish grams of fat. I have bout 6-8 portions of fruit and veg too and if I burn over 100 calories in exercise then I eat more to compensate this :)

All good posts above. I don't know where you stand right now, weight-wise, but starve your body and you darn well better expect it to fight back against you.

What will it do?

Hold onto your weight.

What made you think that this caloric intake was okay and/or safe?

Fat intake too low? surely not!

Fat intake too low? somehow I can't see it! I was diagnosed with Gallstones in January and the hospital put me on a virtually fat free diet. The body does need some fats to break down vitamins in the body but it needs very little. Having a very low fat intake won't do you any harm whatsoever. However, eating 500 calories a day is a ridiculously low amount and will certainly put your body into starvation mode.

The body will tell itself that it is getting so little nutrition that it will store some of it as fat just in case it doesn’t get any in the near future.

A few years ago I went on a virtual starvation diet for about 5 months eating no more than 500 calories a day and thinking taking multi vitamin tablets would make up for the lack of nutrition. It worked great and I lost 8 stone. However I couldn't keep it up psychologically and as soon as I started eating more and more I piled the weight back on.

Im going to continue eating 400-500 calories a day. If i dont feel that hungry why eat more? Once i do get to my target weight of around 98 lbs, im going to do whatever it takes to maintain my figure. there absolutely no way that im going to let myself get fat again, no matter what it takes. i know loads of people that have gone on crash diets and water fasts and not put the weight back on. I'll bring the calories up very slowly to about 1,250 once im thin and i dont think theyll be any need to eat more then that. im sure i wont get fat again if im carefull. still got a long way to go though - 13 lbs to lose yet!! Its not that difficult though, im happy eating the amount i do. my clothes are already falling off me even though im fat.

And just how much fat do you suggest is sufficient and from what?

why do youo think you're fat at your current weight? How tall are you?

Just because lots of people have done it, doesn't make it a healthy way to go about doing things.

Please read aroound tht forum a little and understand the importance of good nutrition rather than a quick fix. You've got one body - and you're young you're going to need it a long time.. please take care of it

Good luck with that.

This is one of those post where you just want to write down all sorts of information to allow them to see the error in their ways. However, then you start writing only to realize it would make no difference in their "ignorant" beliefs...

Haha, I did the same exact thing, only to say to myself.... why bother.

Sorry, I just have a problem with misinformation being touted as the gospel. But I don't have to handle it in this fashion, of course. I will keep to myself. :)

Here are a couple good links outlining some of the dangers of eating a severely low calorie diet. You may find them interesting. Instead of believing what we few "forum people" are saying, maybe this will help.

In any case, ultimately it is your choice whether or not you want to push yourself into an eating disorder, which you ARE doing now by undernourishing your body. (if in fact you are only eating 500 calories a day as you say).

But my question to you is, why bother even coming here and asking for advice if you are just going to shoot it down immediately afterwards and spout off that you are not interested anyway?

Aren't you at all curious why your own sister, eating 2000+ calories a day was so much more successful than you eating 500? How does that make your method better?

In any case, good luck with your weight loss, but I would SERIOUSLY consider talking to a nutritionalist or doctor sooner than later about the possible damage you are causing yourself.

"I am ready for this challenge, success remember " reminder for me

That should tell you something.

Better yet, if consuming " 400-500 calories a day " is " not that difficult " why haven't you cut it back further and by only consuming 200 calories a day ?

CRAP that is low! 200 to 500 is in fact starving yourself, I would seriously re-evaluate your thoughts, and ask Steve and Wrangell on some good advice (they are knowledgeable) and you may just be suprised in getting some recomendations. Now, if you think you already know, and you DONT want to take advice, then YOU HAVE GIVEN YOURSELF NO CHOICE BUT TO ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES OF the action you have taken. And, then no one to blame BUT YOURSELF. With all due respect, this ISNT A BRIGHT APPROACH.

Good luck with that.

Sums up my thoughts on this :D

If you want some actual incentive to eat right, take a look at curvie girls(sp?) log/photos. Keep some muscle there to cut back to and to show some tone...
I'm on 2500kcal almost, and I'm losing 1.5lbs a week, and mostly fat at that, yours WILL be a bad fat/muscle loss ratio.

But seriously, some stick figure at work won't know as much as a doctor, people who have done studies on these things, and see people suffer extreme problems from these diets.

I'm sure low calorie diets can also affect a womans Menstral cycle/fertility (Anyone confirm this?)
