While I still drink too much soda pop (drinking any is too much, and I still drink it a few times a week), I am so much better off now than when I was drinking it several times a day. It always made me feel horribly bloated after having a lot of it at lunch and seemed to be almost entirely responsible for the acid reflux problems I used to have. But it always tasted so good and, more importantly, I couldn't imagine not getting my caffeine. (I'm not a coffee drinker.) So, I eventually switched to green tea. At first it was tough, since I hated the taste, but I eventually got to the point that didn't mind it. And with some lemon juice, I think it's quite good.
Green tea doesn't contain nearly as much caffeine as coffee, but when you have several glasses, it contains enough to meet one's requirements. (Or mine, at least.) On the upside, it's pretty hard to OD on caffeine via green tea. And with tea, I get my caffeine with almost no calories and with no artificial sweeteners or flavors. Supposedly, the healthy molecule ECGC in green tea mitigates the harmful effects of caffeine on the body while still giving you that enjoyable caffeine effect. Green tea might not be everyone's cup of, um, tea, but I think it is easily the healthiest source of caffeine one can choose.
One caveat: prepared green tea mixed with HFCS is of course not what I'm talking about. If I'm gonna be unhealthy, I might as well just drink a Dr. Pepper rather than fool myself into thinking I'm drinking something healthy.
