Bookworm's Ascent

Yesterday

B: the usual
workout: warm up run (15 mins) followed by spin class (50 mins)
HRM said I burned 636 cals - my HR was flying and it was pretty awesome. Avg 80%, max was over 90%. When I get my HR up there I think about training my body to keep going with less oxygen - such as will be the case on the big mountain climb!
PWO: protein shake
L: pasta & turkey & veg
S: kashi granola bar
S: cheese & crackers
D: chicken & veg
cals were around 1600.

I bought new jeans yesterday, and have officially dropped another size. I have been watching the scale s-l-o-w-l-y head in the direction I want it to over the past few weeks, but have noticed as all my jeans have started falling off my ass (again), and decided it was time to invest in a new pair. So that was fun! I think I'm going to try to get my BF measured soon. I'm trying to be less obsessive about the number on the scale and think more about measurements and body composition. To be honest, since I lost weight over the past year, I often feel worse about myself than I did before. I was never obese, and always was pretty confident and felt that I was cute, even if I was overweight, but now that I have realized how I can change things, every flaw just seems so much more THERE and noticeable and ... ish. But I'm slowly getting better. Silly things like trying on cute new jeans helps.

Today - just had my usual breakfast and I think I'm going to go for a light jog to burn a few cals and stay loose. I'm still fighting off a bit of a cold, so I was debating if i should take a full on rest day. I think I can try to sweat out a few germs without taxing my body too much...

Doesnt it feel GREAT you dropped a full size and have to buy new cloths!

YES IT DOES!..........FEEL GOOD!

YOU FLAT ROCK!

Lost another 1/2 lb. My weekend was rather indulgent (I am hereby officially noting this is a recurring theme in my diary and I should remedy), but this is good. Friday I lifted, Sat. went for a run and incorporated some sprints/high intensity work, Sunday was rest.

Today
B: usual
workout: warm up jog & spin class, 590 cals burned, again hit a max HR of 95%
PWO: protein shake, apple, milk
L: tuna & veg w/low fat mayo on whole wheat pita
S: raspberries & handful of almonds
S: mozz cheese stick
D: i think i'm in the mood for some steak & veg...

B: usual
workout: did single leg work today for lower body - bulgarian split squats, single leg hamstring curls, and another leg exercise for which I do not have a name. Also did some back work and rows, and abs.
PWO: protein shake
L: leftover steak & zucchini from dinner last night, w/a little cheese
S: kashi granola bar
S: apple and I totally had a peanut butter mini-binge. just one serving, all natural PB, but not sure how that is going to affect my fat intake for the day.
D: ??

Bookworm - your progress so far and your goals are so impressive! The trip you have planned for Africa sounds amazing - I would love to do that some day, but I have a trip to China on the agenda first.

I have a question for you about the soccer. I played in high school, but I haven't played since then so my skills are gone (totally gone). Did you quit playing and pick it back up or have you been playing continuously? I'm wondering how long it's going to take for me to get my skills back.

Thanks so much jia-ren!

I also stopped playing soccer after high school, and only played pick-up every now and again until about 8 years later, when I moved back to my home town only to discover that most of my close friends had moved away or I'd lost touch... so I was trying to find a good way to meet new people and looked for some local adult rec sports leagues. I found a soccer league that allowed me to sign up as an independent, and ended up on a team that stuck together for a few years. My first game back I was horrible! I seriously tripped over nothing at one point, right in front of my new teammates. But it really didn't take long for the skills to return, and through it I have met a ton of great people, joined a couple different times, and of course, it has helped me get in/stay in shape. I highly recommend getting back into it if you can!

As for the rest of my week and filling in this diary... I have been good about my workouts (which is usually not a problem for me) and I have also been on track with my eating, for the most part. I haven't been logging this week because I have been working hard preparing for a final trial I have on Monday for a class. Which is what I am about to get back to after perusing a bit more of the forum!

Back to it...

Thanksgiving weekend with family in town and fun stuff around made for no logging and poor eating. I did get some good workouts in, including a 90 minute post-T-day endurance spin class. It was taught by an instructor who I have never taken a class from before, and I definitely need to stalk him on the class schedule. Intense and fun! Today I did my usual Monday morning spin and felt like I hit a bit of a wall - I'm going to blame my poor eating and try to get back on track.

Today's meals:
B - oatmeal w/banana, natty PB, milk, coffee
L - tuna w/mustard, tomato, cucumber, avocado, on whole wheat pita
S - clementine
D will be turkey burger w/veggies, maybe a little cottage cheese

Quick update on last two days...
Workouts -
Yesterday a light run, my legs were feeling tight.
Today lower body weight training - squats, lunges, single leg hamstring curls, calf raises.

Food the past two days has been good calorie wise, but I'm slacking on protein. I got a chance to cook a healthy chicken, zucchini, mushroom and onion stir fry tonight that I hope will last a few good meals.

Got to start studying for finals, coming soon. Bought my plane ticket for Africa today, though, and that was way more exciting/distracting/motivating than anything else!!! :)

Yikes, I've been terrible about keeping up my diary... Here's a summary, and after exams I'll be more detailed and diligent with it.

Weight: maintaining
Exercise: good - I'm switching back to full body workouts for weights, because I decided the splits were not working for me. I always make time for my workouts during finals because it keeps me mentally fresh.
Food: meh. Not going to make excuses for my bad eating.
Overall: life is good, just focusing my energies to finishing my degree requirements - 5 more days!!!

Well considering all the stress you're under you can cut yourself some slack in other areas of your life, with the proviso that you'll pick them up once your degree is done. Keep up the good work.
