best vacation ever

Ok - so it's been about 4 years since i've had a real vacation - more than a year since i had more than 2 days in a row off and had my blackberry turned off - so my brain is fried and needs to recall a vacation...

tell your best vacation story.. where'd ya go - what'd ya do - who'd ya go with? blah blah - give us some good stories.

My best vacation ever was when I went with my two closest friends, Tom and Kip, on Kips incredibly 95 foot sailboat (I loved the story behind this boat -he bought it at a government auction for an incredibly cheap price, and spent 5 years fixing it up by hand.. this trip was it's maiden voyage)

We left the harbor in norwalk connecticut and sailed to myrtle beach - or somewhere near there and played a round or two of golf - I actually shot under 90 and haven't shot that since.. we got back ont he boat and sailed further down to the islands... I think the entire trip down took us about 12 days (and we flew home).. we never lost sightof land the entire time but it was so incredible.. really good friends, relaxation, good beer and wine, good conversation, no mutinies, no walkig of the plank - just an incredible trip.

Second best was 10 days in tahiti - it was a club med resort we stayed at and I'd never do that again - way to summer camp and let's join everything - but it was Tom and me -and our ability to make fun of other people doing the ridiculous stuff made the trip great... the water in tahiti is an amazing color - the diving was superb... just a beautiful place to visit and a great trip...

Ok, Hawaii last year or Michigan...

Hawaii was just gorgeous and so many neat things (like lava hike and zip line).
See pics here

Michigan, Leelanau penninsula, so peaceful, great food and friends, just a wonderful spot
See pics here

*sighs*

vacation????? I have heard of those things before but I don't think I have been on one of those since I was 11 years old and that was to Disney World. That of course was way cool(remember I was 11!!) I would like to be able to take a vacation one of these days(preferably soon!) someplace warm!! Give me some good ideas of places to visit!!

when i was young free and single i used to take a lot of holidays, never seem to have much money these days:( . spent a year in oz on a "working holiday". such a great country. spent 6 months in sydney, mainly working, taking short trips and getting drunk. then we travelled around nsw, south australia, victoria and the northern territories.
i also spent a couple of months in india backpacking. it was a real eye opener and one i will never forget. coming out of the airport with the heat, "smells" and poverty was a real shock. some of the highlights were dharamsala (the home of the dalai llama and tibetan refugees), beautiful kashmir ( but what a terrible journey) and of course the taj mahal.
more recently i have had a trip to new york, which was fab and one which i hope to repeat when i can save up the airfare. nearer to home we went to the lake district/ morecambe. the views of morecambe bay and the lakes and the sunsets are out of this world, but the tides are treacherous. a few years ago some illegal immigrants(employed by some unscrupulous person for an appalling wage) were picking cockles and the tide came in behind them, killing a number. the terrible thing was one of them tried to make a 999 call which they broadcast on tv.

dear slimby 43. U r right. The infrastucture here sucks. Please visit again. Things are much better now. & also there is more to india than the Taj Mahal. Also the "poverty" is contrived. By design all the poor people/beggars congregate near tourist spots hassling the tourists. If you go the residential areas u'll be amazed! India is a land of disparity. There are the very rich & the very poor. The middle class strata is sadly lacking.
According the most recent survey conducted by somebody or the other, we have the largest number fo billionaires in Asia. Even ahead of the japanese.
Most importantly-did u like the Food?

rashmi, i hope i didnt give the wrong impression from my post. i loved india, but it was a bit of a shock to the system initially - i am aware of the "disparity", but also things like the heat, different spicey smells etc. i had an amazing time and found everyone to be so friendly. the main problem for my was the "bureauocracy"(which im told is a legacy from the english). even trying to buy a train ticket was a complicated and long winded procedure.
i cant say which was my favourite place, i have good memories from most. because of the vastness of the country we didnt get to as many places as i would have liked. we travelled around the delhi area, jammu and kashmir, up to dharamsala and around(?himachel pradesh) and rajesthan.
i would go back like a shot - in fact i spent a couple of weeks there on my own on the way over to oz. but i haven`t got much money now, 2 kids etc. when the children are older i would love to take them with me.
i loved the food and in general was so cheap and tasty. i noticed that there is a huge difference between indian food in india and the possibly more "westernised" versions that they serve over here. i liked the pea and cheese curries, rogan josh and dhal. i also liked the indian "chai". whats the name of that tea - i think i had it in kashmir, with spices in it? slim

dear Slimby43. I'm glad u enjoyed your visit. The next time u plan a trip to india, try sept/oct. The best months. Come to Bangalore. I'll show u around. u'll love it. It is just that there is more to india than the exotic & the mystic. On a visit to germany i was asked whether elephants roamed the streets!!!!!
The only elephant on my street is me!

P.S- the smells are quite overwhelming.

rashmi, ta for your offer, one of these days..if im right bangalore is in the south?? its funny how some people who have never been to a country have stereotyped ideas about it, though saying that i did have a ride on an elephant (touristy i know) up to the amber palace.
i originally come from wales and ive found on my travels that many people have not even heard of it. quite a few that have, either believe it to be part of england or somewhere else totally. slim

Best ever? Cyprus. it was our first ever holiday abroad, which probably made it so special. My parents never traveled abroad, but my wife had been all over the Globe. I just felt that something was going to go wrong before I got the chance to make the holiday. I was waking up with panic attacks before the holiday - I was suffering from terrible indigestion and sleep apnea, and was convinced that I was going to croak before I had a chance to dive into the blue waters of the Mediterranian .... and then nothing went wrong. Ok, it was incredibly hot, and our apartment had no air conditioning, there were roaches, mossies, the er... toilets - it was perfect! :) And I did dive into that blue water, from the plank of a fun pirate ship, in a lagoon, from a turtle beach, etc.

Next best holidays? We had a very expensive fortnight in Orlando a few years ago - I'm still paying for that one ;) Then there was this cheapo holiday in Portugal. We booked everything ourselves via the Internet, and stayed in a off the tourist track area south of Lisbon - a great adventure.

Hi Slimby43! Wales eh? I recently had welsh rarebit & cawl. YUMMY!!!!!!
I work at a hotel management institute & we had welsh food as a part of the world cuisine.
Also I’ve read quite a bit about wales from the historical romance novels I used to read. (Actually, I still do). Why is it that most of these books are set in wales or Scotland?:)

hi i think that welsh rarebit is a posh form of cheese on toast - yummy, but cawl - wn i ddim - i dont know. i think the reason many historical romance novels are set in wales, scotland and cornwall (think poldark - my favourite) is because the scenery is so beautiful - wild and "rugged", but also lonely and can be treacherous. a lot of films are made in these place too -2 that come to mind are the dark (the sean bean version set in wales) and the eye of a needle (scotland). slim

well most of mine were memorable :D justany part of croatian coast i've been to since i was 15 (hitchhiking with friends) lol-something i would never do now hehe but those were different times- my entire summer is one big holiday even if i'm working...at least the weekends, going to the beaches an stuff
i've been all over from spain, france to turkey and i have to say that my favorite place in the world so far is Istanbul, Turkey. that place...so many beautiful memories. it was summer school first time and second i was invited as guest speeker, held workshop on prejudice and stereotypes...i've been there for a month and if someone told me to move there i would in a split second.
i still think of istanbul as my "safe place" i think of it whenever i'm really upset. the people, the place, the smells...everything...i just felt at home...more than i feel at my own home. strange :D
if i had money i would travel all the time. its in my genes lol :D i become depressed when i don't go somewhere in a month even if its just an hour away lol

Best one for me was last summer, when Marlene and I went up the coast of northern California and southern Oregon for 3 weeks. Every morning I went out for a couple of hours doing photography, and she painted the scenes with watercolors. We spent the rest of the days looking through the small towns, driving to new places, and just relaxing. The ocean there is just incredibly beautiful.

Hmmm.. I can list all the places I've been... Hawaii in February was the BEST I believe.

New Orleans & Nashville (Sept 2001)
Orlando, FL 2 times, once during a hurricane--had lots of R&R w/no electricity and dusk curfews-- surprised I didn't bring back a surprise for 9 mos later (April 2006/Sept 2004 maybe)
Las Vegas, NV & Anaheim, CA (in the middle of the freaking summer when it was 118 degrees in Vegas and we had to wait an hour outside for our rental car)
Myrtle Beach (It's been years since I went there)
Virginia Beach (Been a while here too)
Niagra Falls (summer 1995?)
Akron, OH --was great visiting relatives (summer 1995)
Atlantic City, NJ (twice) (May 2004, Dec 2006)
Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg, TN (Numerous Numerous times)
Boone, NC (Mar 2007)
Hawaii & Kauai (1 week on each)
Williamsburg VA this used to be where we went every year for our anniversary..we did something different last year though.. can't remember what.

Next Feb we are heading out on a Disney Cruise with 11 other family members. I am trying to plan for a vacation in New England this fall--I really wanted Maine or Rhode Island, but not sure if that'll happen. I want to go to Ireland when I graduate with my bachelors degree.. so maybe I can make that happen. I also want to go to Bermuda.. but definitely not during the hot season.

Still need to hit
TeXas
Colorado
Washington
Utah
Wyoming
and many many more places.
