anyone believe aliens have visited earth?

There is likely millions of civilisations out there and equally likely that none has ever come in contact with another. The universe is just too big.

Ditto. I think the only way we can travel huge distances is through holes in space. If we could figure out how to link them up, we could be going trilions of miles in a second.

Proteinboy, your theory about humans watching us from future, or another being who is living on this planet more intelligent than us got me thinking back to something I thought about a long time ago.

We humans, have only been intelligent for around 10000 years. Dinosaurs were around hundreds of times more than that number. So, theoretically, they could have evolved millions of years ahead of us, faked the meteor, planted the fossils, and left this planet, or even have created us. Theories on this kind of topic are endless.

the first time i heard that and i hope its the last

The universe is massive, it just makes more sense that there is some form of life on some other planet out there somewhere.

I have no idea whether or not they have come here for several reasons....

*why do we always assume they are so much more advanced than us and even have the ability to?

*If they do have the ability, then they probably would for exploration/research/curiosity purposes - even if we do think we suck or whatever.

*the "style" of the space crafts do seem to change with current trends (hmmmm...)

*there is an awful lot that we cannot explain or prove with our almighty science

*not everyone who claims to have had an experience is an ignorant redneck

So, I believe they are "out there", and have mixed feelings on whether or not they've come here.

Also guys, some more points:

While there obviously are older civilisations than us, if they exist, how do we know that we, as humans aren't developing abnormally fast, or slow?
Why do we always presume if we came into contact with aliens they would mean us harm? Isn't that just a very human way of thinking?
We could all be pictured as an Age of Empires game. Lots of civilisations developing, some already in contact with each other. Then we catch up and get involved with them in a few million years.
Although we most likely wouldn't be the most advanced race, I seriously doubt we are the dumbest. Probably in the middle, I mean, on earth alone we are the smartest. Unless those dolphins are just pulling one on us ;)

:D I can see it now - the rise of the dolphin

Although humans have some seriously stupid qualities (w/ all the violence and whatnot) - I do believe we aren't that bad or slow or whatever. wood has a good point, we are the smartest on earth, so why put ourselves down?

Look at where we are and what we know compared to where we started. We have come a very long way in a relatively short amount of time. It's even more astounding to think of the advancements we have made in the last two centuries alone. So, while we may not be the best of the best of the universe, I don't think we are the dumb wierd kid sitting in the back of the class picking his nose either.

deschain;191814we are the smartest on earth, so why put ourselves down?

we are so smart that we are the only ones actually destroying the earth. we wont even be here to make more technological advances if we continue developing like this.
we are destroying where we live and just because our lives would be girastically changed, we refuse to stop destroying our planet.

and now that we are so heavily reliant on using fossil fuels and not caring about nature enough to leave it alone, those 'great inventions' will very likely mean the end of us because we refuse to change.

I see where your coming from. But our flaws are linked to greed. We have advanced more in 200 years than ever before. Certain civilisations such as the Greeks etc before us, all had to make certain sacrifices. I believe that eventually we will be able to stop the damage we have created by harnessing the suns energy.

Protein, we are the smartest on earth. Why are we destroying our planet and animals aren't? Because we can. Sad but true.

I believe the time machine to be an impossible invention. For a TimeMachine to work it would mean that there is an infinite number alternate reality/timeliness that run along side without ever crossing. That would mean for each and every second a entirely different world on a different time line would exist.

I highly doubt this to be possible...Even if it was there would be no way to "dial" in what time you wanted. Sure you could input 1776(you know what happened that day) However, you must remember this is simply an arbitrary number. Not an actual physical presence. So with that in mind i do not see it possible for such a contraption to exist.

Then if a way was found to "Dial" in where (i should say when) you wanted to go. That would mean things would would repeat as history says. EXACTLY, however if this is the case it would mean freewill/choice does not exist. Because everything in the past would be predetermined...

I forgot to add, even if we did all that. And did "make" a time machine and find how to "Dial" in a time to visit. We have to remember that it would not affect our present.

We are on a timeline, the past down to the second is on a completely different time line. These do not cross or intertwine for a reason. If you went back in time it would be because you somehow entered a different time line. And what you do in that time line will only affect that timeliness future. Not the time line you originated from...

Meaning if say today i jumped into my time machine and prevented the Kennedy assassination. When i came back to my originating timeline things would still be as they were. Kennedy would still have been shot.

So with this in mind there is no point to it. Beyond simply seeing how things unfolded. We would not be able to affect our present.
Of course, if this is all possible and true it would be freewill DOES NOT exist and that all things are predetermined...

It would be more probable to accept that infinite universes exist, and therefore, every probability exists. A time machine in this sense would be like a picture viewer in which we do not use it to change anything, but to witness the events of that particular set of probabilities. Infinite variables with infinite outcomes for any single event. I think that makes it much more exciting than actually creating a time machine to change things.

Lei. 3k congrats. Would you really want to go into the future though? I understand the past, but seeing the future might ruin the fun for you to a certain extent.

me and my brother were arguing this:

he said "if there were a thousand monkeys typing randomly at 1000 computers, for an INFINITLY long time, one of them would eventually recreate the play "Hamlet" by shakespeare(sp?) to the very period with no errors.

i refused to believe this because i dont ever think a monkey would be able to ever recreate such a dramatic, ingenious, legendary play by dumb luck. i dont care if it is infinite time. the spaces in the wo r d s wo ul d hav e t o be perfe ct and the letters would have to be perfect too. i see it as impossible

what do you guys think?

It is not impossible. Think about it. Although the monkeys would have to hit the exact keys, and avoid the backspace, they are not thinking. It is dumb luck. The odds would be something like 1 in 1,000,000,000,000,000 to the power of twenty million times that number, but the fact is that it is INFINITE. That means forever and ever. Never stopping. Eventually the odds of getting it will be surpassed by the years, multi trillions of times. It never stops. Of course it's possible. Heck it would happen an infinite amount of times.

OH ****

I'm a spammer now...hahahahhhaha

I'm actually not a big future guy. I used to be, but now I'm more like an "alternate versions of me" guy. How badass would it be to go to other realities and kick your own ass? There's no better sparring partner and no better training partner than essentially the same person as yourself. All your weaknesses become apparent and all your strengths become nothing.

And as for the 1000 monkeys typing as the limit approaches infinity...

It would happen. Infinity is a long ****ing time. The only thing that would affect it would be the learning curve of the monkeys. Some monkeys would develop neural pathways that would lead them to type a sequence more often than they would something else...but that's not really the point. If you COULD have something be 100% totally and perfectly random, you would eventually get something like that, if you let it go to infinity. Infinity doesn't just mean "a long time"...infinity means forever.

I really hope not...the concept was cooler to think about than it was to watch the movie.

Hahahha

Haha, yeah true!
