:hurray::hurray:I came across this website while I was mindlessly searching around for any more tips I could use to work smarter while I am on my weight loss goal. After reading through many of the pages on this site, I am astounded at the sense of communal support everybody gives each other. It really is a positive place to let down your guard and share fears about the difficult topic of weight

Since this is my first post in my WL diary, I should document where I am at. After I finished school, I was physically a wreck. Way too many all nighters fueled by cheap energy drinks and unhealthy fast food. Between the constant push and pull of a hectic schedule, I really did not put much emphasis on a healthy lifestyle. I finally got serious about my eating habits, and started looking up some ideas for how to eat a more balanced diet. 1 week ago, my roomate dragged me to his gym to try it out. In retrospect, I was pretty afraid of drawing unnessecary attention to myself, and it actually kept me out of the gym for way too long. However, after that trip, I realized how good it felt to work the body, and it really hit home that I was WAY out of shape, and had let the charade go on too long.

Since last week was my first real week, I wanted to start with some good habits. Initially, I was worried that early workouts would leave me worn out the rest of the day, however I have found that waking up early and hitting the gym is actually a fantastic energy booster! :hurray: From some of the information I've sucked up around the net, i've been starting slow with some quick stretches then a few mins of cardio to warm up. Then I hit a muscle group with 3 sets of 10 reps. Afterwards, I finish up with 10-15 mins of cardio, depending on how much time I have. Seems pretty simple, but Im already seeing results, so thats exciting! :cheers2:

I used to be a junk food junkie, and looking back on it now, its hard to see what I was thinking when I mindlessly went through 3-4 slices of pizza or a bag of chips. I've started eating 5-6 smaller meals/snacks a day, because I HATEHATEHATE feeling hungry! Essentially, I start each day with a whey protein shake with skim milk after I get home with a boiled egg and a banana or apple. lunches is usually tuna with a cheese stick, and dinner is generally a chicken breast. Im a little worried about not getting enough veggies, because I usually only eat them with every other dinner. From what im reading from you guys, it seems like balance is key to a diet, not focusing on the calorie deficet.

I'm pretty excitied to be part of this community, and I'm eager to see other people's success through the people on this board!

Congrats on starting the fight! Keep up the good work and you will see results in no time! Also, drink lots and lots of water... if you can get down at 2 quarts, you are definately doing yourself a favor.... you will notice a difference, I promise!!

hey!! good to see u on here... this forum is terrific and it really makes a difference. so im going to pass on what i got from here.. all the support and the encouragement :)
so if u need a chit chat buddy :p im here! and i'll keep dropping by to see how ur doing, so keep updating!

Banshee - Thanks for the advice! I totally forgot to mention it, but for the past ~2 months ive made it a focus to try and finish a gallon of water while im at work. Ive been using some water flavors with no added sugar to help make the water consumption more interesting, and it helps BIG time. :p

Surya - Thanks for the support! I think having buddies, and more importantly someone to talk with takes makes losing some weight a lot easier!

Today was a pretty good day. I was up pretty last night, so I missed my morning workout :cuss: But, I still started off with a protein shake, an egg, and a banana, and that felt pretty good and balanced. Esentially grazed all day on my boiled eggs, cheese sticks, and turkey sandwiches on whole WHEAT! Dinner was awesome, and pretty simple. Had a tuna melt with some steamed veggies and a yogurt. Afterwards, I hung out and watched some TV with a few strawberries for dessert! Pretty good stuff!

I need to make it a priority to figure out some alternate ways to prepare chicken and fish, because although I'm really enjoying the food now, I don't wanna burn out on it. So, maybe this weekend I'll scour the web for some decent recipes.

I was really excited to start my journal, that I missed the sticky at the beginning, so heeeeere goes.

-- How much weight do you want to lose?

Eventually im looking to lose ~120 pounds. I think 220 would be a realistic goal. Although it would put me over the BMI goal, it would be a much more healthy weight to start evaluating again.

-- What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight?

Due to the amount of weight I need to lose, im choosing the slow and steady route, and estimating 18-24 months. (hopefully!)

-- How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)?

From the wealth of knowledge i've seen from the posters here, I have decided on a much more REALISTIC and BALANCED diet combined with a steady (5-6) day regiment of cardio/strength training) to help me hit my goal. Although I've only been going for 2 weeks, I can PROUDLY say that I do not miss my old lifestyle, and I could see this being a change for the better.

-- Who or what can support you in reaching your goal?

All my roomates are incredibly supportive, because they all are frequent gym visitors as well. My parents have always been enthusiatic about helping in any way they could, be it advice, or something simple, like cooking healthier. Lastly, I'm sure I can rely on the support of the fellow posters on this forum, seems like a great bunch of people!

-- How realistic is your goal?

Its hard to be objective about this, but I feel as though I have given myself enough time to safely hit my goal, without serious concern for yoyoing back.

-- When will you start?

2 weeks ago :coolgleamA:

At what weight would you like to be at four months from now?

This is a tough one. I think due to my BMI, it would be safe to say that the majority of weight lost is going to be body fat, so an aggressive goal would be to be around 300 by late october (In time for halloween!)

Why do you want to lose weight?

This is a pretty loaded question, but I almost feel like I am sick of letting this condition control SO MUCH of what I do. I despise being winded and not having the energy to do simple athletics, and its a horrible cycle that I do not want to be part of anymore. My eating was completly irresponsible and reckless, and its time to make it a priority to take care of myself.

Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event?

For life.

What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals?

The only obstacles I have is my motivation. However, I think I have my roomates to help me push me in the right direction if they see me fall off the horse. They are all very close friends, who only want to see what is best for me, and im pretty blessed to know them all.

What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight?

Well, I used to be very sedentary. I used to sit in my desk at work for 8 hours, and then come home and play video games for a few hours. Pretty mindless eating the entire time. However, ive really made an effort to stop that behavior, and its becoming much easier to take a walk, or just go out and be social.

Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight?

Not really, I've never really made it a priority to be healthy. I mean, I tested a few fad diets for a bit, but as with all diets, I succumbed to temptation within weeks, and failed.

Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time?

Thats what I intend to do with this journal, and find out new ways to prepare the healthy foods we all like!

Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook?

I try and cook all the time, but my culinary experience is certianly lacking :p

TIPS PLZ!

How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go?

Weekends only these days, and all over the place. Not picky eaters here

What are your three favorite foods?

I love fish! Im glad its healthy. Im also like some good alfredo pasta, but I haven't had any since a birthday dinner. Lastly, I think turkey is a great meat, and its my fav meat to munch on for lunch.

What are your three favorite restaurants?

Toughie. Off the top of my head, I would pick

1: Pei wei
2: Bamboo Club
3: Carolinas (local mexican food, excellent!)

If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different?

Wow, I'm not sure. I'd likely stare in the mirror for a bit to make sure I wasn't dreaming haha. But, its not all about the end result, I think as I can see the change happening, confidence will likely follow. This is one of the main reasons for my weight control, to help build my self confidence.

Do you eat when you are not hungry?

No, on that note, when I do feel like eating, I always deliberate whether I'm actually hungry, or just bored.

Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)? Occasionally, I am def part of the clean plate club. But, I have really tried to make portions that are reasonable, and take a few breaths after eating what I have to see if I am full. If I am still hungry, I will go get some more food.

Do you hide your food or eat in secret?

Nah, we use 1 fridge.

Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed? I admit that in the past I have eaten while stressed. In fact, that was my college life. Eat study eat study :O But ive made strides to fix that.

Do you eat as a reward?

I used to make excuses and eat non healthy foods for BS rewards developed in my head. I finally finished that paper, so I deserve some burritos ect ect. Not to say I still can't enjoy these foods, but moderation is the key.

Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer?

Guilty as charged. Unless I am eating with other people, I am usually relaxing in from the TV with my dinner.

What type of snacks do you eat?

Some pickup snacks ive been messing around with are cheese sticks, various fruits, carrot sticks, boiled eggs. Id be open to more suggestions if you know any!

In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing?

Gym in the mornings. It truly sets a tone for the rest of the day.

Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home?

It is a public gym 2 mins from my house. In the morning, it is nice and quiet there, and the mornings have been beautiful. So it makes getting up easier :p

What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise?

Elliptical recently is my favorite. Its a great full body cardio workout, and leaves me sweating good! A close second is hitting the weight machines, and pumping some iron. I like the burn that you feel, because its a reminder that I am putting effort into this body. I love to swim as well, but I have been pretty pool shy for the past few years. This is a goal of mine!

What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals?

May sound strange, but I have a closet full of old clothes that I would LOVE to be able to wear again. This is one of the first things that come to mind. But I want to be able to run short distances without sweating or heaving for breath. I just want to start taking care of myself, so I can do more. Maybe take a spontanous hiking trail on a nearby mountain, or bike on a forrest trail in Northern AZ. Who knows, but fitness is gonna start with decisions. Thats why I am here!

Hi Andy :)

Just spotted you asking for cooking tips.. A few years ago when I was ~25 years old I couldn't cook a thing. Oven chips were about the pinnacle of my skills! But over the last 5 years or so I've tought myself so many tasty usually healthy dishes that I know LOVE cooking and spend about 3 hours in the kitchen every night!! It was a gradual thing but a journey I heartily recommend for the non cook :D My meals for the masses nights where I get friends round are now very popular!!!

I think one of the main things that got me into cooking were tasty stir fry's, yum. Easy to make and then you can go from there into making nice curries etc.. if you like that sort of thing. Anyway I lost a fair bit of weight last year by basically having this prawn stir fry several nights a week, the calorie count on it must be very low, and I found I could have a massive portion to make me feel full but it didn't feel too heavy on the stomach / stodgy.
Anyway the recipe is here:
BBC - Food - Recipes - Spicy prawn stir-fry
I experimented loads with the content, and hardly ever used the veg listed here.. I prefered chunky veg like mini corn on the cob / mini courgettes, peppers etc.... The main thing I took for it was the creation of the sauce with the chinese cooking wine, soy sauce, and thai sweet chilli sauce. By using that + whatever veg I wanted + prawn I could make a delicious stir fry every time :D Nowadays I've moved onto all sorts of other stuff but the good old spicy prawn stir fry did the business for me for ages :)
Also the BBC recipe site in general (BBC - Food - Recipes) is really good for loads of healthy recipes, I use it almost daily!!

So thought I'd share that, apologies if its long winded, if you want any ideas for some healthy grub from someone else who is no culinary expert (although getting there) then give me a shout :)

Also I hear you on veggies!!! I don't have them enough in my diet, should probably replace some of the masses of fruit with veg, one thing at a time eh!

Best of luck with the challenge mate, I'm sure you'll get there, especially with help and motivation from all the excellent people in this community, WOO!

Cheers
Pep

Thanks for the recipe Pep!

I just finished reading the link on how to make it, and it sounds pretty awesome! I think I'll attempt to secure myself a decent wok and get to business sometime this weekend :D I'm always open to some new ways to prepare food, even though my recent cooking skills curbs at hard boiling eggs :p

No Problem :D

I also found this very useful when I was starting out: BBC - Food - Video recipes - Get Cooking

If you go to the mini masterclass video's there's instructional video's on everything, from chopping veg, to stir fry's generally, to rather advanced desserts etc..!
Some useful stuff on there, I'm sure it can all be found on youtube etc.., I just trust the BBC for some reason haha

Best of luck, hope you take to cooking like I did, best thing I ever did, absolutely love it now :D

My tip for cooking is to grill, grill, and then grill some more! Chicken, Pork, Steak, Home made burgers made out of lean ground beef.

I am 20 and moving out of the house for school next year, so I decided to learn how to make some meals from my Mom and Dad, both of whom are pretty good cooks. Long story short, I've found that grilling with some steamed veggies on the side and a salad makes for a great, healthy dinner!

If you don't have one i would really reccomend picking up a steamer to cook cauliflower and broccoli, especially broccoli. Broccoli is a wonder food, chocked full of all kinds of good things for you. The best part about steaming veggies is that it takes minimal time.

Hey 7th,

thanks for the advice. It seems like if I have any food groups fitting into my day, its veggies > But I do like me some steamed vegtables, so I think thats the best route to take, especially around dinner time when I have the time to prepare something!

Regarding the grilling, it seems as though I have some homework this weekend! I know I like to eat grilled food :D but I'm pretty novice at cooking. I'll update with any interesting finds. Off to work!

There is this miraculous device call the George Forman Grill... I use it for EVERYTHING! That might be a good investment!

I just want to say, after reading your goals, you sound very mature and ready to take this challenge. I just want you to know, that you can do this and you will feel so much better and have an amazing confidence along with your wonderful personality!

Way to have the Eye of the Tiger!! Go download that song from itunes, it's the best!! So old school!

Banshee,

Thanks for the info and the support! I had heard about the grills, and I think its time to hit up craigslist and start searching for one! It would really open up my food options to have a simple cooker like that on hand.

Quick noonday update.

Got my workout in this morning!
5 mins of cardio to warm up, then I worked on my shoulders and back on the weight machines. Followed the interval training RJ described (1 set at 12, 2nd at 10, 3rd at 8, and 4th at 6, while escalating weights between sets) It def left me with a deep burn, but I dont think it was too much for me to handle. Finished up with some more interval training on the eliptical 30 sec sprint, 90 sec cooldown. I only went for 10 mins, because I woke up a little late, and had to get home to get ready for work!

Breakfast was 2 scoops of whey protein with skim milk (yum yum!) a boiled egg and a banana. Snacked on another egg around 10:30ish. Ate a tuna sandwich on whole wheat, paired with a few ripe peices of cantaloupe. Was pretty tasty!

Thinking about eating the rest of my lunch around 4, since I get off early today!

ugh, something brought on an extreme frustration, I know how long its gonna take to get where I wanna be, but I wish it was quicker -_-

Sometimes I just wish I could crawl out of this fat suit :(

I think ill go hit the gym a bit later before we have people over. At least I'll feel like I'm doing something productive!

Gotta stay positive! :p

Still........ugh low points can be a pita

Went a little crazy last night. Had an old roomate come to town, so we went out to dinner to Oreganos (carrrrrrbs!). Anyways, I tried to play it safe with an easy pasta bowl, but I ate the entire thing! Felt way too full, and came home and fell into a food coma. Next time I need to remember to box half at the beginning of the meal. Otherwise, I tend to eat whatever I have in front of me.

Anyways, I stepped on this scale this morning expecting the worst, and found out I still was holding strong at 342. That was a nice beacon of hope, and I just reminded myself that people slip up, but "failing fast" and getting back on the program is what matters. Decided to run to the gym this afternoon because I slept in :p.

Its like 110 degrees out! Way too hot. Most def a motivator is get up in the morning.

Anyways, started out with some cardio to get my heart rate up to around 155, then did my arms and shoulders today. 4 sets at (12, 10, 8, 6) Arms felt like jello, so I think I did enough! Anyways, came home and hit the pool for thirty minutes. I haven't swam is YEARS, and I rememebered how free it feels. I will absolutly be making more use out of THAT this summer haha.

Foods today,

had a banana and a yogurt when I woke up, wasn't terribly hungry.
Snacked on some cheese sticks, and cottage cheese.
After my workout, got in 2 scoops of my whey drink, with 8oz skim milk, and about to prepare some tuna. Maybe try and cram some veggies in for lunch.

Had a pretty lazy weekend, which was a nice change of pace from work :D
I ended up taking sunday off from the gym too, because its nice to relax the body every now and then. I started out eating pretty good, with some lean turkey on whole wheat, with a bowl of canteloupe. Later, snacked on some yogurt and a boiled egg, and caved in on some pizza and pasta for dinner (since the roomate prepared it). So, kinda disapointed I couldn't finish strong, but it was a weekend meal, so whatever.

Woke up for monday's weigh in, and found myself up to 347 this morning :O
I know I couldn't have failed THAT much this weekend, so I am accounting a lot of it as water weight. However, I see that I am still not trending downwards, so I think I need to kick up the amount of my cardio. As it stands, I usually only get about 10-15 minutes in the morning, and I'm usually finishing right as I start getting my heart up to 170 heart rate. So this week, I'm going to prioritize more time for a fuller cardio workout than strength training, as well as focusing on well balanced, porportioned meals.

I need to stop being afraid of my oven, and learn how to bake some chicken/fish. TONIGHT!

Looks like you're doing great so far. Don't worry about the upward fluctuation, I'm sure it is just temporary. You look like you have things well in hand.

You're doing really well on the exercise front, especially for someone your size and just starting out.
I don't think I'm capable of getting my heart rate that high. :)
