Andrea's closed confessions.

Hi Andrea,:)
I am so still confussed about this "going or feeling hungry" thing. I was watching an old Oprah rerun a few weeks ago, where her trainer said that feeling hungry before going to bed is a good sign??? Makes sense....yet then I read that when you get hungry your body goes in starvation mode....then I read that the the total amount of calories is all that matters.
In other words I could eat very small amounts of high calorie food at say 1000 cals and be hungry later on....or eat heaps of low cal foods and be satisfied ( I don't mean full). I do this most days...eg yesterday this is what I had and I didn't feel hungry at all.

Breakfast......bowl of veg...spinach, brocc, carrots = 100 cals

mid morning....2 ryvitas with tuna and a tad of low fat mayo = 160 cals

Lunch.......more veg = 150 cals

Mid afternoon.....More veg = 100 cals

Dinner.....2 ryvitas and tuna again = 160 cals

Snack.....bowl of veg
and 1 ryvita with thin piece of cheese and vegemite. =240 cals

Total cals = 910....abit low but I am 44 and need less cals...didn't feel hungry, but I also never feel stuffed or full, just satisfied. I believe either way works but I just HATE feeling hungry and thats when I know I am in danger.:(
I still don't understand this starvating mode thing....is it just having too little calories or feeling hungry or both....I never let my body get hungry or angry :D and am still losing.

Starvation mode is when you are not consuming enough calories in your daily diet and you body begins to think that it's starving so it starts storing everything you eat--so you end up gaining weight instead of losing it.

you are not alone

hi Andrea, good work on loosing those 60 pounds. that is a huge accomplishment. don't worry about the few pounds you have gained back. i am sure it will come off easily with the exercise.

i know how you feel about sugar being a trigger for you. it is for me too. funny thing is though, before i was on the atkins diet, salty snacks were my trigger foods, but after loosing on atkins, i craved straight sugary things like chocolate, donuts, candy etc. really not good.

i am trying to loose about 30 pounds and have troubles getting past the first few days of my " diet plan " without blowing it.

together we can do this though !!!

:) :) ;) ;)

LOL, I wish it did the opposite too...when you eat too much it goes into "Too fat mode" and lets go of the food.:D

But how did people loose weight before we had all this information on on calories.....surely they didn't eat less and then when their clothes were still tight think " I must eat more calories". The world is getting fatter not thinner.

I know just what your'e saying, Blitzed. We see people in countries where famine has struck and they're definitely losing weight on their, 2-cups-of-rice a-day, diets. I think all "starvation mode" really means is that if we cut our calories too low, for too long a period, our metabolism will slow down so that we aren't burning calories quite as quickly as we did before all the dieting. But that doesn't mean we will stop burning and losing completely.

It's the same principle with the, "eat a big breakfast" or the "eat lots of small meals" theories -- both of these methods keep you burning calories at a faster rate. You may have noticed that when you get up in the morning you're not all that hungry -- maybe not really ravenous until lunch, even if you skip breakfast; but if you have a bowl of cornflakes with it's high glycemic index (fast burning) then you're really starving by ten o'clock. That's because you've shifted your engine to a higher gear with the cornflakes.

The problem with all this is that those cornflakes have calories, hunger is increased, and as you've noticed, you never get to feel really satisfied. All for the sake of burning a few extra calories a day.

One study I read had two groups of women: One group ate a big breakfast and very small lunch and dinner. The second group saved most of their calories for the evening meal. The first group lost the same amount of weight eating 1300 calories as the second group lost while eating 1200 calories per day.

I, personally, would rather sacrifice the extra hundred calories and be able to have a large satisfying dinner with my husband.

I think the bottom line on all the talk about metabolism is that it's all true -- you'll burn more calories if you: "eat frequent meals, eat most of your calories in the morning, don't eat before bed" etc, HOWEVER that "burn more calories" can be misleading. You may not burn a whole lot more and it may not be worth it, if it turns your entire lifestyle uupside down.

Your height and weight sound gorgeous to me, Blitzed, but I understand the desire to be at your own ideal. I'm a small boned 5'5" and I weighed 110 all through my 20's and 30's -- but that's when I was a smokin' woman.;)

Andrea, you explained that so well,:D thanks.
Before your post I just felt the term starvation mode was used too much and not explained properly (to me)....I mean how many of us here can eat only 500 cals or less for long...not me. When you talked about the breakfast thing, that really hit home as I am rarely hungry in the morning yet everyone keeps hounding on "you must eat breakfast to loose weight" yet if I do I am even more hungry by lunch....so now I have decided to have my breakfast at midmorning or when I feel ready to eat and like you said save some cals for later in the day or night to avoid that "stinking fowl mood " I can get if I'm not allowed to have anything else.

Andrea you have lost so much weight, I read that you said sugar is your trigger food, do you find it hard to stay away from it? Mine are carbohydrates in the form of pasta fried in butter with cheese and toasted cheese sandwiches, infact I had that every other night for about a year (I used to be 135 lbs). Oh who am I kidding...I used these foods to comfort eat and to sedate myself.:(

Keep posting.....you have done so well.
