Sport Anabolic diet/Atkins.

Sport Fitness
I've been reading about the Anabolic diet for a while and have been following it strictly for a week now.
Just wondered what your views might be.

I'm only trying it as more of an experiment, but have acctually started to enjoy it. I totally agree that it is helping me loose fat, but I'm not so sure its giving me the energy it promised.

here is a bit of a description from T-Nation, but its pretty much the same as the Atkins diet.

So this diet basically allows you to gain muscle without gaining fat at the same time? That's almost too good to be true, I might try it out later after I'm done with my current weight loss routine.

Well... I wanted to know how much was properganda and how much is really true. Thats why I'm testing it for myself before I start suggesting it to people.

My meals have been consisting of salads, red pepers, dark green veg, sausages, cheese, tuna, chicken, steak, etc...

I have enjoyed the diet but am craving sugar in a big way.

Energy in minus energy out is what matters, how you reach a negative balance is all up to personal preference.
Protein levels should be just as high as during bulk to maintain muscle mass and you also need a fair amount of fat to function well. That leaves you with carbs thats easy to cut down on. If you cut it to hard as suggested in this article your body simply wont function properly, you will have no energy to work out, you will become irritated etc. there's really no reason at all to cut it that low.

Fat burns in a flame of carbs.. The reason anti-carb diets seem to work is carbs attract water, drop the carbs, drop the water. Of coarse it works the other way also, which is one reason why you 'rebound'. That and low thyroid levels because it needs to adjust back.

Half of the time when you post it reminds of sitting through exercise phys class all over again. I mean that with love, mind you. :)

Hmmmm...refeeds, anyone?

I'm thinking carb cycling sounds better. But don't mind me; I'm still pondering on how male donkeys get angry when they ingest soy.

LOL - yeah, I'm just doing so I have 1st hand experiance.

I can really understand how its great for people loosing weight. I dont feel hungry at all. I dont feel full but its that sort of feeling that I dont want to eat, Like what you get on ECA. Maybe because all the fat is putting me off.

I'm starting to get put off by sausages, I just want a danish, or at least a choc spread sandwich.

Anyone have any anti-atkins reading material, specific to athletes?

Fat=full and satisfying. Match it with fiber and you've got yerself a nice, bloated, full feeling. :)

I'll up yer chocolate whatever with an apple friter...mmmmm

Oh, you mean you can't find any anti-atkins literature? I think most have said that they return to feeling normal after a month of low-carbin' it.

I passed out while on the Atkin's diet once if that counts.

Yeah, I think its the oil. I've never had this much oil in my belly before.

Oh! Did you go into it slowly or cut out all carbs full stop?

I'm eatting about 10% carbs evenly thru the day.

Oh hell...I went balls-out. I was managing a steak house and had all the free steak, ribs, chicken, and seafood at my disposal. I cut out carbs completely and went hawgwild on steak. It was like a week or five days into it and I just passed out, hit my head on this metal thing, and went into a seizure. I immediately carbed up when I came to and felt immensely better.

Geeze!!!

But free steak! that would be AwesomE!

Well I'm still having toast with my breakfast, and will cut out carbs for 14days in 7days time. After that I'll keep my carbs limited. I want to do it for at least 2 months so I get the full effect.

LOL - yeah, I still cant find anything about atkins for athletes. DOWT!!

I dont understand how I can get the energy for high intensity lifting from fats.

I think I'll just go back to carb cycling, I'm all up for testing a diet, but I dont want to hinder my lifting too much.

Yeah - Its really messing with my head. Perhaps when my metabolizm shifts properly I may feel better about it. Its expensive tho. I can normally shop on £50-60/week but its looking like sits gonna be more like £80/week on Atkins.

Watch your cholesterol, sodium, and blood pressure. These are all medical dangers of why the atkins isn't a 'healthy' diet.

And evo, I'll take that as a compliment :D ygpm bro

Sodium - Yeah I was thinking about this last night. Is there anything I can do, eat or take to balence out the extra sodium in my diet. I'm taking on much much more than I should be.

Ive not worked out the perfect menu yet, Ive got the correct amount of cals I need and the right ratio of carbs:fats: protein. But Ive not fine tuned it enough, My sodium intake is too high, cholesterol is on the high side, and quite high in saturated fats.

I also have not yet worked out how to get an energy boost before my workouts. Is there an alternative to dextrose when on atkins?

If your taking in a lot of water, about 1 gal per day, it will help excrete the excess sodium from the body.

I completely understand your desire to keep an open mind and to gain first hand knowledge of a diet before suggesting it or discouraging it to others. However, just from reading your posts, it does not appear to be agreeing with you and your needs/goals too well. It seems you have several valid questions and concerns with it. Besides, you seem to have your sh*t together when it comes to maintaining proper diet for your training goals, why mess with it?

I have been on this diet for 2 months now. I do a shorter 24 hour carb up as when I did 36 hours I felt like I was dying. During the week I feel I have much more energy and no cravings of any sort. I only start craving carbs on day 6 but then it's only few hours before the carb up.

I think I'm almost adjusted now and since I started I lost 2% bf as confirmed by my recent caliper test.

I've now moved away from fatty meat and cheese and eat mostly lean meats and take olive oil, fish oil and nuts as my fat sources. I also eat spinach and broccoli every day. I need to clean up my carb-up day a little I feel as it's now hindering further fat loss.

I'm only doing this diest as my carb tolerance level is very low (hopefully it will increase as my bf gets lower). For anyone who can achieve results on the normal diet I see no reason doing low carb though.

I've had to incorporate more carbs into my daily diet as I've been having trouble adjusting: headaches, slow witted, etc.

I have a bowl of oats with my eggs, but I've dropped adding cheese to the eggs so that the caloric intake is less.

I've also started eating a few baby carrots and apples a day. I'll have to see what comes of this, but I did weigh in at 178.5 this morning which is 11.5lbs less than when I started two months ago, albiet on a very anemic carb intake.

I'll still keep the carb intake low, about 50-75g/day, but it's too soon to tell what the full effect will be.
