Alright--It's true. I'm lazy.

I am incredibly lazy.
Most of my days are wasted on my butt. I have very little desire to move, to help out around the house, to go outside, and most of all ,no desire to exercize. It's not because I'm fat/incapable though. I have quite a bit of stamina for exercizing, for lots of physical activity. I'm just too lazy.

I realize the best thing to do is "Just do it" but I can't seem to be able to wrap myself around that. Any advice from others who stopped being lazy? Specifically about exercizing.

set a specific time every day and just make yourself do it... schedule the time to do it...

generally first thing in the morning is what works for a lot of people so that it's done for the day -I'm an end of th day person because mornings are well - awful...

it takes 28 days to build a habit - all you have to do is start on day one then go to day 2..

Well, I agree that mornings are terrible, being as I have school in the morning.
What about for time? Let's say I wanted to do an hour a night. Do I start off at an hour or do I work my way up to an hour?

Another lazy person here (raising hand meekly).

My husband wont buy this for me, but I want one of those exercise bikes that have the backrest. The recumbent ones. I want to work out, but I dont want to have to work to work.

I think that it will get easier to do if you find something you like to do. I like playing DDR. If I scheduled myself an hour on my now deceased elliptical, it'd never have been done. I'd find any excuse no matter how small to not do it. If I schedule myself for an hour of DDR, I'm more likely to actually do it (and do most of the time) because I enjoy it.

My worst habit is not getting up on my days off even if I'm awake. I'll lay in bed awake for hours with my cats or a book just to not have to get up when I know I should get up and lift or even eat breakfast.

Really, I think you need to find something that works for you. If you dont enjoy it, it'll be harder to stick to.

I have dumbells at home that I use 15 min a day three times a week. My arms are in much better shape and it's only 15 min! Another three days I do squats, lunges, leg stuff... but again just for 15 min.

With doing just 15 min, it seems so much more tolerable. Then once I do it, usually I have more enery for the rest of my day which for me, is leading to a good cycle. I realize if I don't do it, I wont feel as good halfway through the afternoon, and it reminds me of why I do it when I skip a day.

You dont have to start out doing it for an hour, and you don't have to start out with doing it everyday either. Just find what works for you.

Merci Merci :D

I had an exercize bike, but my mom ended up throwing it in the trash because I never used it. I find that I prefer actually going out and biking.

But I think I'll give the schedule thing a try. Thank you :D

Notme, I play DDR too because it is actually fun! I make sure to actually challenge myself with hard songs that get my heart racing. It's also something fun I can do with my husband.

I have a recumbant bike, and I like it a lot. It was expensive, but very comfortable to use. Since I'm sitting back it means my hands are free to play with my ipod, read, use the tv remote, whatever. I just have to be careful not to get too comfortable if you know what I mean. ;)

Usagi, I hope the schedule works for you. Definitely adapt it to fit your needs :). I think you'll do great!

Elena, I wanted the recumbent one because I was hoping I'd be able to surf the internet while riding it... Priorities! LOL. I had a whole plan of getting a little table next to the bike for my laptop. And my husband wont buy it for me :(. Evil man.

I try to mix up the songs, too. I've been playing the highest levels lately (universe and ultramix3). I can't go above seven feet unless I'm going to fall flat on my face though. I suppose that'll happen someday and my husband will laugh at me. I've tried to get him to play with me, but he wont :(. He's always to busy playing WOW.

Personally I think the only way you're going to exercise consistently and keep it up for the long term is if you find something that you love to do. So, I think your first step is to try several different things for a little while and see what you enjoy. Personally I like mountain biking. It's incredibly good exercise, but I don't even view it as that, it's just fun. Even when I do traditional exercises, they're all geared towards making me better on the bike. That's what keeps me going. Fun. You need to find something similar.

I played WoW for a year or so. I'm playing another game now (Lord of the Rings Online), but I still have time for exercise too. :) Maybe if you played WoW with your husband he would try DDR with you?

Well,I'm trying to twist my mom's arm into spending the $150 for the three month pass at the local fitness center where I could spend everyday swimming (my dream exercize!). I think that would be a great start to my lifestyle change, especially since it'll be too hot to be outside during the summer.

We'll see if I can convince her.

Elena, no WoW for me. He's started going on walks with me though and we have a pretty good time doing that. If I start a video game, even online, ya'll would never see me again! I'd be sucked in :). It wouldnt be good.

Usagi, if you agreed to pay your mom back if you didn't use the membership, would she be more likely to get it for you? Then, you'll have the extra reason to go, then because if you dont, you'd have to pay her back.

I love swimming, too. And it definintely is great in summer! It gets way to hot to want to do anything, even in an air conditioned home or building.

I also started swimming, you might want to give it a shot, that kind of gave me the start I needed to work out ( I am also a lazy type, but could not sit on my butt anymore ) :)

Well, I would pay her back either way because I don't feel comfortable taking large amounts of money from her. The problem is that she's just coming off of her student loan so finances are starting to get tighter, however I don't think it'll be more than a couple of months before I can pay her back so I'll beg like no tomorrow.

well. this is what i do. if i stop going to the gym, im lazy and i dont want to go. and i tell myself everyday that i'll go "tomorrow", but i dont go. then, one day i'll just say "god damn it! im going!" and i'll get ready and go to the gym. and that ONE time, will make me want to go the next day, and going the next day, will make me want to go the next day. it becomes addictive. but if i get out of the habit, i go right back to the lazy mode again. its all about going that FIRST time, then you'll WANT to go.

Going to the gym takes way too much effort for me, so I've never owned a gym membership. It is much easier for me to exercise at home, and much harder to procrastinate it that way (exercise bike staring me in the face, etc). Now I have a great routine going and I actually *want* to exercise. Imagine that. :) When I exercise in the morning before work I find I have a lot more energy throughout the day and I feel like I got a head start - already burnt off some of the calories I was going to eat for the day!

I don't put my weights away anymore either. If they're out, then I have no excuse to not pick them up. When I first started I didn't want to get them out because then I'd have to put them away...

Usagi, this is the "Harsh Truth" section, so I get a pass on being blunt.

1) Have you thought about getting a job to pay for your gym membership? Even if you're in school, you could get a job working on weekends, or an hour or two at night. If your mom's tight on money, that would be a nice thing to do.

2) You admit you're lazy. Good. So what? No one can supply you with motivation. If you want something, you need to work for it. And believe me, it's a lot easier to do that when you're young than when you're my age.

'Lazy' isn't as good enough reason.
Nobody is 'lazier' than me.
I just make myself do it anyway.
I'll bet you that there are a ton of people on this forum that hate to excercise & just do it anyway!

I must agree. I'm a very very lazy person as well, I just had to make myself go. Once you start, it becomes a habit. Now, if I don't go and do something I feel horrible! I love being active now and it's hard for me to not do the things I want (had a little surgery and I have to heal) and it's really killing me! So I've just been going on walk during my lunch hour at work... at least it's something!

One thing I know, from being lazy myself, is that you just need to go and do it. Once you start, it's a lot easier to continue.

I know you go to school, but even so, you could still go in the morning. Just get up earlier and go for that bike ride. Trust me, I'm not a morning person, but when I workout in the morning I feel absolutely wonderful afterwards. It really gets you energized for the day and you feel so great about yourself for exercising!
