5K in a month, can I do it?

Reading my mind.

Hey GT, I am preparing for a 5k in a month and can't believe (well yes I can) that you asked the exact question I was going to ask. My goal is to run it in a month. I have done 4 5ks last year, and pretty much ran/walked/ran, but my times were never fast as I am doing these slowly and somewhat fearful - and yes as another poster had said, I am definitly "overthinking it". So yes, my times were 45 minutes. Doing this with my 12 year old child also.

So anyway - too the point, what advice can you give me. I want to run this one most of the way if not all of the way and I am excited to do it - but again fearful.

Thanks.

Wow, you were really searching for threads if you found this one, lol. Almost a year since the last post. I think the best idea is just to keep at it but don't overtrain!!!!!!! Run maybe every other day and gradually increase your distance every week or so. Not a huge increase, just run for a minute or two longer than you're used to running. You'll be at 5K in no time at all.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET!!!!!! Get fitted for shoes at a good running store and make sure you've got some type of insole that fits your foot pretty well. I just got through a battle with plantar fasciitis. Trust me, you don't ever, EVER want to go through that. It'll stop your running in its tracks. It really got to me mentally and I ended up gaining a few pounds and am just now building my mileage back up a bit. It's quite frustrating but I'm willing to be more patient now in order to not get hurt again.

Thanks for reviving this thread. I learned a lot from all the folks here! The foot issues squashed my 10 k and 1/2 marathon plans but I've alread identified these distance races I'm going to run this year and am going to register once registration opens. Let's get after this!

Definitely like some of the suggestions in this thread. I signed up for a 5K but it's not until May so I have about 16 weeks. I can probably crank out about 2 miles running continuously (sometimes a little more sometimes a little less), however, I've been doing 4-5 miles combo of run/walk. Whatever I can get in in an hour.

The last 5K I did was back in 2007 and I ran it in about 30min. I'm hoping to beat that time, but it's been a long while since i've done a lot of running. Just picking it back up again.

I have not recently done any running. I am currently weight training 4 days per week. I also ride the stationary bike twice per day on M,Tu,Th,F (40 minutes per session) and for 48 minutes once on Wednesdays. I may increase this to 64 minutes before long. I am 5'7" and weigh right around 230 lbs. and my weight is steadily decreasing.

Wow, OLD THREAD! I don't remember if I actually ran that 5k or not. But, I did run a 1/2 marathon back in May! I followed one of Hal Higdons 12 week programs and worked my way from 3 miles up to 13. That's something I never thought I'd do. It's amazing what a little commitment and hard work will do for ya!

Greg, nice job on the half marathon! I did my first standalone half marathon in December but I have done a couple other half marathons as part of Half Ironman triathlons. I think I will do my first standalone marathon, the Disney Marathon, in January in preparation for a full Ironman next fall.

BTW, there are a lot of new members digging up old threads. I think they do it to get their post count high. I suspect a lot of them are spammers.

Hey! Good to see you are still around! Sounds like you are still kicking it up pretty well. Congrats on your half also. It's not something I thought I'd ever do but as my training progressed, it just happened. I'm not sure if I've got the dedication/time to do a full but am planning on another half this November. I've gotten really lazy since the last one so I'm just getting back into thing.

I am going to do a sprint tri pretty quickly. Swimming is TOUGH! I just sold my old bike and will be upgrading, I just have to find the time and money. My other "want to do" is a century bike ride next summer. All very accomplishable once I pick an event and start training. Good luck with all your events. TTYL
