5K in a month, can I do it?

Here's the deal. My wife is a nurse and the place she works is helping out on a 5K run on March 8th. I'm considering running it just for kicks, I've always wanted to do a 5K but just haven't. So, do I have time to get ready for it?

I have run a bit in the past. Nothing extreme but I did get up to 2.5 miles at one point (which I know is nothing to you all but hey, it's start). I had planned on doing a 5K then but the weather was terribly and I wussed out.

I really think I've got time to get ready but just need a little guidance. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Greg

If you are in ANY type of shape and you have been doing some type of working out, you can do a 5K. :D

I have not recently done any running. I am currently weight training 4 days per week. I also ride the stationary bike twice per day on M,Tu,Th,F (40 minutes per session) and for 48 minutes once on Wednesdays. I may increase this to 64 minutes before long. I am 5'7" and weigh right around 230 lbs. and my weight is steadily decreasing.

Give me thoughts on how to start, how long to run etc. I figure with 4 weeks, I should be able to make good progress. I'm thinking of replacing one of my cardio sessions/day with running and increasing distance steadily.

Thoughts?

I don't currently have any huge aspirations for running but would kind of like to have that as part of my fitness plan.

step 1.
get in your car and go 1.5 miles away from your house and drop off a lil water bottle.

step 2
park your car in the driveway, check the time.

step 3
take a deep breath and go get your water bottle

DONE!

then it is a matter of "how fast" you want to be able to do one a month from now.

DO IT TONIGHT G.

Boy FF, you're kinda pushy, hehehe.

I'm getting the feeling that I'm making more of this than it is. Are you telling me there is no suggested plan for a 5k and that if I want a real plan then I have to run a real distance?

I don't know if I'll run tonight 'cuz I want to be disobedient to FF, it's the rebel in me. But, I might, there's no tellin'. Really, I might run 1/2 mile or so. I figure that will get me to hurtin' pretty good tomorrow anyhow. I could work it up to a mile by the end of the week, 1 1/2 miles a couple of times next week then keep rolling up to the 3 mile mark. If that sounds OK, let me know.

Great, now I gotta rearrange my workout and stationary to incorporate this. Maybe I'll become a junkie like some of you. Time will tell.

Seriously, if there is a real plan for weenie distances, let me know. I appreciate it, Greg

Greg, there are loads of such plans if you just Google it. Here's to one I'm saving for when our mini ice age is over.

I know it says two months, but almost of all those programs assume you can't run for **** to start. I like the cool running one because they also give you the time in minutes, so you can do more if you can, but still have an idea of the run/walk ratios. For a month, I'd just do it 6 days a week instead of 3, but I'm a little bit crazy. If that doesn't float your boat, just run some searches.

Anyway, I think you can do it. I mean, if you're not a wuss. :D

I appreciate it Focus. That's exactly what I was running into, they were all 2-3 month programs and I've only got 1 month. Anyway, I think I'll go try to jog a short while before it gets dark. Looks like I might have to start jogging between work and dinner.

I STARTED!!! Thank god I'm not a girl, that wouldn't have sounded right. Anyway, I got sick of overanalyzing it and went out and ran. Now, it was a very, very short distance, 1/2 mile, but it felt OK.

The last time I tried to get into running I was drinking beer probably 5 days/week and had absolutely no get up and go. Tonight, although not easy, it wasn't too bad at all. I have no doubt that I can do a 5K in a months time. No, I don't mean it will take me a month. I mean, I will be able to run a 5K by March 8th. I will keep my progress updated in my journal and come back with questions. Thanks for the input, Greg

Greg, if you can crank out 3 K by then, you will be fine. Once you get in that race/run with all those nurses, male and female, your ego will push you another 1 or 2 K farther than what you thought you were capable of.:D You'll be fine.

ok! if you were a fatso, dingo, retardo, turdo, one legged, with a broken cane, you would walk a 5K in 45 minutes.

Good grief!

p.s of course there is a "plan on the internet" to work your way up to a 5k. That is for the people who will spend 30 hours discussing the dynamics of a 45 minute walk- hahahaha

Do you relize there are people, not me, that can get that distance done within 15 minutes!

Don;t jerk this thing off bro. you are embarrassing yourself.

DANG THAT FELT GOOD!

hahahaha

oh hey! you went out and ran cool.

ok.. here is the best 5K plan.

you go the distance 4 times a week. walk, crawl, run, skip, jump, whatever. You just do the entire 3 miles.

you will get impatient, and start runnin more of it. the next thing you know you will run the whple thing.

you rplan of running a lil further as you go along is nice sounding, but in reality as you get better, you will run faster, and end up runnin shorter faster distances. If you know you are going the whole way no matter what, you will do better to pace yourself.

10/20's are perfect. Notice- that is not- run as far as you can and then walk. It is a controlled run! Walk for ten left foot steps, run for 20 right foot steps. then do 10/30's, then 10/40's. Before you know it, you will lose count and just run.

Nothing worse than WALKING accrossed the finish line of a 5K because you didn't manage your energy.

GOOD FOR YOU!

I can't erase my other post-- IT jjust has too much positive energy!

SWEAT DAILY!
FF

nice--- yer a player! welcome!!!!

Thanks again FF. I like that plan. The reason I started with such a short distance is to see how sore my legs get. I remember last time I ran, I used muscles I had forgotten about and man it hurt. So, let me get these legs out of their initial shock and I'll implement what you suggested. Cya, Greg

I did the entire 3 miles yesterday. Actually a bit more. I slowed my pace way down and it was actually not too difficult. I jogged 1/2 mile, walked for 30 seconds or so and kept on like that until I had jogged a total of 3 miles. My hips and quads are a little sore today but not too bad at all.

FF has got it goin' on. I took his advice on pace and it made it so much easier. Now that I'm over the mental block of going 3 miles I can work on weeding out the rest stops and gradually increasing my pace. The 5K is 4 weeks from yesterday. By that time I'm hoping to be able to crank it up to a 30 minute pace for raceday, just under a 10 minute mile.

I did have a small blistered area on the ball of my left foot. It was really just the beginnings of one, where the area is sore and the skin a tad bit raised up. I think if I snug up the laces a tad bit on that area of my shoes then I'll be fine. A little more fine tuning and I'll be ready to go the distance.

Thanks for all the support and advice. I'll be crankin' it out before long. I'm even considering doing the "Tulsa Run" in October (15k) but I don't want to get ahead of myself. It always seems to fall on the 1st day of Muzzleloader season for deer so I'll have to see. There are plenty of 5K and 10K runs between now and then for training purposes.

That's it for now. I'll update in my journal. Take care, Greg

Great work mate! keep it up. I think the trick here is to not take it to seriously, and just get out and do it.

Good work on cutting back on the beers!

Have you thought about another goal after you smash out this 5km on March 8?

Backspace, that was over a year ago and I routinely run 3 miles, probably 3-5 days per week now. I actually ran 5 miles Friday. Like anything else, it's more of a process and learning from those that are already good at it. I got tons of advice, applied it and was successful. I've run one 5K race already and am planning on doing another one soon. I'd even like to do a 10K and a half marathon sometime this year. I had lofty running goals but just went through a divorce and bought a house. So, for now, I'm happy with 5 miles. It's not hard or intimidating anymore. My next goal is a 5K road race in less than 29 minutes and a half marathon before the end of the year! I'm right at 195 pounds now, 190 is my goal there (from a whopping start weight of 241.5).
