MMA Fighters

I could be wrong in creating this, but I believe there is no MMA Fighters thread yet? I've seen a bunch of UFC Discussion threads, but none dedicated to all of MMA. And if anyone is a true fan they understand that UFC is not the only thing out there (not trying to bash the UFC at all because I love it just as much as the next person, and even train to hopefully one day be in it). I created this thread in hopes that people could talk about the greats that aren't in UFC while also talking about the ones that are. I'll start with the ones that aren't in by dropping some names and see what all of your opinions are on them?

- Fedor Emelianenko
- Urijah Faber
- Cris Cyborg (I haven't forgotten about the women )
- Miguel Torres
- Michael McDonald
- "And all the other people I could list and that you guys know."

and of course I would love to start debate on the rising mma people who are still questionable...

- Brock Lesnar
- Bobby Lashley (Sorry to start with two WWE guys, but I just had to)
- Shane Carwin
- Jon Jones
- Todd Duffee
- "And all the other people I could list and that you guys know."

Just a few thoughts….

- Fedor Emelianenko – love the guy, big and cuddly lol….I really like his creepy laid back brother too.

- Urijah Faber – very athletic. I’d like to see him and Melvin Gillard go at it.

- Cris Cyborg (I haven't forgotten about the women )Ladies has some good Sh** going on.

- Miguel Torres – skinny runt BUT outstanding

- Brock Lesnar – Okay this guy obviously has some skill due to his college wrestling but nowhere near the skill levels that you see in well rounded fighters in MMA. This is a large step to putting the old debate about a small skilled fighter being able to take the larger unskilled man. Yeah, it can be done but this dude proves it ain’t as easy as the little guys whine on about. He dominates with his weight and pounds them, their skill all bottled up under his weight.

Yeah, it's like I tell my friends too. He's been going against people who are no longer in their prime. His first test to show everyone his development and that he IS at the top of his class will be when he goes against Shane Carwin. The guy might not be as big as Brock, but his hands are actually bigger than his. Which to me will actually play a big factor in the match. Brock doesn't have to worry about being the most precise person ever because his fist are so damn huge, but for once there will be someone in the cage who has that same advantage.

I don't know if you watched TUF10 last night, but that actually worries me about the heavyweight division. It's a little too early to call it, but off first impression it seems like those guys are really lacking in skill compared to the heavyweights from past Ultimate Fighters. The first fight the wrestler dominated because the other guy was a striker (which I know is a bad matchup for him, but there's no reason to not have some type of takedown defense. It's probably the easiest thing in MMA to learn compared to everything else. It almost seemed like he couldn't react/ learn how to defend each time the guy transitioned to shoot.)

Why do people always react or act this way about "WWE guys" like it's a bad thing or it goes against any kind of credibility. No offense, but people need to stop pigeon-holing WWE guys or anybody who's been involved in pro wrestling as a joke. In many ways, it's a much more difficult, challenging, and harder lifestyle physically, mentally, and emotionally than most professional sports including MMA and UFC, regardless if the actual matches are "fake," predetermined, choreographed or whatever. Here's just one small example...

I agree with the boys from sherdog radio about Kimbo Slice. They should do a lot of cut scenes to the guy.

Kimbo slice…..
Cooking a steak
Combing his beard
Taking a nap
Flossing his teeth

Thant would be funny

You have to remember he is talking about MMA abilities, not just physical shape and endurance. I think people reatct this way to "WWE guys" because the majority of them are not trained in an actual fighting art. They are not saying that it isn't physically taxing, and doesn't require athleticim or hard work. I think its just the fact that their skills are more acrobatic and charismatic, rather then applicable fighting skills.

Guys like Brock Lesnar have impressive college wrestling backgrounds, which is applicable. He is used to a fully resisting body fighting back, making quick decisions based on how his opponent reacts, cionsistantly going full speed until the match is over etc... That is what he used when transitioning into MMA (granted he needed to learn striking skills and grappling skills as well). But he certainly doesn't use anything he did back in the WWE.

Again, not to discredit the hard work and athleticism required by the WWE guys, but it simply does not apply in an MMA match, and that is why people have the attitude that they expect them to do poorly.

People also tend to look questionably at other sport atheletes transitioning to MMA until they prove themselves. Like the former NFL players on TUF 10 for example. I just think WWE gets a more critical eye because their shows depict fighting.

I have intense man crushes on Shinya Aoki and Genki Sudo for their grappling styles. I pretty much want to be an amalgam of them.

But other than that, Fedor is an unstoppable machine, and Lesnar is pretty formidable as well. I think Lesnar and Fedor would be a great fight. It won't happen any time soon, but the winner of that fight would be the greatest MMA heavyweight in the world.

I wish I could capitalize on my potential like GSP, but he seems to be more of a normal guy who, deep down, is a bit vulnerable to pressure, nrevousness, etc. People like Fedor...they just don't give a ****. Kimbo Slice used to be like that-- now he's got too much to lose, which is why he's lost so much.

I also feel like I must mention that I wish I could grow a beard like Arlovski.

I'm a huge MMA fan, have a little bit of kickboxing and jiu jitsu training but nothing to brag about.

GSP and Anderson Silva are heros in the world of MMA just because of the insane amount of effort and dedication they have put in.

Michael Mcdonald isn't really a MMA fighter, hes a kickboxer. I think he has only had a couple MMA fights.

Brock Lesnar in my eyes has yet to prove himself but to be fair he does have a very good wrestling background. He has been training MMA for a couple years now, I believe, so to say he relies only on size anymore would be stretching it.

Shane Carwin... well IMO he is the next Heavyweight champ. The guy is very close to the same weight as Lesnar but has much better striking and is good in jiu jitsu which can counter Lesnar's wrestling. Not to mention hes from my state and trains out of the gym I go to so I'm a little biased lol. Oh and he's never been out of the first round in 11 fights. =)

But... Lesnar is apparently ill and might not be able to fight for a long time if ever again. Shane vs. ?? for an Interim title might be next.

I think Fedor would ruin Lesnar in the first minute of the first round and I would love to see that. I really wish the UFC had continued rather than canceled Pride after acquiring it.

Yeah I heard lesnar was ill and was not able to fight! To be fair to the dude he has done pretty well, he gets my respect as if you watch him training for his fights he has put in a big effort and dedication. Also his last Frank Mir fight, Frank Mir was a state.

Also I think Fedor should be brought to the UFC and give the fighters of his weight category a run for their money, he is a machine. Anyone seen the clip of him getting slammed on his neck in the ring and then he reverses it and goes on to submit the dude?? Can't remember the guys name who gets submitted after slamming him!
