Thanks so much for your reply Chillen! It's really awesome to hear from someone who has experienced this before.

I have been doing a lot of reading about ketosis and I think I fully understand what is happening here...

I have also read up about the side effects and how you can know your in ketosis (bad breath being the most obvious).

I also got some of those KetoStix (the pee test), and tried one out today. It showed no signs of ketones yet.

I'll just keep going with it and hope for the best.

You said that you met your goal in three weeks? Do you remember how many calories you were eating during those 3 weeks? Or a better question would be what was your calorie defecit if any? I read that you can eat "as much as you want" while on this diet.. I don't really buy that, though.

I think I may be eating too much... but i'm so hungry. How about cardio.. did you do any?

This is just a recap and synopsis:

There are alot of opinions that specifiy not doing cardio when attempting ketosis. And, yes, there are those that say one can eat "within reason" what they wish as long carbs are low. However, I couldnt get myself to believe that I could eat over in calories (even in a low-carb attempting ketosis), and lose the "last little bit" of fat I wanted off.

I couldnt shake the laws of energy balance out of my mind. Therefore, I ate in deficits according to what I was doing each day and did vary and zig-zag my calories. I kept primarily -500c deficits along WITH sub 50g carbs, and used cardio to manipulate my calorie intake:

1. So I could eat more and still maintain a deficit (staved off hunger and other problems), 2. My body acted VERY FAVORABLY TO IT, and 3. It kept me energized.

Im NOT suggesting this. But to give you an example, I did 45 cardio sessions in May 07. All were progressive in nature (Intensity and duration). There are only 31 days in May. It didnt hurt me one bit.

I would argue (with all the personal material and notes I have), it was a positive addition. Overkill----Absolutely. Did it hurt me? NO. Would I do it again, YES. AM I whacked.......YES.

EDIT: Some will call it crazy, some wont believe it (the 45 cardio sessions in one month). In either case I do not care. I just call it buckling down and getting honed in and getting serious about it--and it took me home.

What else matters? At the time I didnt know what it was gonna take. Now I do. I may do less I may not.....in either event---I WILL DO WHAT IT TAKES!

well this was my calorie breakdown for today

Total: Calories 2290
Fat: 150 1350 58%
Sat: 51 460 20%
Poly: 18 160 7%
Mono: 37 333 14%
Carbs: 37 120 5%
Fiber: 7 0 0%
Protein: 212 847 37%

I got my calories lower today but I was damn hungry.. with activities factored in my maintance was at least 2500.

only 30 net carbs today... I did some reading today that suggests getting fat % up to 70% at "induction" into ketosis... I will shoot for a higher fat percent tommorrow...

and hopefully I start to get some bad breath already! :p

Are you willing to go without sex with your bad breath? To what extremes do you want low BF? HEHEHE........just kidding. :)

I remember, my wife wearing nose plugs to bed. She was just messen though. LOL.

I found some cool pictures... the one where I am flexing my bicep is when I was an eighth grader, heh.

The one with my long hair is when I grew it out for four years and I cut it off at the end of summer 2006. I donated it to "locks of love".

Then I took some pictures of my meat packed freezer, my video games, and the lovely carbs (my cereal and oatmeal) that I won't be able to eat for a while:p

well everyone looks a lot better flexed. If you saw my relaxed pic... you might see why. I think I look pretty fat in those relaxed pics.

Plus I'm only planning on cutting for a month and it's kind of an experiment... I want to see how easy it is to lose fat when I give it all of my effort. That way I can determine how much fat is acceptable to gain during a bulk..

If nothing else I want to get rid of the fat that I gained while bulking..

Today it was my rest day from the gym. I rode on my exercise bike for about 1.5 hours tonight for cardio.

I will post my diet today.

7:30
5 eggs (2 whole)
3 slices of deli ham
2 strips bacon
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup spinach

10:30
1.5 oz summer sausage

12:00
4.25 ounces steak
1 cup broccoli

3:00
3 oz pork loin
1 serving full fat cottage cheese
fish oil capsule

6:00
2 ounces rib meat
1 cup spinach
.7 ounces cheddar cheese
2 slices of deli ham
fish oil capsule

8:30
2.5 ounce steak
1 cup spinach
fish oil capsule
.5 cup broccoli

and at 11:00 I will have
1 serving full fat cottage cheese

Giving me these results for the day:

Total: Calories 1904
Fat: 121 1088 59%
Sat: 43 386 21%
Poly: 13 120 6%
Mono: 47 419 23%
Carbs: 26 77 4%
Fiber: 7 0 0%
Protein: 173 693 37%
Alcohol: 0 0 0%

So only 19 net carbs for the day... and my calories are lower than my maintance... which is about 2400 for today.

Still no bad breath, though. Hopefully with another really low carb day tommorrow I will get there.

Maybe I should cut out the cottage cheese completely since it has sugars in it..

Just got back from the weight room. Today was my upper body day so I did:

Bench Press
Pec Fly's
Shoulder press
Shoulder raises
skull crushers (tricep)
tricep pushdown
chin ups
bicep curls
wrist curls and reserve wrist curls
various ab exercises (this doesn't necessarily fall into my upper body day, I Just do abs every 2 days)

It was an EPIC workout.. haha. It really felt awesome.

I know people say that while on keto your workouts suffer... it hasn't happened to me yet, I had just as much energy as before when in the weight room... and i've had like 130g of carbs total in the past 4 days.

I actually am really enjoying this diet. I love eating tons of meat... and the great thing is is that we are suppose to have fiber filled veggies... so I get to have the carbs that I really like. Plus the carb up day once a week, I'm going to have fun that day making some food.

I actually feel leaner already... but still no bad breath. I will try that pee test here again soon. Fourth day and no ketosis... that's just weird.
 
I have been thinking about my weight training program.... the best days for me are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. I could go every day if I needed to but the gym is always packed during Tuesday, Thursday when I can finally get in there (busy all morning and afternoon at college), then on Sundays it doesn't open till 4 and it's packed.

I am thinking of doing a full body day Monday and Wednesday and then on Friday do lower body, and Saturday do upper body... what do you guys think?

Hmm.. I think i'll make a thread about this so more people see it.

i'm going to the super market and walmart right now.

I am going to pick up some ultra fatty steaks and burger etc. Then I am going to go to walmart and buy some baking pans so that I can make flaxseed bread.
 
Heh, I went up to one of the butchers that was stocking the meat... and asked him..

"Hey, I have a quick question."

he says "......ok"

"can you help me find very high fat steak with the cheapest price?"

he looks at me puzzled "you want fatty steak?"

"yeah, I want high fat steak that's cheap"

then he proceeded to show me... hahaha. I asked him kind of just to amuse myself... plus all I could see myself was ribeye and that was expensive as hell.
 
Are you using the ketostix to see if you are in ketosis?
