Sparrows Experiment

you mentioned not wanting to get off the bike. You told me something tha has helped me,,, "slow down in order to speed up."

Also, do not use my time as an indicator for you. i got off and pretended I was in transition, walked a lil distance and then took off running slow, then hard, then slow, to see how i would react in my race conditions.

BUT- i think my bike is a decent one, an 17 as an average speed was no sissy pace. I did slow way down when eating. the 1/2 PB&J's took about 5 minutes to eat (x2).

Do the RACE!!
if not for you, for me,
if not for us, for HIM,
if not for us or for Him,

do it to prove you are not a stick in the mud thirty something sissy has been swimmer!!!!

:)

Regular spin instructor gone today and the sub was very boring! I stayed 30 long boring minutes and then just got changed and hung out in the beautiful weather by the pool till my class started. I'm very tired and lethargic feeling today. I'll be taking the next 2 days off.

just an fyi sparrow, I had seen you had some problems with shin splints.

and I found this while looking for a knee brace, I have no knowledge or any other info on this

Look interesting.

I am going to be trying out one of their knee straps.

Thanks Chris, thats awesome, and sort of confirmation as to what I was looking towards already. I was in a sports store yesterday looking at something similar. I have taped my shin to do some easy jog in place stuff in my house and it helps a TON. I know something like that compression sleeve would be perfect. thanks a lot for thinking of me.

I took today off and I feel more tired than I do when I workout for 2 hours. I'm extremely tense and I'm finding my shoulders up by my ears a lot. I think its just a combo of stuff. Anyway, I'm going to swim 2000 easy yards in the pool tomorrow just to get some of this tension out of me. The funeral is tomorrow and then I head to my parents house where the rest of my family will meet me after the ride on Sat. My license expires on Saturday :( so I have to go to DMV on the way to my parents. no fun. At least I'll get a new picture! lol.
A friend offered to tighten up my bike for me tonight. I was SO grateful. Its had a few falls in my garage :( he said that I may have had some serious problems out there had I not gotten it looked at. Things were pretty loose. I knew that, but had no idea how bad it was. It feels so solid now, what a difference.
Looking foward to the ride

Century ride was the hardest thing ever. I'm 30 today and I feel every ache!

Happy Birthday Sparrow!

AND - you finished!

I have two things to say-

One, now WE know something don't WE? 100 miles is a long, long, very long ride. Heck- in a car, on the open highway, it takes well over an hour!

Two, until you have riden 100 miles, there is no way to KNOW, really KNOW, how far that is.

I hold you in the highest this day!!

you are my leader, coach, encourager, and friend. Today you confirmed why.

curtsy

Congratulations Katie, for completing something that most of us would not be able to seriously attempt. Happy Birfday, and enjoy those naughty cheat foods, you've certainly earned them.

Thanks Tom

I had an exhausting day. I slept SO hard but woke up still very fatigued. My body though, is fine! Weird. I'm not sore anywhere. I only notice fatigue in my muscles walking up the stairs or lifting something heavy and my resting heart rate is very high. I'm also 2 pounds HEAVIER than normal. lol. thats just not fair

I continued in my gluttony today. My birthday cake is just about gone :) One of my little birthday resolutions is to get down and dirty with this diet thing and just be more serious with fat loss. The only time I did that in a successful way was when I was lifting more...so thats my plan. I'm a little burned out on the races and really, there aren't any more besides a marathon relay I'm going to do, which is only 6 miles. I need a breather and a change. I also have a buddy who wants to lift more so that'll be good motivation

Its been 3 weeks since I stopped running and I'm going to add one mile 3 times this week probably after spin class so I'm already warm. next week I'll do a 1/2/2 mile split, the week after that 2/2/2 etc...I'm going to be systematic and gradual about it and at any time if shin splits come back I'll just back off. If my plan works, I should be up to about 25 mile weeks by the new year and thats a great base to work with for the new tri season.

N'way. I'm really tired. Hope everyone has a fabulous week!

hun, with how bad your shins are, do you really think 3 weeks off is enough?

just follow these guidelines: mild pain and you should stop. You shouldn't get to the mild pain stage.

Severe pain means you've already gone above and beyond your limits for the day. Stop immediately.

I hope all goes good for you, girl!

Thanks. I'm not sure, actually. I've read that it can take from 2 weeks to a couple months depending on the severity and I know mine have been pretty bad. I guess I'm starting pretty low because if I start hurting at only a MILE then I obviously need more time! If I can increase a mile or two a week and still feel nothing I'll keep going. I also need to know if I need to tell the relay team I've agreed to run with that they need to find a replacement for me. I should know that pretty quick. Thanks for keeping me in check though, I really really appreciate it! I promise to stop at even the slightest hint of pain :D

TOM-yes, NROL is on the radar, in fact the friend I'm going to lift with split the cost of the book wtih me and its already been ordered

Spin class and 1 mile run.

My legs did NOT want to bike today. It was hard and I went breathless pretty quickly even on the easier stuff.

The run was a cinch. I did it at a 10 min pace so I was able to really tune in and feel how my foot was falling on the tread, my posture, etc. I reallllly wanted to go faster and longer, so although I had no pain in my shins, it was painful to have to tone it down so much

that is maturity as an athlete. Slow down right now so you have "the run" forever. Just think, someday you are going to be old like me. The run is what i cherish most.

1/2 hour spin
45 min "bootcamp"
core

Spin felt great. not at all like yesterday. I realized something that I feel lame for just now realizing. I don't have aero bars on my bike so I have a higher posture than I do when I spin. Sitting higher and leaning over to grip the bars strains the lower back more than if you just rely on the aero bars for support, especially if the muscles are used to, and trained to that posture. On my road bike I fatigued wayyy earlier than I thought I would, and it was mostly cause of the lower back issues. On my spin bike I can go 2 classes back to back, hills, intervals, etc and my back never hurts. I stay in the aero position almost the whole time unless I'm out of the saddle. hmmmm

anyway, today was a good workout. the bootcamp was fun and very challenging. A bunch of my buddies are doing a mud run at a military base close by this weekend so the bootcamp course was for them. We did a lot of running and some sprints and my shins were great. so far so good.

hey--- not that I actually pay attention to your posts or anything, but you mentioning the aero bars .... well uh,, um

My RIDE is much nicer now!

Thank you Sparrow.

Sparrow, Congrats on the century and happy belated birthday..

yehaw FF! I'm gonna get me some-of-em :)

STINGO-NROL is in my hot little hands

Chris-Thank you!

Wowie, I'm pretty sore today from yesterday's creative "boot camp" It never feels like its going to hurt the next day..but then..well..it does!

I went to spin regardless and I had a great ride. We have an amazingly enthusiastic motivational instructor and somehow she really gets you to go beyond yourself in that class. I have had times where the resistance is so high there's nowhere else for it to go and I'm looking for more :D Today was sort of one of those days. I seem to have my best rides when I'm super sore. Don't ask me how that works. I like to feel those muscles being stretched to their max
I didn't run my one mile as planned because we did so much running and sprinting yesterday so I just did the whole spin class and then went to teach my swimmers. We got new equipment today, very exciting. I'm also adding an evening Masters class in 2 weeks that will go M-Th because the morning has been so successful! I'm hoping to get fewer triathletes and more recreational/ competitive swimmers with that bunch. Then I can actually teach the other strokes without having to defend WHY we're doing that (when all they do is freestyle in triathlons).
Moving is almost done. We've done it gradually throughout the week so it hasn't been THAT bad but I'm not getting much sleep.
Anyway thats all for now
