Charlize Theron grew up on a farm near Johannesburg, South Africa. Her childhood however was not the most ideal upbringing. Her youth was overshadowed by violence and abuse within the family household. Her father was an alcoholic, and would attack her mother on various occasions. Finally in an act of self defense Charlize's mother shot her father with his pistol putting a stop to the violence.
Charlize Theron's mother sent her 15-year-old daughter to ballet lessons and had the hope that this was the way to a better future. Charlize Theron trained hard and became part of the prestigious Joffrey Ballet School in New York. However, the intensity of the training left traces of a knee injury ending Charlize Theron's career as a dancer. This opened another door for her into the world of acting. Initially working as a model, Charlize walked the runways until she got her first roles as an actor.
Her biggest success was a very physically demanding role: Charlize Theron played the female lead as a serial killer in the film Monster. She went on to win the Oscar for the role of best leading female actress. It was her health that prevented Charlize Theron to take on any further roles after this, one which many Hollywood actors battle. However, from one day to the next, and with the help of hypnosis, Charlize Theron gave up her smoking addiction. As a former dancer she knew about the effectiveness of Pilates classes, and that physical fitness alone was not enough for success.
