Your favorite crunch varieties?

Hello all,

What are some good crunch variations to mix into my routine? (I know there are a ton of variations listed in the exercises subforum, but I’d like to know some of the ones you prefer.) Right now I only do normal crunches, and I’d like to add some variety to the mix. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to reply!

P.S. If it matters, I don’t have an exercise ball yet.

I am still mega weak with crunches so I just do normal ones, but the next ones I'd look at would probably be reverse crunches, or simple right knee to left elbow type crunches.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm a newb. :)

One I am loving right now is a Reverse Crunch with a Twist (on a bench) with a twist at the top (to left, center, to right) then repeat. You can lower your legs all the way back down or keep a smaller range of motion...the key is to avoid using momentum.

Crunch Time

Hey there,
I do crunches on a ball or a mat, and I try to crunch in the middle, to the left, and to the right. It's much more fun with good music :). I also enjoy doing other abdominal exercises besides crunches. Try doing some leg lifts; lying flat on a bench, then lifting your legs to a 45 degree angle and then lowering them 2 inches to the ground. Try repeating this. You may want to also hold your legs at 2 inches from the ground for 30 seconds. Planks are also excellent for abs. Place your elbows on the ground and keep them there, but lift the rest of your body off the ground, but stay low to the ground and hold this for 30 seconds. It burns but feels great when you are done. I also enjoy using the wheel. You can get a wheel at walmart or target. You roll out with the wheel and come back to starting position. There are so many things you can do with abs. Just make it fun.
I hope this helps and you have a great day!

A few really good crunch variations are: The Reverse Crunch, Vertical Leg Crunch, Long Arm Crunch. But the best is the Exercise Ball Crunch (I know you don't have a ball, but you should use one at the gym -- this is a really good exercise).
