Yoga?

My friend and I have decided that we're going to participate in a yoga class tomorrow evening. It's from 6:30-7... and if we like it we're going to go every tuesday.

How good is yoga? I've never tried it before.

Yoga is wonderful, but it is just stretching so understand it will not bring about any serious bout of energy burn and does not take place of resistance training.

That being said, nothing wrong with intense stretching.

Depends who you ask....

Some people love yoga to bits. I am one, though I am not very good yet. It is very relaxing and really helps with strengthening and firming muscles and stretching you out. I have a very advanced Yoga video and not only is the gorgeous instructor super fit, but to see those powerful yet still feminine muscles moving her body in ways I could never dream of is utterly amazing. Her butt is outstanding!!! Balance, stretching and strength are the key to success in yoga.

But on the other hand, some want a faster and more vigourous effort and therefore go for cardio or weight training to achieve their results. Personally I like both approaches. Yoga twice a week helps to stretch me out and really shows me what areas I am weak in. Yet I also enjoy Tae Bo and weight training on the other 4 days to get a powerful sweat going and give myself a great sense of tired satisfaction.

Give it a go and see what you think. At first it may seem a little simple and possibly not very effective, but as I said earlier, those who reach the more advanced workouts in Yoga can do things with their bodies I never dreamed a person could ever be strong, fit or flexible enough to do.

I dunno Leigh....

It has got to do something in the way of strengthening. That instructor I saw had the raw power and strength to move her body in ways I never thought imaginable. I suppose she could very well be doing resistance training outside of the yoga, but even at lower stages I find the limited yoga I am doing to be increasing my muscle strength in certain areas I wasn't able to get to with free weights.... Probably a good thing really.... ;)

Though you are absolute correct, resistance training is also important. For my money I will do both so I can be flexible and strong at the same time....

It depends on which kind of yoga we are speaking of as some are merely meditaive and involve very little actual movement. However, I assume we are speaking of the general yoga provided at most health clubs.

In this style of yoga you can increase isometric strength endurance yes, but no increase in maximal strength. For example...

One morning you decide to do a handstand and lower yourself. You hold the handstand for 2 secs and try to lower yourself but can't complete it without falling over. If every morning you did a handstand as long as you could over time yes you could do it longer and longer, but you would only increase endurance in that one position.

6 months later you can hold a handstand for 2 mins. You try to lower yourself but can't complete it and tumble over.

You have increased your isometric endurance and balance yes, but only in that position.

So I am not saying that it doesn't take skill, balance, or endurance to do yoga. I am just saying it isn't about strength and it shouldn't replace full movement resistance training.

Hi! Yoga is a wonderful way to rejuvenate. It doesn’t do much for weight loss but is great for toning up. Yoga also has a spiritual side to it & helps you connect & be in sync with your inner self. You are required to shut down your mind with all its petty worries. It is more than just doing the postures or “asanas.”
Chanting “om” sends good vibes through your body.
Yoga stresses a lot on breathing right. The breathing exercises or ”Pranayama” detoxifies your body. But it should all be done under the guidance of an expert yoga teacher or things could go awry.
I had yoga as a part of my curriculum when I was at school. Never appreciated it & played the fool! What a waste!
So have fun & contort away!

I remember thinking Yoga was for women.

Then, my friend who is a baseball player was forced to do it by the Head Coach.

I have a new found respect for it. His flexability has increased dramatically and he feels much better on a daily basis.

Weird but cool.

I want to try it out this summer

I participated in a yoga class today from 6:30-7:45. I feel great. It is called 'Vinyasa Yoga'. My stomach is already starting to feel nice. I'm very tiny if I do say so myself so yoga should be good for me because I'm looking to mainly tone my body.
My friend and I were the only younger people in the class. Most of the people were in their late 50's - early 60's. We've decided that we'll more than likely participate in the class every Tuesday.
How does that sound?

The practice of yoga is designed to unite mind, body, and spirit, and is based on the yogic premise that the mind and body are one, and that by the correct practice of yoga it is possible for the body to reach a place of harmony and heal itself.

Yoga has increased in popularity in recent years, with an estimated 6 million Americans currently engaging in regular yoga workouts. Part of yoga's popularity is simply that it provides so many health benefits. Yoga assists a person in becoming more aware of their body: their posture, their alignment, and the way they move. Yoga helps people become more relaxed and centered, less prone to stress, more energetic, happier, healthier, and more peaceful.

Thanks.

Yoga is a form of exercise, meditation, and restorative breathing. When practiced regularly, it brings unity to the mind, body and spirit.

I always thought Yoga is just a fancy form of stretching. I guess I'm mistaken. I'm starting to read up on it as well. I even subscribed to the Yoga Journal. I'm liking that Yoga also tackles the spiritual side of things, not just the physical.
