Worlds Greatest Person Dies

Some of you may not know of the lady but in my opinion she was the strongest person on this planet.
Jane Tomlinson was diagnosed with terminal cancer 7 years ago and given months to live. She didn't cry or feel sorry for herself though. While undergoing Chemotheraphy she ran the London marathon; she was the first to ever do this. She was interviewed after the event and she said her motivation was to give her kids something to be proud of their mother about after she died.

That wasn't enough though, she went on to do full ironman competitions (at age 42) and long distance bike rides to raise money for charity. She raised over £1.5m ($3m) all while undergoing chemotherapy and other cancer treatments

My throat hurts right now trying to contain how I feel while at work, you can read more about her and her death here

A tremendous loss. An inspiration to all. And, alot can be learned from this great woman. It makes our aches and pains in the gym and diet, petty and next to nothing in comparison; determination and heart is nearly unstoppable and can even postpone and delay death. What can be learned from this woman is priceless.

Great post CCR. I share your feelings.

I've finished todays workout so this post kind of carries over to my journal thread too but here's why Jane Tomlinson was and still is an inspiration to me;

1) And this is top by a long way - She didn't complain, she didn't make excuses, she just did it, if pity had entered her mind at any point I bet she wouldn't have been able to do what she did. Because of what this woman has done there can be no more excuses from anyone.
If you're thinking it's a bit cold outside to go on that run first thing in the morning then think of this woman, she cycled over 4,000 miles across America, stopping to have Chemotherapy along the way before hoping back in the saddle, there was no race to win, it was her against herself and she won! And all that after having 5-6 years of chemotherapy.
She wasn't even an athlete before she did this in her mid 40's

2) She did this not for any sense of self achievement or reward, she did this simply so that her children would remember her with pride. Her youngest was only a few years old when she was given months to live, to ensure he never forgot her she set about becoming great. The was no ego attached to what she did, she just wanted the people she loved to remember her with pride.
This is something I think any parent can relate to- the entire world is insignificant compared to the opinion of your child

3) She raised £1.75m for cancer charities and spread the word that 'the end doesn't start with the prognosis'. Her efforts spread further than she had ever imagined and she didn't duck the responsibility. After her body couldn't compete anymore she did everthing she could to stay involved with events.

4) Her goals never ended. This woman started by trying to complete a 10k run. Before long she became the first person on Chemo to run the marathon. Most people would stop there, but she didn't, she went on to do the half iron man and then the full ironman where a marathon is just the last of 3 phases, and then to cycle 4,200 miles across America.

Above all this woman is what I try and be every day, no excuses, no regrets. It's only you against the world and what you achieve is in your own hands
