Workout pain questions?

I heard that in order to gain muscle and strength, your arms need to be in pain after lifting weights. I just want to know, when they talk about "pain", to what extent do they define the word pain? Also, is it okay if my arms are in "mild pain" and they feel a bit numb? My arms feel that way for 1-2 hours before the mild pain goes away. Am I doing it properly?

your arms or any other body part shouldnt be in PAIN whoever told you that is a prick, you may ache after or the next day or you may not,its called DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness.)

Your muscles will probably be sore and ache a bit. But when people say pain, I take it to mean that you hurt yourself, like pulled/tore a muscle or dropped a dumbbell on your foot.

And, as I understand it, soreness is something that happens, especially when you're new to lifting, but isn't necessary for muscle growth.

Depends what you're doing. When I strength train i get no pain, when I'm building muscle there might be a bit, when I train for definition there is pain but this isn't because of injury, it's due to lactic acid build up in the muscles. "No pain no gain" isn't true, but if you want to reach anything like your potential then that means training intensely and at the time it doesn't always make you feel good. Afterwards it might, but not at the time!

whoever told him he needs to be in pain to grow is an idiot

Ah, okay! :)
