Workout advice.

Hey all,
I'm 18 in a month, 60kgs, 6ft 1.
Classed as underweight for my age, weight and height.
I'm enlisting to the army when i turn 18 and want to be fit by the time i go on training.
it gives me probably, around 5 months, maybe.
i want to bulk up a bit, but nothing ridiculous. Just so i have definition, my main goal is strength and fitness, not looks.
any suggestions?
Cheers,
Brendan.

good goals, find a good strength program to get you started.

Starting Strength: is very well known. Personally I prefer Ironaddict's Simple Power Based Routine since you don't squat 3x a week.

Good luck, remember to eat lots of good food!

Make sure you periodize your program. Start off with endurance training 2-4 weeks, then strength training 2-4 weeks and then power training 2-4 weeks.

For the endurance exercises, do each one for 1 minute. Example: squats, pushups, sit ups and arm hangs (hold pullups at top position)

Strength- choose a weight for all exercises that's challenging for 8-12 reps

Power- perform all exercises with close to perfect form as fast as possible with an implement that's 10% of your bodyweight or your bodyweight for plyo pushups, jump squats etc...

I'm sorry, but this guy has 5 months to get in shape. Right now he is classified as underweight and he is going to join the army. How will endurance training help for any of that? Starting Strength or SPBR will help him with strength and power, and they are well known routines made for beginners that last for a very long time. He should see constant improvement for the next 5 months on one SS or SPBR so long as he eats right (enough to gain strength and mass, but not too much to get too much fat on him).

Also I really wouldn't consider 8-12 rep routines as a strength training routine. And wtf, how low would the weights be if you were squatting for 1 minute straight?

Why don't you post the entry requirements for the army, give us more to work with? Last time I looked at the US Marines entry requirements a guy had to be able to do 3 whole pullups! OMG!

Thanks for the advice everyone :)
The diets hard to maintain, as i still live with my mum at the moment and she does the shopping.
i'm not training just to pass the army fitness requirements, i could pass them with my current fitness level,
I want to be as fit as possible for the actual army training, and all possible paths after that. other courses, commando, SAS.

by full body workout 3x a week, do you mean do gym 3 times a week and work your whole body each time.

Or 6 times a week and work half the body each time.

3x a week work the whole body.

Some Training programs:
Strong Lifts 5x5
Starting Strength
New Rules of Lifting

The first has it all.

Thanks, i'm going to give the strong lifts 5x5 a go for a few months and see how i progress.
Cheers,
Brendan.
