Ok so alot of you told me to add resistance training to maintain muscle when im losing weight. Bowflex has the Xtreme SE gym on sale for $423 shipping and tax included so I picked one up. Supposed to be in the mail next week... I am very excited!! What do you think? Will this help me maintain muscle and possibly build? I want to lose 100lbs by next summer or at least 75... my starting weight was 315 and im down to 281... I can and WILL do this!

Hey B.. great freakin' deal on that thing!

I would suggest the following (you may like/hate the idea haha):

I had my father in law (fil) call around, and pay a personal trainer about $50 bucks to come over and teach him how to use the bowflex as a circuit. It allowed my FIL to get about 3 full workout routines dialed in. He did these for almost a year before my wedding, and lost 30 pounds, gained a ton of muscle. My Mother in law things anything with chicken is healthy, so she fried chicken for him, made orange chicken with rice, etc... just awesome. He was 100% losing the weight from working out. The trainer got him a routine that allowed him to enjoy the workout, and still keep on it.

Very exciting for you man. Keep on keeping on!

1 pound of muscle burns 70 calories a day? Are you sure it's 70?

Agree with everything else you said Ben and would add that a few pounds of muscle look fantastic compared to a few lbs of fat.

Blah! Got a call from Bowflex they oversold when they clearanced them and are manufactuing more, kinda weird since they wont really be making a profit since it was $900 off and free shipping. Not shipping until week of December 20th :(

Muscle is actually about 6 calories a day. I'm not sure where the figures like 50-70 calories a pound come from... Here's my source - , which also links to a much more technical and difficult to read study ;)

Adipose (fat) - 2 calories per pound
Muscle - 6 calories per pound
Liver- 91 calories per pound
Brain - 109 calories per pound
Heart - 200 calories per pound
Kidneys - 200 calories per pound

"1 pound of muscle burns 70 calories a day? Are you sure it's 70?"
"I thought it was 1lb burns 30kcals a day. Is 70kcals a day correct? does anyone know?"

Though it will vary on a person to person basis, the rule of thumb is 1 lb. of fat burns 50 calories a day.

That doesnt sound right to me, but maybe I am being thick and I am certainly no expert - my body fat %age is about 35, and I weigh about 250lbs (to make the maths easy!) - that means I have about 87lbs of fat, which would burn, on that basis, just under 3,500 calories - throw in my muscle, and assuming the muscle burns twice as much as fat, then my BMR would be over 10,000/day! :drool5:

Sadly, Jeanette's numbers sound a lot more realistic!

I've read that it can be as high as 10 calories per pound of muscle, the added coming if you did some high intensity workout (Like intervals or strength training) that can lead to increase calories burned during the day. But yeah.. 70 - and even 50 - is sadly too good to be true. :/
