Will running too much make your legs fat?

Hi aLL

I hope this topic is in the right section.

I have cousins who used to be very much overweight. They then joined a gym and worked very hard to lose all of that weight.

Now one of them is very thin. But her legs are quite fat. She says it's because of all the intensive exercise that she has built muscular legs. I think possibly working too hard on the treadmill.

I don't think aerobics would have done this to her legs but the running has.

I told this to a gym instructor and she said there is no truth in it. She said that exercise only tones up the body, and perhaps the cousin would have been eating too much fatty foods.

I'm not convinced. (In addition to this, I think as a result of the intense exercise, the cousin now has veins that stick out too much in her arms.)

Does anybody have information or any personal experiences of becoming undesirably muscular due to intense exercise? Does this really happen?

Sorry, but exercise of any form does not make you fat. Perhaps she did gain some muscle in her legs, but that's good. If she keeps at it and watches what she eats perhaps she will lose some fat and her legs will start to get thinner.

Running won't make you fat but it will build muscle and if you don't lose the fat that is ontop of the muscle your legs will look bigger. Proper diet along with continuing to exercise will take care of leaning someone out if they have fat to lose over their muscle.

hi, thanks for your responses Angelkae and RunLikePre.

if it's not fat then it's muscle. in which case i don't think cutting down on fat intake will get rid of it.
anyone know u can get rid of muscles?

i know starving first gets rid of fat and then muscle, but of course isn't a option if u want to manitain good health.

again your legs will appear bulky because you have fat over muscle. It takes alot of muscle, ALOT of muscle to achieve bulky legs. So just start a clean diet and loose the fat.

Take into consideration her body type as well. If she is built much smaller on top than on bottom very little she can to will change that. I for one am pear shaped. I'm working on balancing my body out as much as possible, but my legs will always be more sturdy looking than my upper body. Also, while I gain muscle quickly, yet put my weight on in my legs first, they are the last part of my body to look skinny.

I was once overweight and ran it off, but now I have huge legs. Now when I lift weights, I can do far more weight in my lower body exercises than in my upper body. I personally think that my leg muscles developed when I was heavier, from having to haul around a heavier body. I mean, why not? I exercised every time I walked and I ate enough to build muscle.

I love what running has done to my legs.
