Will a lite weight lifting program affect my 11 year olds speed??

I’ve got a question…
I have an 11 year old boy who is very athletic.
He wrestles, plays soccer, plays baseball (probably his favorite sport) and plays basketball.
He is a gritty, very competitive 11 year old who loves sports.
Over the past 6 months, I have been working out. 40 minutes on the treadmill and getting back started with weight training.
He now wants to start lifting. But I have read in more than one place that weight training will actually make you a slower runner.
I am far from an expert.
Here is my question. Will doing light weight lifting affect his speed?
He is very fast. To give you an idea of his abilities, he is currently in the sixth grade and plays on the 8th grade team. What I don’t want him to do is start lifting and have his exercise program affect his speed.
Will lifting weights affect his speed?
Do you recommend any good training programs for him beside the usual stretching, jumping jacks, push ups and sit ups?

crossfit in not in the habit of making people slow

LOL! whats with the new avie Johny? you have to give explanation of that=- haha it looks fun.

Couchpotatoe
My son started lifting at 11, and he is on the cross country running team. Lifting will not make your kid slower, it will make him a better runner. Unless you let him get carried away and injur himself.

be careful with him, remember he is young and tender, and he THINKS he is invinsible- but too much weight, poor form, and macho-ism, can create an injury quite easily.

It’s a pic from one of my kid’s birthdays at Gymboree. We decided to have fun too. That’s me on the left, 2 seconds before I get knocked on my money maker by my brother-in-law.

I started lifting weights when I was 12 and did not experience any advese affects. My only regret is I didn't know what I was doing and didn't have a coach other than some books and magazines I stumbled on which may not have been the best resource. Just proves almost any exercise is better than none.

A proper resistance exercise program will only make your son stronger and faster! Like any other beginner he should start with a couple of sets of 12 reps of each exercise with a weight he can comfortably complete the 12th rep with without sacrificing form. For an 11 year old he should probably stick to 12 rep sets for a year or more, whereas a more mature person might be ready to change to lower reps and higher weights after 6-12 weeks.

Thanks for the tips all... :)
He loves wrestling and his wrestling practices utilize a lot of those very exercises in Johny Solo's link.
I think for now, I'll just let him start out with some VERY LIGHT lifting… a set of one of each of the exercises I am doing.
Both of us probably need to work on our form.
Is there any good weight lifting DVD’s out there that all of you recommend that show good lifting practices?
Thanks in advance...
