Why would they sell chocolate bars and potato chips at the gym

Maybe I am wrong and it is just normal to have those machines everywhere nowadays. I noticed they added one of those vending machines so when you walk into my gym the first thing you see is junk food. After all when im done an intense workout the first thing I want to do is go grab myself a Snickers chocolate bar. Cardio first, chocolate second thats just how I roll. Haha seriously though what are their intentions? Some people have problems with food and seeing that at the gym is only going to tempt them. Maybe they did it just as a test of willpower or they know they will make money from people who have problems with food.

AI'm sure their intention has to do with money, but that is just cruel... lol.

I would assume that it's something to do with making money, but who knows, maybe they are doing some sort of research project :)

I have wondered that many times. I go to a gym and they are pushing sodas and junk food, I guess its the same logic as going to the drive threw and ordering an extra large meal and a diet coke.

To keep you fat so you have to keep your gym membership, obviously! ;)

Most likely it's either a source of revenue or they were getting requests from members. It would be nice if they stocked it with low calorie / low sugar granola bars and water, but I'm sure there are people who would complain about that also. Do what I do, just don't bring any money with you. That way you can't buy a candy bar, even if you want one.

Here normally I have seen selling sprouts in gym.New to listen. It is only to make money only. One should be hard to tempt and feel it is test for them.

The gym I used to attend, back when I hit my goal weight, did that. It was a daily (okay, 6 days a week because I took Sundays off) goal of mine to be able to walk by the machine and not buy anything. It was really difficult. I don't go there anymore due to increased gym rates (25% increase? I don't think so, especially considering they cut back on how many machines they had and closed the pool). The place I will go with a pool in future (hopefully next month) has a fruit corner and a watering hole for sports drinks and water. Much better.

I got to a centre which also has a pool and a library in there. When you come in, first thing you have to get past is the cafe. It smells of fresh coffee and sweet foods all the time, and if it's not that, it's pizza and similar things later in the day. You have to go past it, almost through it, to get to the gym, and also on the way out. And if the idiots leave the door open, the smell of the food is actually in the gym the entire time I'm there. :/

I have made it a point to walk past there on the way out and look at all the people, pick the biggest I can find (and there's some hefty people sitting around there at all times, weirdly enough), and think to myself "That could be me, sitting there stuffing my face and shortening my life by a dozen years. I never want to be that person again!' And then I go home, and eat my salad.

That's a great way to look at it.
I'm going to adopt your attitude when I walk past yummy tempting smelling places.

It's not easy, mind you. But it really helps to look at why we're working on losing weight, all the good stuff that comes from it. It might be a struggle, but in the end, it's worth it! :)

It never is easy. But turning something like this into a motivational point of view rather than feeling deprived point of view is awesome.

I have to admit, it took me a long time to adopt that way of looking at it. I am usually somebody who is quite negative about a lot of things, but I noticed that it's not really getting me anywhere, and life's difficult enough without making it even more miserable for myself. So now I'm trying to find something good/motivational/funny about most situations....doesn't always work, but it does make a difference.

Positive thinking always makes a difference.
I always try and turn things into positives when I can, sometimes your mind just blocks on how to turn it around.
It definitely makes a difference in how you look at and enjoy life.
I would rather have a smile on my face any day than a sad face.

It's a love and hate situation. Ultimately love because you start building a tolerance to simply ignore it. Almost like emotional exercise right before the physical.

Gyms are business too. Your money talks. If you are silent about it, nothing will happen. Complain. Find another gym. or both. Some once wrote.... Fast Food businesses are not your friends... they just want your money They don't care if you're healthy or not. I think the same thing can be (sadly) said of many businesses. They just don't really care. Especially corporate gyms. Managers (in general) are paid to make money for the company and not much else.

You beat me to it. I have a friend who works at a gym and he said his gym bought them so you would eat one and keep on some weight, therefore keeping your membership and money.

Haha. I drive past a bakery (production, not store bakery) morning and it smells soooo good!! Sometimes I wish I could just go inside and ask for some lol.

It does seem strange, and I know from experience that it is not easy it being there so openly, but at the end of the day, it is up to us to resist junk food, not the anyone else. These things are around us all the time, even if not at the gym. In the long run, the aim is to be able to see the junk food, know that it is available to you, and to resist. To say no. The aim isn't to chuck junk food out of the world.
