Weight-Loss Why Is This Happening?

Hello all! I have a questions about the diet I've been on, and what's happening, because it seems to be backfiring. :(

First, a little history. I am currently 50lbs overweight. I'm 6' tall and I weigh about 195lbs. My ideal weight is about 145-150lbs. I have had a long love affair with food (it has lasted 3 years!), and I'm ready to move on. What triggered this change of heart? A painful knee injury. During a recent follow up, I asked my doctor if my weight would negatively affect my recovery. Her answer = YES! QUITE POSSIBLY! I knew right then and there that is was time to start doing something, and start sticking with it!

I went on a diet immediately. I didn't ask for tips or research too much at first, and for the first two weeks, I ate about 800-900 calories a day, and of course foods that were low in fat. I was amazed when I lost 12lbs in just two weeks time. My confidence was high at that point, and I decided to join a weight loss related website. There I learned that I was eating way too little! I should've been eating a minimum of 1300 calories a day. So I increased my food intake, and have stuck with foods that are low in fat, high in protein, and began eating lots of fruits and veggies. But I haven't lost a single pound since I increased my calorie intake, which was 9 days ago. In fact, between Wednesday and today (Friday) I've GAINED almost 2 lbs!

How could this be? Each day I take in 1250-1350 calories, and 10-20 grams of fat. Is this because I can't exercise (my doctor said no way until the end of March, and only after a check up then)? But shouldn't I still be losing and not gaining if I burn 2400 calories a day? Almost twice what I eat? Or do I for some reason have to eat fewer calories like I was doing to lose weight? From what I understand, that's very unhealthy, and not something I want to do if I'll be harming myself!

Any ideas and opinions? Thanks!!

I feel the same way you do. It seem like I'm doing everything right but nothing is working.

Assuming your statements about calories are true, your statements about weight gain and loss are false, at least in any meaningful sense.

If you consume 800 calories a day, and burn 2,400 calories a day, that leaves you with a 1,600 calorie per day deficit. It takes a 3,500 calorie deficit to lose a pound of fat. In two weeks, you've created a 22,400 calorie deficit, so have lost 6.4 pounds of fat.

So where did that extra 5.6 pounds of loss come from? Water, for the most part. Probably some change in the amount of food "in transit" through your system.

Now we go forward another 9 days, during which you've been creating a 900-calorie-per-day deficit, for a total of 8,100 calories, or 2.3 pounds. Total loss for the first two weeks plus the second 9 days is 8.7 pounds. The scale says you're down a net 10 pounds. So you've still got 1.3 pounds of loss to "earn" just to get down to the number on the scale this morning - and at 900 calories a day, it'll take about 5 days to get there.

Give your body a week or two. The number on the scale will start moving again.

I don't get it either.. I've recored everything to the T, every calorie and ever lb. I don't know much about water weight, but my mother said the same thing.. that the first big chunk of weight that you lose is all water. I also found a couple articles that talk about what happens when you eat so little (800 cals a day or less) and it mentioned that weight gain (up to 5-8lbs) is normal once you start eating a healthier amount of food, because the body was starved before and wants to hold onto the extra calories in case it happens again. Makes sense kind of.. Could that be what's happening? If so, the articles say that I SHOULD start losing again after eating healthy for 7-14 days. So I'm almost back to that point, if that's what has happened. I'm happy about that!

been there ,
the blowing up following a healthy meal after a lil kcal diet .
also the blowing up following stoppage of workouts .
frankly , since now u stopped ur workouts for a medical reason + raised ur kcal to a healthier one i think u are expected to gain those 2lbs .

from my point of view , u shud at least try to limit the late meals , cuz from my life attempts after 60 lbs loss i can tell u that breakfast gets totally burned and also early lunch , so if u could try to focus on liquid dinners rather than even fruits and veg. cuz they require digestion too .
i mean : try to limit the number of meals , and make them as early as possible b4 sleeping .
200 kcal at morning differs from a 200 kcal b4 sleeping or even at 6 pm.

try this and am sure it will give u a gr8 hand .
and if u lost 12 lbs , 2 lbs are nothing infront of them , u can lose them again .

Xero ...:)

You got to eat fat to lose fat. 20% - 30% of your total calories should come from fats split equally at 1/3 saturated, 1/3 polyunsaturated and 1/3 monounsaturated. Also, I don't know your age and I am assuming you are a male and even sedentary I think your calories are too low. I think you should be at about 1700 - 1900 calories. Based on you starting out at a low 800 and moving up, but still very low, your metabolism prolly has slowed way down. Just my 2 cents.....Best of luck to ya.

Hi!

I am on the same diet as you and for me it is working.
The WORST thing you can do is to weight yourself every day.... I did that in it drove me crazy!! I could loose about 10 lbs the first 2 weeks and NOTHING the other 2 weeks!.....
But I promise you that it will work if you keep it up!... Do not weight youreslf more than once every two weeks or even once a month.....if you keep on loosing 12 lbs a month that is a great process!

GOOD LUCK!
