WHY did i ignore this!

I don't think i've hit a plateu yet, but this sounds really interesting.. i think im gonna give it a try this week... see what kind of loss it produces haha

my personal trainer recently read the same article :D it's kinda fun to do it actually -takes a lot of the boredom out of it.

the sidebar about holding onto the hand rails was also interesting - that's a habit i'm trying to break myself of... (at 3.5mph i don't have to hold on at 3.9 I get don't feel as balanced... )

Interesting article - good share :D

Ive been on a plateau for quite a while and i never got round to finding out what HIIT is.
I had no idea they say its so good to break thru plateaus, i read this article if anyone else is intrested. It is for people who use/have a treadmill though:

Going to give it a go later on today.

yeah this works!!! If you really want to do it right get a Map test done on your heart, they are 100 bucks but they will tell you exactly how you need to work out according to your HB. everyone is different. its really cool!! It makes me excited to do my hour on the treadmill, where as before I HATED IT, now i have something to go by and follow.

An HOUR doing HIIT? Isnt that a bit much?

I dont know how long to do it. I get tired after 8 minutes running at 10MPH for 1 minute and walking at 3.5MPH for 2 minutes.
I'm going to try running 10mph for 30 seconds and walking at 3.5-4mph for a minute.

The treadmill is a couple of metres away from where i am now lol.

i think it was Steve (as one of the resident experts) who said that HIIT should be done for 15 minutes - Interval training, could be done longer.

15 minutes, 20 at the most. If you can go past this, you aren't doing it properly. My HIIT sessions, the actual work portion of it, last 12-15 on average.

Oh, and I am no expert. Nor am I professional. :p

So basically by the end of the session you should be spent and not able to continue on?

Yeah but you're.....

OK, I have to admin I'm confused about the difference between "interval" and "HIIT".

Here's a typical cardio workout for me. My max HR is 168 (58 yrs. old).

3 min. at 115 bpm.
3 min. at 125 bpm.
10 1 min. sprints at 150-155 bpm, each 1 followed by 1 min. of recovery at 135-140 bpm.
2 min. at 115 bpm - recovery
1 min. at 135 bpm.
1 min. at 150-158 bpm.
1 min. recovery
repeat above 3 steps.
1 min. at 120 bpm.
2 min. at 135 bpm.
4 sprints at 145-155 bpm, 1 min. long, each followed by 30 sec. recovery
2 min. at 135 bpm.
2 min. at 145 bpm
1 min at 155-160 bpm.
5 min. recovery

I've been able to push my HR all the way up to 161, but that's the best I can do. My HR is between 145 and 160 bpm (86% to 96% of max) for around 24 minutes of the the hour long workout.

How is that not "high intensity interval training"? I don't want to misuse a term, but I honestly don't see the difference.

Exactly. You are supposed to go at your maximum speed (and incline if on a treadmill) for a portion of time, and then do basic cardio for double the time you did the HIIT.

HIIT is doing the thing you are doing at the peak of your ability, without hurting yourself anyway. No one can sprint at 10-15 mph for an hour.

I tend to cover a lot more distance by doing HIIT with 30 seconds running at 10mph and 1 minute walking at 3.5-4.0mph, than i do with a combination of walking at 4.5mph and jogging at 7-8mph. (low intensity cardio)

I recently started doing a HIIT routine and asked advice from the Harsh Truth Section here.

I am unable to go as fast as you and even for as long a period of time as you, but I am keeping track of my progress via my diary. If I am able to run for longer periods of time or less cool down time etc, to help me see when it is time to increase speed or add incline or decrease cool down. There is some really good info in the link above.

I was only able to do the HIIT routine 5 times. That is 5 sprints, 5 cool downs after warm up and additional cool down time.
