Sport Why bulk???

Sport Fitness
Why should you bulk up? If you add say 500 calories above your matience calorie intake wouldn't you just be adding fat? WHy wouldn't you just take as many calories as you need and get your recommended amount of protein and then only be adding muscle?

because its not JUST about protein. the body needs X amount of calories to maintain its current weight.

as soon as you start tearing down muscle, you need to repair it, and that takes calories.

If you add 500 calories when you don't need it, you gain fat.

If you don't add any calories and just up your protein, you can add muscle, but its slow...painfully slow. instead fo a couple pounds of muscle a month, you're looking at several months to gain a pound of muscle.

if getting results in a reasonable, non-frustrating amount of time is important, you should go with bulking and cutting cycles to optimize results.

the short answer is that you need excess calories to build muscle once you've broken them down through exercise. Think of calories as fuel...when you do cardio to lose weight, if you don't have enough fuel then your body will turn to your fat reserves to convert into energy, hence burning fat. If you want to build bigger stronger muscles, then you don't want to be using energy from your body to try and repair them, you want extra "fuel" from food.

Somebody else will be able to give you a scientific answer.

alright I get the idea now. Thanks for the help:D I think I'll just finish the stuff off and then probably just buy protein powder.

On a related note, is there any kind of a generalisation as to how many extra calories go specifically to muscle and fat?
